4 50th UHSSWA Conference Held in Honolulu On April 18th and 19th, thirteen Daifukuji members attended the 50th annual United Hawaii Soto Shu Women s Association conference on Oahu. Hosted by the Soto Mission of Hawaii Betsuin Fujinkai, this well-organized event brought together Fujinkai members & friends from the nine Soto Zen temples in Hawaii for a weekend of Dharma fellowship. A big mahalo to Bishop and Mrs. Shugen Komagata, Rev. and Mrs. Ryokei Ishii, Rev. and Mrs. Kokei Yoshida & the members & volunteers of the Soto Mission of Hawaii. Next year s 51st Anniversary UHSSWA Conference will be hosted by Molokai Guzeiji on April 23 & 24, 2016 in Las Vegas! by Jien McLaughlin I felt very grateful that I was allowed to go the UHSSWA Conference in Honolulu. This was my first time traveling to Honolulu and going to the Conference. And even though I was a newcomer I felt very welcomed by all members. We enjoyed bountiful food and it was prepared with such care. At the Soto Mission of Hawaii in Honolulu we were greeted by the members. They cheerfully carried our suitcases and had prepared an absolutely wonderful breakfast. There was so much care and thought that was put into every detail of this conference. I especially enjoyed the talks. There was an emphasis on welcoming everyone into the temples. Rev. Jiko stated that we must look for the talents in others and allow them to use their talents. I thought that was very wise of her. But the thing that impressed me the most was how kind and welcoming each and every person was toward me. Even though I am a bit shy in large groups, everyone reached out and welcomed me in his or her own kind way. That touched my heart and I realized how very fortunate I am to belong to such a wonderful sangha. by Tina Cintron This past April I attended my very first UHSSWA Conference, held on Oahu. Not knowing what to expect I listened and observed as our Daifukuji members prepared. I watched bags of huge avocados sorted out into boxes, along with all kinds of our Big Island treasures packed up for the Country Store. Posters of price lists were made. The boxes were counted many times. The excitement grew as details of pompoms for luggage, name tags, & instructions were given, and our song was rehearsed one last time as Reiko and Nancy practiced their hula to our singing. Oh boy! (Continued on page 5) 4
5 50th UHSSWA Conference Held in Honolulu Continued Traveling together at the crack of dawn, making sure no one was missing or left behind, waiting together, yawning and having tummies rumbling made for a special camaraderie. We made our flight with ease. Our bus being somewhere other than where we were helped increase our joy at finally arriving at the main temple. I watched smiles and hugs and laughter among friends from all the different groups as we converged in the main hall. The continental breakfast turned out to be a morning feast, gleefully consumed. We moved on to the morning service, our sleepy heads trying to stay attentive. Silk screened bags with information, snacks and water were handed to all. The business of the organization and officers took place. Then the ordeal of photos was handled. There were a lot of people to herd about. The special donation drive- the Country Store- was a riot. Our Big Island goodies disappeared in seven minutes! These folks are serious shoppers. Hawaii and food, food and Hawaii, Buddha's blessings, friendship, kindness and laughter. But there was much more to this conference than just a good time off island. What I had been waiting for took place the next day. The Dharma Session had our Rev. Jiko, Rev.Shuji, and Dr. Jay Sakashita, PhD. giving excellent talks on the subject of applying Buddhist teachings into our everyday lives. We received practical advice (practical applications for everyday kindness; mindfulness, not just for us to do for others, but to also help ourselves be better to ourselves). Also discussed and explained was the importance of daily meditation and how it benefits the practitioner. Lots of humor. Lots of history. I wished there had been more time for what I personally felt was the crux of the conference. The conference was entitled Legacy - Perpetuating the Spirit of What Women Can Do. The Dharma talk reinforced this theme, as did all the speeches over the two days. We were reminded of strength under adversity during the first wave of Japanese immigrants that established the coffee farms, the stingingly painful memories of WWII and its terrible consequences on the community, of internment camps, and how the Sangha women rose to stabilize their communities during this tumultuous time. Gratefully life moved on, improved, changed for the better, and now we have the first American and female temple leader at Daifukuji in our very own Reverend Jiko Nakade. I must say this is a result of the true legacy laid down by the women who came before her, their life stories spoken of by their daughters, many of whom are now grandmothers, active, noble women set to continue the stabilization and progress of our Sangha communities statewide, so that we can echo this good strength and healing power to the rest of the world. It was a great conference. 5
6 Soto Zen Buddhist Confirmation Ceremony Held at Daifukuji Congratulations to (left to right) Kaleopono Kōdō Norris, Patricia Kōshin Missler, Robert Kakuzan Kobzi, Kindness Isshin Israel, Hannah Hōran Israel, and Sharen Seiren Bangay One of the most moving and joyful ceremonies held at our temple is the Soto Zen Buddhist Lay Confirmation Ceremony. At this year s ceremony, which was held on May 23 and officiated by Rev. Jiko, a group of six temple members received the precepts in the presence of family members and friends. Formally becoming disciples of the Buddha, these members were presented with their Buddhist names, wagesa, and certificates. Our Sangha warmly congratulates: Sharen Bangay -- Seiren (Lotus of Purity) Hannah Israel -- Hōran (Orchid of the Dharma) Kindness Israel -- Isshin (One Heart-Mind) Robert Kobzi -- Kakuzan (Mountain of Awakening) Patricia Missler -- Kōshin (Forest Light) Kaleopono Norris -- Kōdō (Noble Path) This confirmation ceremony was the culmination of a period of study and reflection on the sixteen bodhisattva precepts which form the ethical basis in the life of a Soto Zen Buddhist. Rev. Jiko plans to offer this study of the precepts and confirmation ceremony annually. Once again, congratulations to Seiren, Hōran, Isshin, Kakuzan, Kōshin, and Kōdō! 6
7 Book Review by Barbara Shōshin Bosz Design with Japanese Obi by Diane Wiltshire and Ann Wiltshire in a beautiful book full of photographs displaying obi in a variety of ways. Includes a short history of how the obi has developed over time and the different kinds of obi. A feast for the eyes. Old Tables for Giveaway Call Rev. Jiko at if interested. Obon Greetings from Rev. Jiko Aloha Daifukuji members and friends, The season of honoring one s ancestors is here and I am busy writing the o- toba memorial dedications which many of you have requested. Seeing me surrounded by stacks of toba boards, a temple member remarked, Could you not delegate this work to someone who does calligraphy? Perhaps noticing the look of surprise on my face, he quickly added, This is your duty, isn t it? Each year, writing the toba memorial dedications is my duty as a minister. It is also an honor and an opportunity. It is an honor for me to write the names of your deceased loved ones and family ancestors. & to chant the sutras in their memory. It is also an opportunity for me to think about you and to pray for the well being of your family. Time and time again, what becomes clear to me is how very much intertwined our lives are. As a Sangha, we share moments of happiness and moments of sadness, always trying to support one another. To pay our respects to our fathers and mothers and family ancestors is to remember who we are and from where we have come. To remember is to connect; to connect is to see our deep roots into the past. In so doing, we are strengthened. We are humbled. We are inspired to appreciate the goodness that s been passed on to us and to transform the suffering that has come through our families. A temple member who cleaned the columbarium on general clean-up day noticed the many small urns of those who died in childhood. There was a time when almost every family lost one or more children to childhood diseases. At our recent Jizo service, we dedicated the merit of the chanting to the children, who Jizo-sama draws to his side and wraps in sleeves of sheer compassion. Obon is a time of joyful remembrance. I hope to see you at Daifukuji s Obon Service and Bon Dance. Mahalo to Winifred Sensei for leading the Bon Dance practice sessions. May we have good weather the night of our Bon Dance this year! Thank you for your support of Daifukuji Soto Mission. Taking refuge in Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. In Gassho, Rev. Jiko 7
