Unit 1 Summary: Draw It Up T here is an amazing God working behind the scenes of our everyday lives. While our lives may seem ordinary and boring, this God is just waiting to break into our day and take us on adventure. Like any good quest, there s plenty of excitement and danger along the way, an enemy to outwit and mysteries to solve. In this adventure-themed series, kids will learn how to pay attention to those kairos moments, when God gets their attention and invites them to join His epic quest. In Kairos Quest, kids will use the Life Shape of the Learning Circle to discover how to hear from God and act on what He tells them. 49

LESSON 3 (Large Group) Key Concept: When God speaks to me, I need to do something about it. Bible Story: Esther Risks Her Life (Esther 1-8) Bible Verse: Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves, but do what it says. James 1:21 3DM Principle: The Circle (Plan and Account) Large Group Overview: Kids will learn how Esther put her faith into action by risking her life for her people and that they can display the same kind of action-oriented faith in their everyday lives. Huddle Overview: Kids will review the circle and participate in an activity to demonstrate the difference between talking about faith and putting faith into action Lesson Outline Game: Awesome Aqua Obstacle Race (10 min) Lesson Set Up: Swimming Example (Trust) (5 min) Bible Story: Esther (10 min) Application: Kairos examples for Kids (5 min) 50

Kairos Quest Challenge: The Awesome Aqua Obstacle Race Enter the teaching area with beach gear, beach ball, towel, swim noodles, etc. Hey guys, welcome to Kairos Quest, where we re discovering the adventure God has in store for us every day. As you can see, I ve come today prepared for a water adventure. Today, I have another amazing Kairos Quest Challenge to start things off, the Awesome Aqua Obstacle Race! I m going to need two boys and two girls to come up and represent their teams! Supplies: Instructions 6 Swim gear such as flippers, a snorkel, life jacket, swim noodles, beach towel 6 Diving mask or goggles covered in duct tape to serve as blindfolds 6 Tape for the floor 6 Beach Boys music (Surfin USA or any other upbeat track) Set Up: Tape off a circular path on the floor. The path should begin in the front of the room (on your stage or teaching area) and wind through where the kids are seated and go around the back of the room before returning to the front. How to Play: Bring up two boys and two girls. One person on each team will put on all of the swim gear, including the opaque diving mask or goggles, and his or her teammate will lead him or her through the obstacle course. The boys team will follow the path in one direction. The girls team will follow the path in the other direction. Choose two girls and two boys to play. 51

Here s how it works, guys. We need one person on each team to put on all of this swim gear over his or her clothes, including these special blindfolds. Your partner s job is to safely lead you along the obstacle path, around the room, and back up to the stage before the other team. Boys will go this way. Girls will go the other way. Let s get suited up and get ready to play! Help kids get their swim gear on. Line them up at the starting line and point them in the right direction. On your marks, get set and go! Play the Beach Boys song as the kids race around the room. At the end of the game, debrief with each kid who had to wear the blindfold. Hey, tell us what it was like to go around the room blindfolded? Was it scary? How did your partner do? Did they keep you safe? Was it easy or hard to trust them? Great job guys! Let s give it up for our contestants. Dismiss kids to their seats. Lesson Set Up Today s Kairos Quest Challenge reminds me of a story. How many of you guys like to swim and splash around in the water? Has anybody ever jumped off a diving board or a high dive? Tell a personal story, such as the following one, about learning to swim or jumping off a diving board or about someone demonstrating their trust. When you were younger, did you ever jump off the side of the pool and have somebody catch you? I remember the first time we went swimming the summer my daughter Kate had learned to walk. Before she could walk, we would just carry her in and out of the water. Now, though, she was big enough to jump into the pool herself. But the water was way over her head. She couldn t swim. She should have been scared. She should have hesitated. But she didn t. As soon as she saw me in the water with my hands held out to her, she took off running and jumped right into my arms. You know why? Because she trusted me. She had faith in me. She believed in me. But she believed in me so much that it pushed her to take action. It s one thing to say you trust someone. It s another thing to do something because you trust them. 52

For the last several weeks, we ve been talking about going on an adventure with God, what we call a Kairos Quest. It s kind of like a treasure hunt, except the treasure we re after is growing to become more like Jesus. And the way we do that is by learning to listen to God and do what He says. There are a lot of people who talk about listening to God by reading their Bibles or going to church or listening to Christian music, but they don t necessarily do what God says. They say they believe in God, but they never do anything about it. The Bible says that real faith, faith that leads to a life of adventure, always pushes us to do something. Bible Story Choose kids to act out the story of Esther. Each actor will be given a line to say when the name of their assigned character is read. Gather a prop for each character: King (scepter), Esther (princess tiara and accessories), Haman (black hat), Mordecai (funky / crazy hat) Today s Bible story is about a girl who had to make a big-time decision about her actions. Okay, I m going to need some actors from the audience today to come up and help me with today s story. For my first volunteer, I need a brave princess. Any girls out there like princesses? (Choose a volunteer to play Esther. Put a tiara on her head and give her any other princess accessories you may have. Direct Esther to stand on the side of the teacher area opposite the chair.) This girl is named Esther. Everybody say, Hi, Esther. (Kids say, Hi Esther. ) Esther here is the star of our show. 53

Next, I need someone who is really good at giving orders. Who s really good at giving orders? (Choose someone to play the king. Give them props such as a crown, royal robe, and a scepter. Feel free to improvise with a stick, plunger or other funny object that works. Lead him to sit on a chair on the other side of the teaching area.) You re King Artaxerxes. So let s put you on your throne over here. Whenever I say king, I want you to hold out your scepter here and say, Off with their heads! Let s practice. King. (Kid raises scepter and say, Off with their heads! ) Great, now I m going to need someone very wise. Who here today thinks they re really wise? (Choose a boy to play Mordecai. Give him some kind of funky hat to wear.) Okay, you are Esther s cousin Mordecai. Mordecai loved God a lot so whenever I say, Mordecai, I want you to salute and say, I have faith in God. Super, we need one last actor to come and play the villain of the story. Who thinks they can play a villain? I need someone who can be mean, so on the count of three, if you want to play the villain, I want to hear your best diabolical mwa, hah, hah, laugh. One, two, three. (Kids do their villainous laugh. Choose one to play Haman and put a black hat on them. A small girl could be funny in this role.) Wow, that was scary. All right, this frightening villain is called Haman. Every time I say, Haman I want you to give us that menacing growl. Let s try it. Haman (Kid growls.) Haman, you are the king s helper, so you re going to go stand over here by the king. (As you tell the following story, make sure you emphasize the words in bold so that kids can catch their cues. If kids miss their cue, have some fun with it, back and up and repeat it again slower, exaggerating the word in bold even more.) Okay, on with the show. Our story begins during a time when the Israelites, God s special people, are living as captives in a foreign land called Persia. The king of Persia was a man named Artaxerxes, and one day the king got really mad at his queen and decided he wanted a new wife. So, he had a big beauty contest and commanded that all of the young ladies of the kingdom should come and present themselves to the king. One of those young ladies was named Esther. Esther was an Israelite, and she had been raised by her kind and wise uncle Mordecai. Now, Mordecai warned Esther not to tell anyone she was an Israelite, because some of the Persians did not like God s people at all. 54

The Bible says that of all the beautiful young maidens in the kingdom, the king liked Esther the best and he made her his queen, but he still did not know that she was Jewish. One of the men who did not like the Jews was a wicked man named Haman. Haman worked for the king. He was very important and very powerful. (Begin to lead Haman to walk across the teaching area to Mordecai.) In fact he was so powerful that every day when he walked through the city gate, everyone would bow down to him. Well, everyone except one man, the man named Mordecai. See, Mordecai remembered that Haman s family had been enemies with God s people for a long, long time and he refused to bow down to him. As you can imagine, this made Haman very angry. In fact, Haman was very, very angry. Haman was so angry that he vowed to not just destroy Mordecai, but all of God s people, the Jews. And unknown to him, that would also include Queen Esther. (Lead Haman back over to stand beside the king.) One day, the king and Haman were hanging out and Haman said, You know there are these people living in your land, and they are not like us at all. They don t even obey your laws. I think you should totally wipe them out. And just like that, he tricked the king into signing a law that all of the Jews would be put to death. When word reached Mordecai, he became very upset. He tore his clothes and began to cry because he, Esther, and all of their people would be killed. He quickly sent word to Esther and told her the terrible thing that had happened and that she should go to the king and beg for mercy. Esther said, No way. Are you nuts? You know the rules. I can t just go marching into the throne room and talk to the king. No one can do that. If I did, the king would have me killed. See, the king was a little high strung. You had to be invited to go into his throne room. If you just showed up, you would be put to death, unless the king pointed his gold scepter toward you and spared your life. That 55

meant it was okay. That meant he actually wanted to see you, and you wouldn t be punished. But anyone who dared to barge into throne room uninvited was totally risking his or her life. At this point in the story, Esther would have said that she had faith in God, but her faith was useless because it wasn t causing her to take action. She may have believed that God was all-powerful. But she didn t believe it enough to go risk her life with the king. Real faith causes us to take action every time. But Mordecai wasn t done. He sent her another message and said, Esther, just because you re the queen doesn t mean you will escape Haman s evil plan. If you don t help your people, God will do it some other way, but you and your family will perish. Who knows, Esther, maybe this is the whole reason God made you queen, so that you would be at the right place at the right time to save your people. When Esther heard this, she a major kairos moment. She knew that God was talking to her through Mordecai, and she knew she had to do something about it. God had made her the queen to put her at the right place at the right time to try to save her people. In that moment, Esther made a decision. She believed in God so much that she was willing to take action. Now, she had real faith. She said, Mordecai, tell everyone to pray for me because in three days, I m going to go see the king. And if I die, I die. Three days later, she put on her royal robes and went to the throne room to see the king. (Move Esther across the teaching area to the king.) Esther didn t know what was going to happen. She didn t know how the story would end. All she knew was that God had spoken to her and she had to do something about. When she walked into the throne room, the king saw her, and she knew this was it. Either God would save her or she would die. But then something amazing happened. The king raised his gold scepter toward Esther and spared her life. She went in and invited both him and Haman to join her for dinner, and there she told the king all about Haman s evil plan. When he realized he d been tricked, and that Haman wanted to hurt the queen, the king had 56

Haman punished. And Esther and all of God s people were saved. The best part of all is that Mordecai became the new special helper to the king. Application This week, on your Kairos Quest, you may realize that God is talking to you, and you have to decide what you re going to do about it. Maybe God s been telling you it s time to fess up and tell your mom what really happened to that broken lamp. Maybe God s been telling you you need go do something nice for the lonely elderly lady who lives on your street. Maybe God s been telling you that you need talk to your friend about some bad choices he or she has been making. Maybe God s been telling you He wants you to give something away to someone who needs it more. Maybe it s something else. Whatever it is, just like Esther, you re going to face a choice. Just like Esther, it might require a lot of courage to do what God s telling you to do. Just like Esther, you re going to have to decide if you just kind of believe in God in your head or if you have real faith in Him in your heart. Do you have the kind of faith that makes you do something about it? Refer to flip chart or white board with last week s circle diagram on it. Last week we looked at this straight, boring line as our everyday life. We said that sometimes, bam God breaks through with some kairos. We learned that we need to say Whoa! when we notice God at work. Then we say, Hmm and think about it. Then we find some friends to talk about the whole thing. Everybody say, Yadda, yadda, yadda. But it s not enough just to think about it and talk about it. If you want to be courageous like Esther, you have to come up with a plan. Turn to someone next to you and say, What s the plan, Stan? (Draw a horizontal line in the bottom left corner of the circle and write the word, plan. ) 57

Then you need to get a buddy who helps with your plan and cheer you on. Turn to someone next to you and say, Gooooo team! Write, Buddy Up in the middle of the left hand side of the circle. Whoa! Buddy Up Plan Hmmm Yadda, Yadda, Yadda Today in your huddle time, you re going to play a game to help you think about what it means to put your faith into action. Prayer God, Thank You for leading us on an adventure. Please help us to hear your voice and know what you want us to do. Then give us the courage to be like Esther and actually do it. Amen 58

LESSON 3 (Huddle) Key Concept: When God speaks to me, I need to do something about it. Huddle Overview: Kids will review the circle and participate in an activity to demonstrate the difference between talking about faith and putting faith into action. 13 Huddle Time Welcome / Large Group Review Gather kids in a circle either on the floor or around a table. Welcome to huddle time. In our huddle we re going to have a lot of fun unpacking what God has been saying to us in our large group time. First of all, let s see how much you guys caught from today s story. 6 What was the name of the queen from today s story? Esther. 6 What was the problem she faced? Haman wanted to destroy all of her people and the only way she could save them was to risk her life and go to the king. 6 What could have happened to Esther when she went to see the king? She could have been killed. 6 What happened? The king welcomed her and she told him all about Haman s evil plan. 6 Do you think it was easy or hard for Esther to go to the king? Hard. 6 What are some hard things God has asked you to do before? The amazing thing is that Esther trusted God enough to risk her life to do what was right. Now that is some serious trust. But that s what it takes if we want to go on an adventure with God. 61

Huddle Activity 1: Circle Review Lead kids through the circle discussed during large group. You will draw a shape similar to the one below, and ask the kids to help you fill in the blanks: Whoa! Buddy Up Plan Hmmm Yadda, Yadda, Yadda Supplies: 6 flip chart, dry erase board or poster board 6 markers Okay guys, for the last couple of weeks our teacher has been showing us this Kairos Quest drawing during our large group time, and I want to see how well you guys remember it. It all starts with this line. Draw draw a horizontal arrow going left to right. Does anyone remember what this line is? Take responses. It stands for our ordinary, everyday lives. The Bible teaches us, though, that if we pay attention we will see something amazing happen. Draw starburst in the middle of the line. Someone breaks into our day gets our attention. Who is it? Take responses. Right, it s God. He is getting your attention because He loves you and wants to take you on incredible adventure. What are those amazing God moments called? Take responses. Kairos. God gets our attention in all kinds of ways. Maybe it s with a Bible verse, maybe it s through a person, maybe it s just through something going on in your life. All of that stuff is kairos. Once God gets your attention, you have to decide what you re going to do about it. What s the first thing we do when God breaks through? Take responses. 62

We notice it. We observe it. We say, Whoa! Everybody say, Whoa! Write Whoa! in the upper right corner of the circle. After we notice it, what do we do? Take responses. We think about it. We say, Hmm. Everybody say, Hmm. Write Hmm in the middle of the right side of the circle. Then we find some friends, and we do what? Take responses. We discuss it. We talk about it. Everybody say, Yadda, yadda, yadda. Write Yadda, yadda, yadda on bottom right corner of the circle. But we also said it s not enough just to think about it and talk about it. We have to have a plan to do something about it. Turn to someone next to you and say, What s the plan, Stan? Write the word Plan on the lower left corner of the circle. Then we said we need a buddy to help cheer us on to carry out our plan and do what God s told us to do. Write Buddy up in the middle of the left hand side of the circle. Turn to someone next to you and say, Gooooo team! Great job reviewing the circle. Remember, this isn t just a picture. This is a picture of your adventure with God. It s all about asking, What s God saying to me? and What am I going to do about it? Doing something can take a lot of trust. Huddle Activity 2: How God Speaks The purpose of this game is to get kids thinking about faith and trust. You will blindfold the kids one at a time and have them demonstrate their trust by falling backward into your arms. Supplies: 6 blindfold Today we re going to do something called trust falls. How many of you guys trust me? Go around the group and ask each child individually, Do you trust me? 63

Okay, it s one thing to say you trust someone, but it s another thing to do something about it. You know I wouldn t let you get hurt, right? Here s the way a trust fall works. For you guys who really, really trust me, I m going to have you put on a blindfold, cross your hands over your chest and fall backward into my arms. There won t be any way for you to be certain I ll be back there to catch you, but you just have to trust that I wouldn t let you down. Okay, who wants to go first? Take volunteers to do trust falls into your arms. Be careful not to drop anyone. After all, this is a game about trust. Once everyone has had the chance to go, sit down and debrief from the activity. What was it like falling backward without being able to see? Was it scary? Did anybody wonder if I would really be there to catch you? Did anyone have a hard time trusting me that much? It s one thing to just you trust me. It s another thing to actually put yourself at risk to show your trust. Huddle Discussion Today s Bible story was all about trust. Another word for trust in the Bible is faith. Faith is being so sure we can count on God that we ll do anything He tells us to do. Faith isn t just something that happens in our head. It s only real faith if we live it out in our lives in the things we do. Esther could say she believed in God all day long, but it wasn t until she risked her life with the king that we saw just how real her faith was. Just as you guys risked your safety to show you trusted me, Esther risked her safety to show God she trusted Him. That s real faith. You re probably not going to face a grumpy king, but what are some things that God might want you to do this week that could be hard? Tell the truth, talk to someone who is different than me, share my stuff, be patient, etc. 64

That s right. Those things can be really hard to do. That s why you need to make a plan and buddy up. Making a plan is a simple as saying this is what I m going to do and when I m going to do it. One way you could buddy up is just by telling someone what you plan to do. Then they can be praying for you and ask you how it went. Let s say you lied to your mom about your grades at school, and you know God has been telling that you need to go make it right and confess. Okay, what could your plan be? Right after my mom gets home from work, I m going to go right up to her and tell her the truth and that I m sorry for lying. How could you buddy up and get someone to cheer you on? I m going to ask my best friend to pray for me and tell him how it went at school the next day. When you have a plan and a buddy to cheer you on, you ll be blown away by how you can put the stuff you know you need to do into action. Bible Verse Pass out Bible verse cards to kids. Today s Bible verse is from James 1:21 and it says, Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves, but do what it says. If we just listen to what God says but never do anything about it, we re just lying to ourselves. We re not really listening to God until we act on what He tells us. Have kids repeat Bible verse. For fun you can have them say it several different times in different ways (loud, whisper, helium voice, etc.) Prayer Take prayer requests. Write them down so that you can pray over them during the week. Follow up on prayer requests from last week. Take time to pray together as a group. You may want to close out with a prayer like the following one. God, thanks that we can trust you. Please help us to not just listen to you, but to have enough faith to take action. Show us what you want us to do and give the courage to do it. Amen 65

LESSON 3 (Family) Today I Learned: When God speaks to me, I need to do something about it. Bible Story: Esther Risks Her Life (Esther 1-8) Family Challenge Divide your family into teams for a fun competition. You can compete in a board game, a sport, or in some other way. If your family has three members or less, team up together to compete against another family. After you have fun competing, talk about how important teamwork was during this game. Then remind your kids that teamwork is important in our lives too. As we listen to what God is telling us and make a plan to do what he says, we need to buddy up. It s hard to do all this on our own, so we need to find a teammate who can cheer us on and do what God has told us to do. * Act Account Observe Learning Culture Plan Reflect Discuss * The four questions you are asking are ways of figuring out what your kids Kairos moment was 67

Dinnertime Discussion At dinner time this week, ask one of these questions to get your family talking. 1. What was your favorite part of today? 2. What was the funniest thing you saw today? 3. What was the hardest thing that happened to you today? 4. If you could have a do-over, what would you differently today? Use these questions to help kids discover how God may be trying to get their attention through the circumstances of their day. Follow up these conversations by asking kids how the events of the day made them feel and what God might want them to do about it. 68
