1 Member s Weekly Edition 9 8 September, 2010 INTER-GROUP 8 MEETING Selamat Hari Raya & Maaf Zahir Batin Highlights: Intergroup 8 1 President s Message 2 Calendar 3 Pics of the Week 4 On the Spot! 5 The recent Inter-Group Meeting comprising of Rotary Clubs in Group 8 of District 3300 was successfully held on Wednesday 1st September at the Sri Damansara Club. Hosted by RCDW, the event saw the participation of almost 80 Rotarians and guests from our district. In attendance amongst others included all Presidents from Group 8, AG Dato Jimmy Lim, representatives from CIMB Bank, the World Wide Fund (WWF) and Malaysian Glaucoma Society. Why does Rotary encourage group meetings? Apart from the fellowship that comes every time Rotarians get together, it is also an opportunity for Rotarians and guests to appreciate and understand the many activities and programs that other rotary clubs are undertaking. The evening started off with the breaking of fast for Muslims followed by the Maghrib prayers. The formal part of the Inter-Group Meeting began immediately after dinner with the reading out of club announcements by the respective Group 8 Presidents. AG Jimmy Lim spoke briefly about his satisfaction on the programs and activities carried out by clubs under Group 8 before President Rassa closed the meeting by thanking everyone for their participation and attendance. The highlight of the evening was a talk by from WWF on Save our Seafood and a video presentation that had to be cut short abruptly due to some technical glitches. In all, I believe everyone had a pleasant evening and went home with fond memories. Kassim Ariff
2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dear RCDW ers We had some challenges (to say the least ) on our first Inter-Group 8 Meeting! On the seating arrangements, some worries over the food and overflowing of guests. But really, it was a good challenge to have in hosting! All part of the learning curve! It was great to see members from different clubs meeting and learning from each other. Passions were also flying high when we found out that tiger prawns, ikan pari and ikan bawal hitam were amongst the danger list and we should curb our appetites on them! WWF certainly brought everyone s attention to it. Imagine Malaysian s consume about kg per capita per annum of seafood! Wow! The Handsome Guys Day at the Help in Reading part III was also a success especially when I brought in the new stock of storybooks. Its just wonderful to see children getting excited over books,.. we are so into our internet savvy life but nothing and really nothing beats good old fashion books. OC Aileen has set her dates for the reading competition and prize day so the kids are getting ready for that! Zara, Ilyas and Taqif also joined in the fun and like I always say, its never too young to expose children to community service. We have Fireside this week jointly hosted by PP Kassim and I, at PP Kassim s residence. Not to forget the wonderful invitation by our Rtn Hannah for her Rumah Terbuka meeting on 22 September 2010.With our Hari Raya Festivities upon us this week, my mind is filled with ketupat, lemang, rending and kuah kacang! What a spread and so it s a good thing that Get Healthy! will be off its feet soon! So with that, Selamat Hari Raya Aidil Fitri and Maaf Zahir & Batin! To all Muslim Members, Fellow Rotarians and Friends! 3 MONTHLY EDITOR S NOTE Yup. Its me, Editor for the month of September. and what a struggle it has been to get my first issue of the COMPASS out! I have developed a new found respect and admiration for past editors of our weekly newsletter i.e., Farouk, Hannah and not forgetting Rassa whom has sat patiently beside me this last few hours supervising my editorial work whilst refraining herself from getting physical with me. It is after all, still the fasting month. This past week has been a pretty eventful week for RCDW as we successfully hosted the first Group Intercity Meeting at our regular venue as well as The Handsome Men participation at RCDW s Reading Program with the Mynmar Refugee Children in Kepong. All these and other news items have been reflected in this week s edition of the COMPASS. Thanks Hussein, for taking over the On The Spot column. You ve done me proud brother! Finally, enjoy the COMPASS, Selamat Hari Raya and have a great holiday folks! 5 ON THE SPOT The month of September will see Rtn.Hussein obligingly taking over the role as resident interviewer for this column in the absence of PP Kassim who in turn is the Compass Editor for the month. That s what brothers are there for! During the Reading Program for the Myanmar Children last Saturday, Hussein took the opportunity to put Rtn.Aileen Toh On The Spot with some very interesting line of questioning Q1 So, tell us what do you do for a living? I m a Software Project Manager with IBM. Basically, we develop software s for our clients. Q2 What s your horoscope? I m a Capricorn. Q3. And what is a typical Capricornian like? They are an ambitious lot, highly demanding & very critical. Really? But I now would like to be less critical and strongly believe that winning isn t everything. However, I did win a quiz in a recent company trip to Bangalore. Boy! That felt great! Q4. We all know you love to read & you re doing a wonderful thing with this Book Reading Program with the Myanmar kids. Thank you Hussein. That s really nice of you to say that. You know Hussein, compared to your brother, you re fairer & look more English than Kassim [Mei Ling who has been sitting beside Aillen during this interview, agreed. Yes la Hussein. You don t look as Malay as Kassim. You could also pass for someone from the mid east. Well thank you ladies. I ll take that as a compliment but I m not the one on the spot right now (blushingly). Now, back to you Aileen. Q5 So besides reading a book, what else can you do with a book??!? Uhhhhh.Well, I can use it to prop my camera & take pictures of myself when I m alone at home. Good answer. Q6 So what else do you do to release your tension? I go for regular therapy.shopping therapy that is. You see, you could say I m a bit of a shopaholic. Even with a 5 minutes break, I could still fit in a shopping spree. That s my way of releasing stress. Wow! Well, I can t help but ask you this next question. Q7 How many credit cards do you carry? Errrrrrr I have 6 but recently increased it to 7!!. Not that I needed another one but there was this contest & a chance to WIN a BMW.[Refer answer to Q3] OK..So Aileen, I take it you travel a fair bit right? Ya Q8 Tell us, which country did you enjoy the most & why? Italy was definitely top on my list because of its historical places. But nearer to home, I would say Cambodia was just as fun, specifically the Angkor region. Wonderful. Speaking of which, I m actually planning to go for a trip with my wife & was considering Cambodia. We re also considered Vietnam or South Korea. Errrr...Sorry Hussein, but isn t this interview about me? Sorry Aileen. Q9 So during these trips overseas, anything interesting happened that you would like to share with us? Well.maybe there was but I m not in the mood to share what happens behind closed doors, if you know what I mean. Oh really? Q10.So what gets you in the mood? Editors Note. Due to time and space constraint and general concern that the Interviewer s line of questioning may deem to be insensitive, inappropriate and down right offensive to some, content from the remaining interview was removed andneeded to be further censored and edited for your future reading pleasure. Watch this Space! Hussein Ariff Edition 9 - September 7, 2010 Page 5

7 NEW GENERATION MONTH Rotary has many youth programs. The programs for younger participants, such as Interact and Rotary Youth Exchange, are not funded by The Rotary Foundation, but they all give Rotary a very positive public image, which The Rotary Foundation benefits from. They are also very important to The Rotary Foundation, as the participants get their first contact with Rotary, which can lead to future membership in a Rotary club and, hopefully, becoming a contributor to The Rotary Foundation. The programs for older participants, such as Ambassadorial Scholarships, Group Study Exchange, and Rotary Peace Fellowships, are funded by The Rotary Foundation. Of special interest to me is the Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution a program that one day might become the jewel in the Rotary programs crown. We have a fundraising effort running for this program the USD95 million campaign which must not be forgotten in our ambition to increase contributions to the Annual Programs Fund and Permanent Fund and to meet Rotary s USD200 Million Challenge. All our youth programs are peace programs. In particular, our Youth Exchange participants act as ambassadors of peace when going to a totally new environment. We ask a lot from them, and we can be very proud of them. All our students younger or somewhat older, at home or abroad participate in local projects, thus Building Communities Bridging Continents through Service Above Self. When Handsome Men Read Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar Foundation Trustee Chair HELP IN READING iii True to their word, the self-proclaimed handsome men, Rtn Hussein and Secretary Kassim volunteered their precious time last Saturday (designated as Handsome Men day ) for RCDW s Reading Program with the Myanmarese refugee children. Little Zara had her own fun joining the group to listen to her daddy read short stories to the enthusiastic bunch of young children. At the other side of the room, Rtn Hussein and myself read to the older children the story of the Sleeping Beauty. While not all of them understood every word, we observed that all showed that they certainly knew the meaning of the word kiss when they displayed big smiles of comprehension to hear the sleeping princess being awakened by the kiss from her prince. (while Lovely Ladies coached..) The lively noises from yet another group of energetic children was evident of the fun they were having with Rtn Mei Ling while she coached them in reading. President Rassa and her two handsome young men later appearance added to the lively colours of the afternoon (although one of the handsome men apparently did not approve of her attire). Kudos must be given to the labour of love of the two boys who helped to carry two big bags of books up the 5 flight of stairs, especially when they were fasting. After a short biscuits break, all of us continued to coach the children personally to read as we prepared them for the reading competition next month. Service beyond boundaries, race, religion or creed that is what all these Rotarians have displayed by giving up some of their time on a Saturday afternoon to provide their service. To the rest of the members, we hope you can try to come and join us for any one or all of the next 3 sessions of the reading program. Rtn.Aileen Toh Edition 9 - September 7, 2010 Page 7
