22 PHILANTHROPY Akorn works with Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy (AKP), helping nature to thrive and cultures to flourish by positively impacting lives and livelihoods in the communities where Akorn guests travel. Through dedicated strategic investments in education, conservation, health care, and enterprise, we inspire our guests and staff to actively support our philanthropic endeavors. We believe passionately that sustainable tourism offers the best hope of protecting endangered places and ensuring local communities continue to benefit from their natural heritage. By creating jobs, providing educational opportunities and introducing our guests to our projects, we alleviate poverty, foster environmental stewardship and preserve cultures. We are proud to share with our guests, extending the opportunity to get involved with the projects on all seven continents. We invite guests to visit the sites to observe our work first-hand and directly assist local peoples to sustain their cultures and environments. To learn more about AKP and the projects we support, visit OUR PROJECTS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA: Cambodia Clean Water Project CAMBODIA In rural Siem Reap Province, home of the remarkable and historical Angkor Archaeological Complex, guests are encouraged to visit one of the nearby villages to witness the work of the Cambodia Clean Water Project. Together with guest support, the Cambodia Clean Water Project has provided access to clean water for more than 17,000 villagers in the region. During their journey, guests spend time at the home of a clean water well recipient and learn first-hand the benefits of this life-saving project. Chiang Mai Mushroom Farm THAILAND Located along the route between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, the Chiang Mai Mushroom Farm project is a partnership between AKP and a community home that provides natal care and job-skills training to single mothers and pregnant women. The project is working to create a life of independence and self-sufficiency for its residents. With AKP s support, a mushroom house was constructed so the women are able to grow mushrooms as a source of income and food security, while also learning project management and financial planning skills. Akorn guests are invited to meet with the residents of the home, learn about mushroom farming, and gain an insight into daily life in these rural surroundings. Sin Kyun Village MYANMAR Among the many attractions of Mandalay, cruising along the magnificent Irrawaddy River is, perhaps, a favorite for many guests. For an even more rewarding excursion, Akorn recommends a visit to the remote village of Sin Kyun, situated on an island, not far from Mandalay. At the request of the village chief, AKP has partnered with the community to improve education in the village and together with guests, has funded the construction of the village middle school and teachers living quarters. Guests can meander village pathways to see the new school and engage in daily life in the village and learn about their local traditions, which include peanut farming and hat-making
