There are so many programs that are personally inspiring, and I kept checking my calendar to see how many I might be able to take. There is such a display of wisdom, engagement and depth, and over and over I was given the opportunity to experience the sense of gratitude for our land and the amazing role it plays in so many peoples lives presenters, retreat participants and staff. Recognizing the need in our world for the wisdom held and shared in our offerings, we have established new policies designed to help more people come home to themselves and to the natural beauty of our shared land. In addition to the 15% coupon offered in this catalog for our winter and spring programming, we have expanded our generosity policy to include all of our programs. We also want Shambhala Mountain Center to be a place where you can simply come for a weekend to practice, wander the land and visit the Stupa at your own pace and are offering 25% off of our lodging prices in a new Getaway option. 11 February SHAMBHALA Learn to Meditate Many of us are slaves to our minds. We try to focus, and our mind wanders off. We try to keep stress at bay, but anxiety keeps us awake at night. We try to be good to the people we love, but then we forget them and put ourselves first. And when we want to change our life, we dive into spiritual practice and expect quick results, only to lose focus after the honeymoon has worn off. We return to our state of bewilderment. We re left feeling helpless and discouraged. It seems we all agree that training the body through exercise, diet, and relaxation is a good idea, but why don t we think about training our minds? Meditation practice allows us to find peace within ourselves while developing a strong, flexible mind. Our Learn to Meditate retreats offer accessible meditation practice techniques as well as a perspective on how they work. We will draw from Turning the Mind Into an Ally, the best-selling book by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche as we explore this question together in a contemplative environment. You will receive a copy of this book at the retreat. Tuition $ nights February PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION Introduction to Mindfulness- Based Stress Reduction Shastri Janet Solyntjes Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a practical, scientifically supported program designed to reduce stress, facilitate relaxation, and promote physical health and emotional well-being. 21 April SHAMBHALA Learn to Meditate Patricia Kelly Many of us are slaves to our minds. Tuition $ nights Patricia Kelly has been practicing meditation since Her connection to practice brought her from Maine to Naropa University and the Contemplative Psychotherapy program. After graduating in 1989 she remained in Boulder, raising her son and working in community mental health with families and children. She maintains a private psychotherapy practice in Louisville, Colorado. She continues her meditation training as a student of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche and is an active member of the Shambhala Community. April PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION Confusion Arising as Wisdom Ringu Tulku Rinpoche In this special weekend, Ringu Tulku will teach on his new book, Confusion Arises as Wisdom, a commentary on Gampopa s Great Teachings to the Assembly. How could confusion arise as wisdom? According to the Mahamudra view, confusion arises as wisdom when we realize that everything we experience is the radiance of the mind s own nature. What is the nature of our mind? How do we come to recognize that? Gampopa shows his students and now us the path of deep understanding and meditation that leads to the realization of Mahamudra, the Great Seal of the true nature of reality. Tuition $ nights Ringu Tulku Rinpoche was born in east Tibet and fled to India in He studied with many outstanding masters, including Dilgo Khyentsé Rinpoche and the Gyalwang Karmapa, and was awarded the titles of Khenpo and Lopön Chenpo. 23 April CONTEMPLATIVE ARTS Brush Spirit: The Expressive Art of Calligraphy Barbara Bash The practice of calligraphy, the beautiful writing of the world, brings us into alignment with ourselves so that true expression can occur. In this workshop we will begin with the ancient Chinese straight line practice for grounding and stabilizing, then move to larger brushes, bigger paper and free form strokes based on the principles of heaven, earth and human. Bringing what is inside out onto the page opens creative pathways and nourishes the present moment. An interest in visual language grounded in the body is the only prerequisite. Tuition $ nights (includes materials) Barbara Bash is a longtime Shambhala artist, working with the practices of calligraphy, writing, drawing and Big Brush performance painting. She studied Dharma Art with Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Chinese pictograms with Ed Young. She has written and illustrated a number of books, most recently True Nature: An Illustrated Journal of Four Seasons in Solitude. April BODY AWARENESS Free Your Energy Jeanie Manchester & Billy Goldman In this retreat we will refine and deepen our understanding of the practice by utilizing the breath, the steadying of the gaze, and proper body alignment. The practice will serve as a place to listen and become more aware of our superficial mind and our habitual patterns. As these habitual patterns arise within the container of the practice there is the opportunity to see them for what they are-concepts/ ideas. As one is successful in this endeavor the energy that was previously deployed in identifying with these ideas is released which results in greater freedom and energy. Not only do we experience greater joy but we begin to respond, versus reacting, to our challenges. Through daily asana, pranayama, meditation and contemplation we will come to understand better how we can free up the vital life force that is essential for living a vibrant and healthy life. Tuition $ nights Jeanie Manchester, ERYT 500, Director of Anjaneya Yoga Shala in Boulder, Colorado has been studying modern dance and yoga for the past 30 years and offers yoga immersions, trainings and retreats. May 31 June 2 WISDOM TRADITIONS Awakening the Luminous Mind Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche At the core of the dzogchen teachings is the view that all sentient beings are primordially pure and perfect, and have the potential to spontaneously manifest in a beneficial way. This capacity is within each of us, yet we often find ourselves alienated and disconnected as we rush about in our day-to-day lives. If we are willing to directly and nakedly encounter the experiences of our ordinary life, these experiences become the doorway to the realization of our nature, the inner refuge. Pain can become the path home. Join Rinpoche as we engage in meditation and reflection to honor the three doors of body, speech, and mind, and to discover the gifts of spaciousness, awareness and warmth that bring healing and benefit to ourselves, our relationships and the greater world. Tuition $ nights Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche is the founding director of Ligmincha Institute. In his more than 20 years of living and teaching in the West, Rinpoche has become renowned for his ability to convey the ancient wisdom of Bön Buddhism in a way that is highly relevant to Western students.
