At Columbia University Rare Books and Mss. they have an open door day for the public and they bring out documents that would be of interest from the life of the university -- menu from the 1920s, for example (re: ideas for justifying the purpose to the public) Re: Certification -- when can we take this exam? i.e. how long do we have to be working yes!

Michelle, I think there is much to say for this immediacy of contact with the documents -- the aha moments that archivists experience all the time but that they stay somehow in the silence of that closeup with the document but sharing this with the public brings out that excitement in the open, makes it visible how exciting documents can be taking photos with documents is brilliant Great! Yay! at Columbia they brought out menus of a student dining hall on a Thursday and that brought a lot of excitement with the visitors; something from the everyday life ha ha Are archives willing to interview people out of state/country? This is different that other industries! Haha wow! Yes! This happened to me at a previous grant job! They flew me up for the day and I met everyone and talked/interviewed with everyone in the museum. It was exhausting!!!

Pat (to All): Thanks that's good information what is the relationship between RBMS and SAA (which subgroup is closely related)? what is the relationship between national and regional organizations, how do people manage that in practice (e.g., MARAC / SAA)? that is a pity, I have always been quite surprised at that "their way vs. the SAA way" -- interesting tell us about some of those specialized and niche subareas (film studies, visual resources, art history/curatorial work) how do you deal with conservation for a wide variety of materials -- outsource, learn yourself, try yourself? awesome!!
