4 Artists Salon Four Wednesday evenings January 18, February 15, March 14 and April 18 6:30 8:00 pm Facilitator: Joan Weisenbeck, fspa Investment: $12 Our journey of creativity is deeply linked to our journey with the creator. Many of us long for a more creative life, but we often encounter roadblocks such as time, lack of confidence and fear. In this series we will listen, watch and learn from artists who have taken steps to integrate creativity into the fabric of their lives. This will be a time to experience beauty and celebrate the creative life. January 18: The Power of Music Malinda Gerke, fspa (harp) with Nina Shephard, fspa (violin) and Marcella Steffes, fspa (cello) The power of music is strong among all peoples and is part of world cultures. Music has an affect on every aspect of life. Malinda Gerke has been practicing a non-scientific mode of music therapy for over ten years. The influence of music on her life has been gradual and almost non-perceptive in its growth, but it is non-the-less very real. Marcella s inspiration for music began early with piano lessons at the age of six. As a teacher, Marcella developed the gift of music through teaching the Japanese Suzuki Method of cello and violin to children from ages four through high school. Nina Shephard has played the violin in orchestras, liturgical celebrations and various festive occasions. Each Sister will explain how the gift and power of music has helped shape her life and will perform for the participants. February 15: A Bravado Brush Ken DeWaard For Ken there is nothing more rewarding and challenging than painting under an open sky, surrounded by the scents and sounds of nature, along with its ever-changing color and harmonies. The feelings Ken evokes in his paintings are due in part to the excitement and passion he feels while capturing the fleeting effects of light, or the wonderful color nuances and harmonies presented by nature and all of her beauty. Join award-winning plein air artist Ken DeWaard and learn of his journey into the world of art and the places it has taken him. March 14: Weaving Words JoAnn Adragna Shird Joanne Adragna Shird is a weaver, craftswoman, and writer. She will share how allowing nature to enter oneself, births a creative force. and how it is the making process even more than the end product that is where creativity lies. It does not matter what it is one is making, from a woven rug, to a poem, to a Halloween costume, to a birthday cake, to a fine meal, there is a reverence that travels from mind to hands that sustains. She will also share how in the times of paucity in her creative life, she fought to regain her passions. April 18: The Mystery and Beauty of Mandalas Joan Weisenbeck, fspa Joan will share her ongoing interest in the art form we call mandalas. This sacred circle that we create to draw us into oneness and wisdom is also a tool for meditation. This presentation will invite us to reflect on the ways that mandalas can be instruments of self-discovery and reminders of our relationship with the Divine. You will be invited to create a mandala as part of the experience of the evening. (No fear, it is easy!) Franciscan Spirituality: Awakening to Our True Identity Friday, January 20 (7:00 9:00 pm) and Saturday, January 21 (9:00 am 5:00 pm) Presenter: Jeff Dols Investment: $95 includes meals. Limited bedrooms at $42/night. Before our modern media gave us self-transforming superheroes, we had the transformative stories of the saints. Like a 13th-century superhero, St. Francis of Assisi was blissfully unaware of his secret identity, as he spent his young life as a wealthy troubadour. Then powerfully, the practice of contemplative prayer transformed his life to one of poverty, service and true joy in Christ. Like Francis, our secret identity lies dormant, waiting for the transformative power of the spirit. Come and begin to discover your secret identity the Christ within. By awakening Christ consciousness through prayer and taking a fresh look at scripture, you will start to see the Christ within yourself and within everyone and everything. Who is this Woman We Call Clare of Assisi? Three Wednesdays, January 25 February 8 6:30 8:00 pm Presenter: Joan Weisenbeck, fspa Investment: $10 per session or $25 for the series. It is the year of Clare of Assisi. Franciscans around the world are celebrating the 800th year of her decision to follow in the way of Francis of Assisi. This meant that she renounced her inheritance, rejected her social standing and place in society and the prospect of marriage to a knight or nobleman. Clare of Assisi, a noble lady and the daughter of a feudal lord, was a strong, thoroughly convinced and heroic woman who lived the spirit of Francis but with a flavor unique to her own call. In this three-part series, Clare will speak to us in her own words and inspire us to hold sacred the journey that is ours. We will be invited to inwardly voice the truth of our own vision in life as we ponder her contemplative life, her call to radical poverty, her faithful and consistent dialogue with the church and her ministry of healing. We will gaze upon the person Clare to see clearly the gift of the feminine Franciscan heritage. Journey: The Eight Principles of Peace Friday, January 27 (7:00 9:00 pm) and Saturday, January 28 (9:00 am 5:00 pm) Presenter: Rosalie Hooper Thomas Investment: $95 includes meals. Limited bedrooms at $42/night. Register and pay three weeks in advance to receive a 20% discount. We all have the capacity to create a state of peace by opening ourselves to the oneness of the Universe. Black Elk, Oglala Sioux spiritual leader explains that we realize this first peace within us and this awareness grows and influences those around us and connects with other like-minded people throughout communities and nations. We will explore the teachings derived from ancient Mayan and pre-mayan peoples that have evolved into eight universal principles that are the foundation of the first peace. Rosalie Hooper Thomas is a spiritual director, presenter and facilitator. For the past 15 years, she has studied with spiritual teachers of the ancient teachings of peace. Rosalie weaves these principles throughout her work as a spiritual guide and facilitator. Farewell to Theresa When new guests come to the Franciscan Spirituality Center, we often ask what drew them to us. Invariably, people will comment on the beauty, effectiveness and high quality of our communications, both in print and online. For the past 14 years, the person responsible for developing and designing a consistent, recognizable look for all our brochures and flyers has been Theresa Washburn, our marketing and communications coordinator. For many in our community, when they think of the Franciscan Spirituality Center, they think of Theresa. So it is with heavy hearts that we bid her adieu as a member of the FSC staff. Theresa s passion for the Center shows not only in the publications we see and the many programs and groups she has launched but in her tireless service of the spiritual home she has so clearly loved. Theresa is a gifted writer and has the soul of a poet. She has written many reflective essays for Center publications, but more importantly, has created communities of writers and poets who gather here. She has presented workshops where writing and creativity are paths to spiritual awareness. With the creation of the writers conference and the facilitation of writing groups, she has made the Center known as a place for writers. Theresa has been instrumental in telling our story in new ways by creating and maintaining a website that reflects our Franciscan spirit. She has produced television advertising pieces that have helped FSC become better known to the community. She has expanded our marketing reach by growing with the evolving electronic media. Theresa will be missed. She has been active in helping to plan and execute many of our Center functions. As staff of the Center, we are grateful to have journeyed with Theresa and shared her many gifts. While Theresa will no longer be on staff, she won t be going far. We are thrilled she will be pursuing her passion by continuing with her writers groups and developing new programs as a guest presenter at the FSC. We look forward to a long and dear relationship. Thank you, Theresa! Meeting Rooms The Franciscan Spirituality Center offers a wide variety of rooms to fit the needs of your meetings, retreats, and training sessions. Growing up in north central Wisconsin, the second oldest in a family of 14 children, the FSPA were my teachers through 16 years of education concluding with graduation from Viterbo University with a degree in nursing. I continued to nourish that Franciscan spirit by becoming an Affiliate 12 years ago and a Prayer Partner about four years ago. Presently, I work as a nurse in the Wellness Center at St. Rose Convent. My husband Carl and I just finished a six year stint as the directors of Ring Lake Ranch, an ecumenical retreat and conference center located in the Wind River Mountains near Dubois, WY. We live in La Crosse with our two dogs Annie and Buddy. Over the years, I have had many wonderful experiences at the FSC. The Franciscan spirit is certainly alive and well in this special place. As a volunteer here, I hope to help provide an environment in which God can work in the lives of the people drawn to the Center. 7 At the Center At the Center 8

6 Coming in March The Form of Life Is: The Four Core Values of Franciscan Living Sunday, March 4 (6:30 pm) to Saturday, March 10 (noon) Retreat Director: Fr Charles Faso, ofm Location: St. Rose Convent, La Crosse, WI Investment: $375 includes retreat, meals, and housing Commuters: $215 includes retreat and meals St. Rose fspa Residents: $95 The form of life of the Brothers and Sisters is this: to observe the Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ, living in obedience, in poverty and in chastity. With these words, the TOR 1982 Rule and Life begins. Reading the 1982 TOR Rule clearly reveals that there are four core values, like four threads, that weave through the 32 articles of the nine chapters. During these days of the retreat, let us together listen to and reflect on these four core values: conversion, poverty, contemplation/prayer, minority/humble service. We as Franciscans today are called to live these values with joy and commitment in a world that desperately needs our witness. The Rule is light for the darkness, hope for the despairing, healing for the wounded, modeling of what it means to be totally human and a disciple of Jesus the Christ. As we say yes to God s love in our Franciscan lives, the Gospel message can be seen and discovered by others. Let us enter into this retreat with an open heart to reflect on the deep purpose of religious life that the reign of God may be manifest. Fr. Charles Faso, ofm, is a Franciscan Friar of the Sacred Heart Province (St. Louis, MO). He was born and raised in the Chicago area, joined the Friars in 1960 and was ordained a priest in After teaching music at the high school seminary west of Chicago for seven years, Fr. Chuck continued his studies in liturgy at the University of Notre Dame. After traveling to parishes and dioceses as a liturgy consultant, he began 20 years of ministry at St Peter s Church in the loop of Chicago as musician, liturgist, confessor, adult education co-coordinator and pastor. He also taught liturgy at Catholic Theological Seminary in Chicago. For ten years, beginning in 1998, Fr. Chuck has preached parish missions throughout the USA; and since 2008, he preaches only to Franciscans men and women, religious and lay. Fr. Chuck continues the Franciscan charism of being an itinerant preacher on the move from one village, convent, or center to another. Journaling Through Transition Saturday, March 10 9:00 am 4:00 pm Facilitator: Theresa Washburn Life changes. Sometimes we move through it easily; other times it feels like pushing a load of concrete. Journaling can help. It can make us aware of our resistances, help us identify our allies, and aid in understanding the phases of change. Using the hero s journey model coupled with various journaling techniques, we will learn to use these tools to help make the transitions of our lives more bearable and our self-acceptance much greater. Bring pen, paper and an open heart. Serenity Retreat: Step Six and Step Seven: Love Opens Life s Possibilities Friday, March 9 (7:00 9:00 pm) and Saturday, March 10 (9:00 am 4:00 pm) Facilitators: FSC staff Investment: $95 includes Saturday lunch. Limited bedrooms at $42/night. Though each of the Twelve Steps is a separate process, the finest line between two steps is the one between Steps Six and Seven. We spend time and effort becoming aware of our character defects, getting to the point where we re ready to have them removed. We then ask and wait. However, we find there s much more to do. We have to prepare spiritually. There is the need to find a way of asking that fits our individual spiritual paths. It is essential to practice spiritual principles in the place of character defects. Some of these principles include: sincerity, authentic humility, patience and honesty. A deeper understanding of who we are unfolds in the presence of love. This is a closed retreat for those recovering from alcoholism. The Norman L. Gillette, Sr., Scholarship is available to financially assist those who are in recovery from alcohol or chemical dependency. Foundations for Servant Leadership: Understanding Human Motivation Friday, March 16 (7:00 9:00 pm) and Saturday, March 17 (9:00 am 4:00 pm) Presenter: Rosalie Hooper Thomas Investment: $195 includes meals and housing Servant leadership involves moving from ego-based to soul-based leadership which is good for the leaders, good for employees and good for business. Using the insights from the Enneagram, a system of personality typology that combines psychology and spirituality to achieve self-awareness, we can learn about our own leadership style as it relates to communication with and understanding of one another. Limited bedrooms at $42/night. Register and pay three weeks in advance to receive a 20% discount. Theologians, poets, artists, writers and philosophers have long known that in order to create anything, including a deeply fulfilling life, the first requirement is that we become quiet. It is in this space of stillness that truths surface, understandings expand; and we discover in the silence of our hearts answers to living authentically. Silence is essential, too, in accessing the deep rivers of creativity and creative potential that run in each of us. Anne LeClaire is a memoirist and the critically acclaimed, best-selling author of eight novels published in 24 countries. She leads seminars and workshops exploring silence, creativity and deep listening. Anne began a formal practice of silence, meaning that for the past 18 years she has not spoken on the first and third Mondays of every month. Out of this practice came her memoir, Listening Below the Noise: The Transformative Power of Silence (Harper-Collins, 2009), which was named one of the 50 best spiritual books of that year. She leads silent retreats on Cape Cod. Compassionate Communication: The Language of the Heart Saturday, March 24 9:00 am 4:00 pm Presenter: Barb Kruse Learn to pay attention to how you listen. Explore the gift of your emotions and how they communicate what is alive in you. Discover how some core beliefs can become obstacles to compassion. Tap into the beauty of your values and needs. Compassionate communication offers a way of communicating that centers our attention on what is most human about us. With a focus on true honesty and empathic listening, compassionate communication guides us in how we express ourselves and hear others. Celebrating Clare of Assisi Saturday, March 31 9:00 am 4:00 pm Watch our website for a day with Clare of Assisi to celebrate the 800th anniversary of her decision to follow Francis of Assisi s way of life. Join us for this day and learn about this amazing woman who founded the Order of the Poor Clares. To find out more about our programs, meeting rooms, hermitages and spiritual direction, call (608) , fscenter@fspa.org or Spiritual Direction Preparation Program Are you being called to spiritual direction ministry? Do you sense a hunger for personal/spiritual growth? Is there a place for deeper listening in your work/personal relationships? If your response is yes to any of these questions, you are invited to explore our Spiritual Direction Preparation Program (SDPP). Since the Center opened its doors in 1985, nearly 300 individuals have been trained as spiritual directors. The program involves several weekend workshops annually over a three-year period. Participants receive individual supervision while learning to integrate theory and practice. While the program prepares participants to companion others regardless of their spirituality, the SDPP teaches from the Judeo-Christian tradition. Program participants come from various educational backgrounds and all walks of life: religious, social services, education, healthcare, business, church ministry and retirement. No formal training in spiritual direction is required. According to feedback from past participants, involvement in the SDPP offers a sense of community, a spiritual home and oortunity for transformation. Alications are being accepted through June, 2012, for the next program which begins in the fall If interested in receiving an alication or brochure for SDPP , please contact SDPP co-directors Linda Kerrigan: lkerrigan@fspa.org/ or Barb Kruse: bkruse@fspa.org/ At the Center At the Center 10

7 Coming in April Celebrating the Sacred Triduum Retreat: Poco Lento Thursday, April 5 (9:00 am) to Sunday, April 8 (after Liturgy) Presenter: Fr. Richard Tulko, ofm Investment: $30 for non-fspas Limited bedroom at $42/night. Meals and housing for $62/night. Join the Franciscan Sisters in celebrating the most sacred of all times in the Church Year, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday Each session on Thursday, Friday and Saturday begins with prayer at 9:00 am, followed by a talk aropriate to the day. Reflection time is provided throughout the day after the morning talks. Services on Holy Thursday are at 7:00 pm, Good Friday at 2:30 pm, Holy Saturday at 7:00 pm, and Easter Sunday at 9:00 am. Retreat ends after liturgy on Sunday. Poco Lento is a musical term which means a little more slowly. As we celebrate the Sacred Triduum for the first time according to the newly revised Roman Missal, we will savor the liturgies of these three most sacred days at a leisurely pace, free from the demands of preparation, planning and implementation. Input will be balanced with participation. Fr. Richard Tulko, ofm, has been a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Province of the Franciscan Friars since He was ordained a priest in 1964 and has served as editor, hospital chaplain, member of the retreat staff at Burlington, WI, and secretary of the province and formation director. He presently serves as chaplain to the fspas at St. Rose Convent in La Crosse. Social Justice Stations of the Cross Good Friday, April 6 10:00 am to completion Meeting at FSC front steps Remembering the oression suffered by Jesus during his walk to the cross, this contemplative journey will bring awareness to how we as a people and as an earth community still suffer today. On this walk, we will process in silence through downtown La Crosse, stoing to pray and sing at places that represent the wounds of our world. Based on the traditional Stations of the Cross practiced by Christians for centuries, this will be our third annual Social Justice Stations of the Cross. Franciscan Spirituality and Simplicity: Letting Go Friday, April 13 (7:00 9:00 pm) and Saturday, April 14 (9:00 am 4:00 pm) Presenters: Jeff Dols and Rosalie Hooper Thomas Investment: $95 includes lunch. Limited bedrooms at $42/night. Virtually every faith tradition contains the same stunning paradox the secret to fulfillment can be found in the practice of letting go. The lesson of great wisdom-teachers throughout history has been detachment and surrender. These are the keys to true hainess. This was certainly the case with Francis and Clare, who paradoxically found great joy in a life of simplicity and poverty. Come and learn more about the path to true joy from the stories of Francis and Clare and from the presenters who will share their experiences of letting go and how it enriched and transformed their lives. Foundations for Servant Leadership: Acting for the Common Good Friday, April 20 (7:00 9:00 pm) and Saturday, April 21 (9:00 am 4:00 pm) Presenters: Carl Koch and Rosalie Hooper Thomas Investment: $195 includes meals and housing The servant leader must not only intend to do good, but she or he must also have the skills to do the good intended. A key skill is discerning what actions need to be taken. During this session, we will examine and work with tools of discernment and decision making, which will actually contribute to the common good. Participants will be encouraged to develop a plan of practical steps in becoming the servant leader they are called to be. Ancient Oils, Modern Uses: Holistic Healing with Essential Oils Saturday, April 28 9:00 am 3:00 pm Presenter: Deborah Schwab, fspa, lmt For thousands of years the aromatic essences derived from various forms of vegetation were used by ancient cultures. This knowledge and skills were passed to future generations. Today the use of therapeutic-grade essential oils to enhance the healing process of body, mind, spirit and emotions has become widely recognized as part of holistic medicine. In this workshop, we will take a look back to Biblical times and some precious oils that were a part of the lives of the ancients and explore the modern uses of oils today. Participants will be able to experience a number of essential oils and create a blend to take home. The oils will also be incorporated into a guided meditation and prayer. For questions, dschwab@fspa.org. To register call (608) or e- mail fscenter@fspa.org or Sacred Windows to the Divine: Icon Writing Retreat/Workshop Sunday, April 29 (7:00 pm) to Saturday, May 5 (mid-morning) Director: Phil Zimmerman Investment: $625 includes retreat/workshop, meals and housing Commuter: $505 includes retreat/workshop and meals $150 non refundable registration fee to reserve a place Register early. The image of St. Clare of Assisi is written in honor of the 800th anniversary of the dedication of her life to following the way of St. Francis of Assisi. St. Herman of Alaska was one of the first Eastern Orthodox missionaries to the new world and is considered by Orthodox Christians to be the patron saint of the Americas. Each icon will be written from start to finish, guided in a step-by-step gradual process by Phil Zimmerman, ending with a completed icon, varnished and ready to display. All materials and sulies are included. Anyone can enter into this process, expressing through the icon the mystery of the image portrayed. We begin each day by meditating and praying with icons. Phil sulements these sessions with information about the history of Byzantine and Russian iconography. Visit for information or his rendition of the icons to be painted. Phil Zimmerman, a noted iconographer, has been coming to he Franciscan Spirituality Center since Teaching has taken him to many areas throughout the US and Canada as the popularity of icon painting continues to grow and captivate a significant following of artists from all religious and cultural backgrounds who find it to be spiritually meaningful. Since opening his first studio, Phil has taught over 1500 students. Icons produced in Phil s studio are painted according to ancient guidelines and techniques, incorporating modern artists materials. Selected subjects are chosen by careful study of time-honored prototypes. The excitement of iconography is that it combines artistic skill and creativity with spiritual motivation and discipline and religious devotion. Joan Weisenbeck, fspa, has been on staff at the Franciscan Spirituality Center since January of Besides being the hostess for the retreat, she creates and leads the meditations and prayers with icons each morning during the workshop. She has hosted workshops with Phil since 1998 and has written many icons. Crossing Nature s Chasm: A Journey with the Horse Friday May 4 (7:00 9:00 pm) and Saturday, May 5 (9:00 am 4:00 pm) Facilitator: Theresa Washburn Investment: $95 includes meals. Limited bedrooms at $42/night. Horses have been a part of our myth and history for centuries. The equine relationship with humans defies the prey and predator conflict created by nature. While most domesticated prey animals are used for food and hide, the horse partners with the human in a rare crossing of the line. In doing so, they let us into their world. Through equus we learn to loose our predatory drive and to let go of our ingrained beliefs of humans as final authority over nature. We learn to live in relationship with other species. Using videos, exercises and a live horse presentation, we will cross into the realm of the horse and begin to understand their world and their role in guiding us deeper into divine mystery. Journey: Prayers of the Earth Friday, May 11 (7:00 9:00 pm) and Saturday, May 12 (9:00 am 5:00 pm) Presenter: Joe Orso Investment: $95 includes meals. Limited bedrooms at $42/night. Whether a backyard tree, a garden, a sky full of stars, or some other outdoor experience, most people can name a natural place that has impacted them. Indeed, for so many of us, our most spiritual experiences the times we feel most connected to the sacred haen when we are out in nature. On this retreat, we will move more deeply into these experiences, paying attention to how they might become guideposts in our prayer and spiritual lives. At the same time, we will explore how our individual stories fit into the larger story of people in our region who are finding their way back home to our most primal mother, the earth. Please bring an object or picture that can help tell your story of relationship with a place. 11 At the Center At the Center 12

As part of that journey, I was introduced to the book St. Francis and the Foolishness of God. This book was my first deep dive into the lives of Francis and Clare, and I was puzzled by the paradox that both were able to find joy only after foolishly giving up a life that should have made them hay (as culture defines hainess). As my relationship with the Franciscan Sisters grew through the affiliation process and now through my work at the FSC, I am drawn by the great joy they radiate every day even in the face of suffering and loss. What is it about this Franciscan spirit that allows them to move from sadness to joy, even in the midst of life s difficulties? In the early life of Francis, he had everything that suosedly would make one hay, including wealth and a high standing in society. He loved to party; he was cheerful and generous; and yet, he did he did not find true joy until he was able to find meaning by encountering a reality bigger than his individual life. Similarly, Clare came from wealth and good standing; and yet, 800 years ago this year, she was unhay enough to renounce it all to follow Francis. For both Francis and Clare, the key to turning from sadness to joy was in searching and finding deeper meaning for their lives. I believe the mission of any spirituality center is to journey with spiritual seekers in their search for God, meaning, and wholeness. Scores of books in the self-help section of your local bookstore promise to help us achieve wholeness. However, after a few failed attempts at making ourselves whole, we often find it takes a power beyond ourselves to start the necessary inner transformation that ultimately leads to wholeness. Often this begins with an intimate encounter with God by whatever name you describe the ultimate reality. In this encounter, our preconceived notions of ourselves and our world are shattered, and we are left with more questions than answers. For Francis, an encounter gazing upon the crucified Christ turned his worldview upside down. For Clare, it was less of a one-time encounter and more a recognition that following Francis was the next step in a transformational process already active within her. For me, it was an unexpected encounter with the nurturing feminine face of God that melted my preconceptions into a pool of loving acceptance. Since then, I have been gradually unpacking the meaning of that moment with my spiritual director. After each of our moments of dissolved illusions, we long for someone to help us find meaning in our experiences and discern what it all means for our lives and our relationships with others. Through the centuries, this has been the gift of spiritual companions who can journey with seekers of all traditions in their quest for meaning. If your journey has led you in a search for God, meaning or wholeness, I would invite you to consider visiting with one of our gifted spiritual directors at the Center. They have listened to and journeyed with many seekers and have seen the power of the Spirit at work in healing and transforming lives. In this 800th anniversary year of Clare s discernment, we invite you to follow her journey from sadness to joy. We would love to journey with you.
