3 What is Parallelism? Also referred to as parallel construction or parallel structure, this term comes from Greek roots meaning beside one another. Parallelism refers to the grammatical or rhetorical framing of words, phrases, sentences, or paragraphs to give structural similarity.

16 Parallel structure for opposites One special kind of parallel structure that orators use to relate opposites is called chiasmus. Kennedy s inaugural address: A B Let us never negotiate out of fear, but let us never fear to negotiate. B A

Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. Notice the parallel structure that makes this contrast possible.
