NMS Newspaper October Edition 2018 POLL: What will you be for Halloween? Monster? Movie or Show Character? Book Character? Animal? Or Other? Click here to take the poll. 1
Halloween Facts Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, and celebrated their new year on November 1. Before Halloween was called Halloween it was called All Saints Day, All-Hallow s Eve or All-Hallowmas. The first Jack O'Lanterns were actually made from turnips. Opinion Writing Many people are debating the appropriateness of horror movies around the time of Halloween. Parents don t like that some kids go to bed with the vision of the monster in the closet. I personally believe that at this age, kids should have the responsibility to choose what they want to watch and deal with the consequences. Common Sense Media rates almost all horror movies as 16+ in age rating. After conversing with the Newspaper Team I discovered that most of our team members say either kids shouldn t watch horror movies or the decision is up to the parents. I think that the final decision is that it is up to the parents if you want to cower in your bed during the night. Others disagree, saying that it should be the adolescents decision. And that if they want to be scared they should be allowed to choose. I disagree with this opinion because sometimes kids fail to see how things will impact them. But, in the end, it s always up to the parents! If you have any opinions about this topic or you want another opinion article please to @fcstu.org. 2
The Broadcasting Club; Behind the Scenes In order to understand how our morning announcements get made, our news crew got a sneak peek behind the scenes of the Broadcasting Club. First of all, receives s from teachers with requests for an announcement. She copies and pastes what they wish of her to put in the announcements a Word document. This Word document is then displayed on a computer screen in front of the anchor persons who will be reading them for the announcements. Then the camera person starts filming and the anchor persons say what they need to say, sometimes this takes a few tries! Finally, loads the announcements into imovie and adds in the background and special effects (Intro + Exit). The Broadcasting Club is all about flexibility and solving problems. Sometimes the Broadcasting club does not have enough Anchor people or there is a mechanical issue, but, by the deadline of 8:45, the Broadcasting club always gets it done! Below we have an interview with Peyton Warner. Who says, Really helps me manage everything!, as well as an interview with herself! 3
Peyton Warner Peyton What is your favorite thing to do in school? Broadcasting club, you know, start the day off good! Peyton Peyton Peyton What is your favorite thing to do out of school? Probably free drawing and painting (art). What does The Broadcasting Club do? We film morning announcements, giving information on everything that s going on What is your job? Club Manager, I make sure everyone's in order if we re short one person I get to be on the camera too. What do you teach? I help students learn how their computer can help them using Microsoft Office Suite. What is your favorite thing to do in school? My favorite thing is finding a new way to teach students information so that they will enjoy it and that includes making assignments relate to their personal lives and or interests. What is your favorite thing to do out of school? Traveling, swimming, hanging out with friends and family. What is your job in the broadcasting club? As of now I am organizing the students to come in on certain days writing the script collecting, s editing them, filming and editing in imovie and distributing the announcements. The best part of teaching vs worst part? Meeting new students and watching them learn new things about the computers they use every day. Least: when students distract each other during an important lesson. The most important thing is having a fun attitude while sharing important information with the rest of the school! - 4
Exclusive Interview With Mr. Chester! Our reporters conducted a Q&A with the face of our astounding school principal, Mr. Chester. Q: What is your job like as a principal? A: As a principal, my job is making sure students have what they need, and what they need is different in different places. You need certain academic systems, academic resources and supports, and all of that is my responsibility. In addition, the safety and security of the building -- the systems in place and a safe learning environment, and the appearance of the building -- all of that falls under my purview. Anything that pertains to this school community that you can think of is my responsibility.. Q: Who outside your work life helps you most with your job? A: My wife is my number one fan. She s also a teacher, so she gets what we do here day to day. She is the first and last person I see every day. She can tell when I m really entrenched in work or when I m more relaxed. She does everything I can imagine to make sure I m in a good place so I can make sure you re in a good place. Q: What made you want to become a principal? A: Good question! I resisted education as a child. My mom was a principal and I went to college originally for computer science. I didn t know what computer science was, it was first beginning to buzz. I was really good at math, and my teachers pushed me to computer science, told me I could make good money. I started off but didn t like programming. So I went back to what I was good at -- math. So I got my math degree and I came to a crossroads in my junior year: what am I going to do? Am I going to be an actuary? An air traffic controller? Am I going to teach? One summer, I was a substitute and I loved teaching. So I used my degree to teach. As I worked my way up the ranks, I wanted to impact more students. To impact more students, you jump into administration, so now you re not just impacting 140 kids a year, you re impacting 1,000. So I worked as assistant principal at Alpharetta High School. I had a great principal there who loved what she did. She was so impactful over the community. It really sparked my interest in moving forward in that direction. Q: What do you enjoy most about your job? A: Interactions like this! The further you get away from the classroom, the less time for one-on-one time with kids. The immediate pleasure of education comes from great moments of interacting with kids, so whenever I get the opportunity to sit down and talk with kids, that s my favorite! 5
Q: What do you think is the most important part of the Wildcat Way? A: When you put all of it together, it s shaping students to become great citizens. It s not just enough to have you smart, going to great jobs, or creating new jobs. For you do the good work, you have to be good people. You can take the same knowledge and build things that will hurt people, or create things that help people. When you are a good person, that intelligence goes towards good. Q: Currently, students who want to study during Study Skills aren t allowed to. What do you think should be done in Study Skills? Should they be allowed to study? A: It is a balance. A few years ago, second period was a free-for-all -- What we viewed a lot was playing on phones, and it wasn t a productive use of time. We wanted to create a more structured place and time for you to get extra support through technology. Last year was the first year where we were more specific towards iready and Aleks days. I will say, the data that came back from our assessment shows it works! We had an 11% change in the growth percentile. On the other side, we should use Fridays to teach study skills, such as a format for note taking. Q: Echoing the theme of our newspaper, what will you be for Halloween? It would probably be along the theme of one of my favorite movies. It would be me, my wife, and the dog dressing up. An easy one would be the dog: Toto, my wife as Dorothy, and me as the Tin Man. I think we could do a superhero thing: a Thor theme or maybe even Guardians of the Galaxy. Q: Are there any last words of advice for the parents, staff, and students reading this? A: Take time to live. Don t get caught up in your day to day, that you don t enjoy the great moments you have on a daily basis. We all have work but don t forget to enjoy your life and family. Cherish the moment., At the end of the day, if everything else is taken from you, the moments that make you smile cannot be taken from you. 6
