1 Red Riding Hood vs. Wolf Scripted Role Play Step one: Introduction and Ground Rules. Agree to mediate. Welcome to mediation! We are and. We are your mediators. What are your names? I am Red Riding Hood Just call me Wolf. Mediation is an opportunity for the two of you to talk out the problem, discuss possible solutions and then choose the solutions which are best for both of you. We are not here to judge you; we are here to help you solve your problem. Everything you say will be kept secret unless you talk about drugs, weapons, or abuse of any kind. If you do, we have to stop. The rules for mediation are: Be honest. We will show respect, no fouls. One person will talk at a time. Work to solve the problem. Take responsibility for carrying out the agreement. Do you both agree to these rules? ( Yes; Yes) Do you have any questions? ( No; No) Step Two: Gathering Information: Red and Wolf s Stories Red Riding Hood, please tell us what happened. I was taking some bread and cookies to Nana s house. Nana wasn t well so I thought I would pick some flowers for her. All of a sudden, the Wolf jumped out and started asking me a bunch of questions. He was being so gross and mean! I was scared so I ran away. You were taking food to your Nana s house and the Wolf appeared and scared you. Is that right? Yes

2 Wolf, please tell us what happened. The forest is my home. I care about it and try to keep it clean. I was just cleaning up some garbage people had left behind when I heard a noise. I looked and saw this girl dressed in a cape with her head covered like she didn t want anyone to recognize her. Then she started picking my flowers and stepping on my new little pine trees! I was very upset about the way she was treating my home and didn t believe her story about going to her Nana s house. You were upset about the way this girl was treating your home and you asked her what she was doing. Is that right? Yes, that s right. Red, is there anything you want to add? When I got to Nana s house the Wolf was dressed in my Nana s nightgown. He tried to scare me with those big ugly teeth. He scared Nana too. I found her under the bed! Thank goodness the lumberjack came and saved me! You are saying the Wolf dressed up like Nana and tried to scare you? Wolf, is there anything you want to add? She s got it all wrong! Her Nana and I are good friends. Before she got there we talked and decided to teach Red a lesson for stepping on my trees and picking my flowers. When Red saw me in the bed she made nasty comments about my ears, my eyes, and my teeth! That really hurt me. I should have known better, but that made me mad and I jumped from the bed and tried to scare her. The next thing I knew, she was screaming and a lumberjack was standing in the doorway. I got scared and jumped out the window and ran. Ever since, there has been talk in the forest that I am a bad wolf. I don t know why Nana never told you and the others my side of the story. It just isn t fair. I m lonely and sad.

3 You re upset about the rumors and have been afraid to play in the forest. You don t understand why Nana didn t tell your side of the story. Is that right? Red, is there anything else you have to say? Nana has been sick lately. She seems confused and her memory is bad. So you think it is possible that Nana didn t tell Wolf s story because she is sick? So the problem is that you, Red, thought Wolf was trying to scare you. Is that right? Yes And you, Wolf, were trying to teach Red a lesson about keeping the forest neat. Is that right? Step 3: Looking for Solutions: Getting Red and Wolf s Ideas Red; Mediator1: You both know each other s side of the story. What do you want Wolf to do to solve the problem, Red? I want Wolf to quit hiding behind trees and apologize for scaring me. What do you want Red to do to solve the problem, Wolf? I want Red to tell everyone in the forest that I am not a bad wolf and start liking the forest. What are you willing to do Red to solve this problem? I can stay on the path in the forest and I can tell the people in the forest that it was all a mistake. What are you willing to do Wolf to solve this problem?

4 I can let Red and her friends know that I am around when they come in to the forest. I can check on Nana and make sure she is okay. Is there anything else? ( No; No) Step 4: Choosing the Best Solutions: What Red and Wolf are willing to do. Now let s choose the solutions that are best for both of you. Wolf, which solutions do you like? I could apologize to Red for scaring her and I could help her when she comes to the forest. I could also check on Nana. Red, which solutions do you like? I could tell the forest people this was all mistake and be more careful in the forest. Will these solutions work for both of you? ( Yes; Yes) Wolf, would you like to apologize now? I am sorry for scaring you Red. Red, when will you tell the forest people this was a mistake? I ll tell them as soon as we leave here. And I apologize to you too Wolf. Is this problem solved? ( Yes; Yes) Step 5: In the Future: What Red and Wolf could do differently. What could you do differently in the future Red? I could stay on the path and not pick flowers. I could get the whole story before I talk about people. What could you do differently in the future Wolf? I could quit scaring people and ask them nicely to help keep the forest clean. Step 6: Closing: Ending the Mediation
