A few words from the English Club 5A Alex Wu Did you all enjoy the English Gala? I hope you all did. Tons of activities were held and we hope that they enhanced the English-speaking environment in the school. The English Club organized the F.1 and F.2 Oral Games, as well as the LS Quiz for F.3 students together with the LS Club. In the last senior form assembly, we had a talk organized by Non-profit Making Veterinary Services Society and I personally enjoyed it very much as I got a chance to interact with those adorable cats and dogs closely! We held movie appreciation workshops during lunch periods as well. The incentive sticker scheme is one of the reasons I love English Gala so much. How many incentive stickers did you get? As the chairperson of the English Club, I attended all the activities held in the English Gala. Our schoolmates were all passionate in speaking English and they participated in the activities actively.

2 2 For the F.1 and F.2 Oral Games, my favorite game is Hot Seat. Some vocabulary items were shown on the cards while students provided hints to one of their teammates to guess, without letting him or her look at the card. The competitions were intense, and the students were so creative as they used their body and hand gestures and synonyms wisely. For the LS Quiz, the LS Club designed questions based on social issues and we implemented a game-based learning platform called Kahoot! to run the Q&A session. Each class had its own ipad to answer the questions and marks were awarded according to the accuracy and speed. We also held some movie appreciation workshops during lunch period, showing the movie Divergent and giving out some materials for discussion. I d like to thank our vice-chairperson Candy for her effort in preparing the whole activity. Lastly, I d like to invite all of you to join the English Club next year or even be part of the committee team. We will try our best to organize more and better activities to promote an English-speaking culture in LKKC. English Gala [Divergent Film Show] 5A Candy Cheung On April 27th and 28th, then on May 4th and 5th, the blockbuster film Divergent was shown in the English room for around half an hour per day. The film, which came out in 2014, starred Shailene Woodley as the female protagonist Beatrice Prior ('Tris') and Theo James as the male protagonist and love interest Tobias Eaton ('Four'). The story revolves around their struggle for survival when trying to uncover the truth in a dystopian society set in future Chicago, U.S.A. The two characters were 'Divergents' in a a world where everyone is in a faction, except the factionless. People in different factions (Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless and Erudite) believe in different virtues, but they were often blind-sighted, neglecting the importance of the values upheld by other factions. Divergents, who do not conform to a particular and thus narrow kind of thinking, often have a strong personality and are therefore seen as a threat to be eliminated.

3 3 Unsurprisingly, such an exciting tale was retold in a film bursting with dynamic scenes. As students watched the film, the room came alive with tension and energy. It was wonderful that students eagerly expressed their opinion on the film and story after viewing. We discussed fun questions regarding our probable faction of birth and of choice, and also delved into deeper topics, for example sharing our thoughts on whether it is right for a friend to be envious of another's success during a competition. Not only did we improve our English listening and speaking skills, we also discovered more about ourselves and each other, while gaining wider perspectives on moral issues. As the vice-chairperson of the English club this year, I would like to, on behalf of the club, use this opportunity to thank students for their active participation and insightful answers. I hope you will be there to join in on the fun English Gala [Talk on Animal Rights] 4D Albe Chik Do you like playing with animals? Have you ever considered keeping an adorable cat or an enthusiastic dog as your pet? If the answer is yes, keep reading as I share with you about the talk held in the last senior assembly about animal rights. The talk was organized by the founder of Non-profit Making Veterinary Services Society, Mr. Mark Mak. As one of the highlights of the English Gala, Mr. Mak had not only given us an entertaining and educational talk, he had also brought two little helpers with him, Colby and Happy. Colby is a lovely cat while Happy is a joyful dog who never stops wiggling his tail. Although Happy has only three legs, it doesn t stop him from being cheerful. We also got a chance to pat and play with them during the talk. I am sure this was an unforgettable talk for all of us! Apart from the talk being delightful, the message behind it was deep and serious. Abandoning pets is now becoming more and more common in Hong Kong. You can often see stray dogs and cats lying on the side of the road or searching for food in rubbish bins. They are emaciated and some of them are even on the edge of death. Why do they deserve such cruel treatment? They haven t done anything wrong except have a bad owner. Nowadays, many people keep pets without thinking twice. When they feel tired of their pets, they just abandon them on the street. Pets are loyal to their owner, but in the end, what they get is only betrayal.

4 4 Mr. Mak said, Don t consider cats and dogs as a pet. Consider them as a friend, a partner and a family member. Will you ever abandon your family member? Pets are not just a toy, they have their own thoughts and feelings. Don t treat them as a wild animal, treat them like human beings. If you want to keep a pet, take care and love them for their whole life. To you, pets may just be one of your accompany. But to your pet, you are their whole world. Movie Review Beauty and the Beast 4B Cherry Cheung 'For who would ever learn to love a beast?' - this line from the prologue is probably the best question summing up the whole film. Both versions of Beauty and the Beast, the original fairytale and the live-action one released this year adapted from the story of the same name, are so well known and captivating. Starring Emma Watson as Belle, a stunning independent young lady and Dan Stevens as the Beast, a once handsome and cold hearted prince of France, the great casting is already worth the ticket price. A fantasy, musical and romance all poured into one, the film illustrates a story beginning with Belle having a simple village life which could never satisfy her until her beloved father, Maurice (Kevin Kline), is captured by the Beast for picking a rose in his garden. Out of her love for her dad, Belle sets off on an adventure to rescue her old man. In exchange for her father's freedom, Belle is held prisoner in the Beast's castle. Despite her fear, Belle befriends the enchanted servants that had been turned into different furniture in the palace. And after some time, Belle even manages to look through the hideous appearance of the Beast and sees the sophisticated and kind man within. They fall in love, but can they live happily ever after just like all those other Disney princesses? Will they break the spell and help the Beast turn back to human? Watch the film to find out!

5 To be honest, regarding this as a masterpiece is nothing more than my true admiration of the film. As difficult and complicated as producing a movie could be, Beauty and the Beast is totally on a whole new level. This is an act highly dependent on the imagination and skills of the actors. For example, Emma and Dan are the two people who had the most interaction with the illusory furniture-like staff. They must pretend to be talking to and looking at someone all the time to make sure the scenes look real. Beyond that, when everyone thinks that the Beast is just created with a computer, it was actually Dan Stevens walking on stilts while wearing a forty-pound grey suit to make the movement of the Beast natural. Also, the actors did a really good job in bringing all the characters alive. The eye-catching villain Gaston, a narcissistic war veteran and hunter obsessed with Belle's beauty but overlooked her truly precious characteristics inside, played by Luke Evans is so underrated in my opinion. He is like the mirror of the Gaston in the cartoon, arrogant, self centered and two-faced. All the other sidekick characters are so endearing as well. The friendship between Lumière (Ewan McGregor), the candelabra and Cogsworth (Ian McKellen), the mantel clock, is also one of my favorite parts of the film. It is lovely how the servants tried to lead a normal life just like when they were human before they had been transformed into household objects. 5 Other than the brilliant acting, the special effects are also amazing. The perfect dubbing and the CGI animation of the furniture are also keys for the success. It is also enjoyable to listen to the songs composed by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice. The well written lyrics and the sweet melody turn the whole film into something more grand and unique. In fact, it was the director, Bill Condon's idea to remake the film in a more radical way - to do it as a full-on musical movie. It was a daring and innovative move but it turned out to be just as fascinating as it could be. I bet most of you have listened to the song 'Beauty and the Beast' as it is played in so many shops when the soundtrack was released. Recorded by Ariana Grande and John Legend, the duet became an immediate hit.

6 6 With more original and new songs, such as 'How Does a Moment last forever' performed by Dion and 'Evermore' sung by Josh Groban, they give the audience something extra. Some may say the beginning of the film where Belle strived to walk out of this ordinary life and gets disturbed by Gaston while the other villagers sing how Belle did not fit into the society is boring. Yet, when we think about it more, it is actually a smart arrangement. It shows the contradiction of Belle's life before and after she meets the Beast. While people thought it was wrong for a woman to have knowledge and wisdom and even forbade Belle to teach another little girl to read, the Beast encouraged her to read more and even gave her his marvelous library as a gift. While Gaston only wooed Belle so as to get her as a trophy wife, the Beast truly understood and loved her and would do anything for her. How people thought that the Beast must be cruel and how he said 'I am not a Beast' and showed mercy to Gaston unexpectedly when Gaston tried to kill him also shows how much improvement the Beast has made and what love could do and change a person. With all the elements combined, that is how Beauty and the Beast helps adults feel like kids again and kids now believe in modern fairytales. This live-action film is totally faithful to the original details while adding more intriguing extensions to it. It is a movie I would highly recommend for people who want to go on a fantastic and dreamy journey or simply enjoy a good show. Great acting, beautiful music and fine storyline, what else could we possibly ask for?
