His greatness was in his weaknesses. He was human, just like you and me. If we acknowledge his humanity, we can model him as Franciscans. Francis struggles as his journey through life winds down; he found it hard to let go and surrender his dream. It was through his struggles not in spite of them that he grew so close to Jesus. He founded the Franciscan Spiritual Direction Program in 1981 at the Franciscan Retreat Center in Cincinnati. He is also co-founder of the Franciscan Gathering in Tampa, Florida. Currently he ministers on the parish team which serves the students attending the University of Cincinnati. Fr. Tom holds two graduate degrees from St. Bonaventure University and the Franciscan Institute and has done theological studies at the University of San Francisco. Anyone can enter into this spiritual process, expressing though the icon the mystery of the image portrayed. We begin each day with meditation and prayer. Phil supplements the workshop with information about the history of Byzantine and Russian iconography. Noted iconographer, Phil Zimmerman, has been coming to the Franciscan Spirituality Center since Icon writing is a spiritual and meaningful prayer practice, as well as a technical art form, that is beautiful and inspiring. Teaching people how to write and paint icons has taken Phil all over the U.S., Canada and Europe. As the popularity of icon writing grows and captivates artists from all religious and cultural backgrounds, Icons produced in Phil s studio are painted according to ancient guidelines and techniques, incorporating modern artist materials. The excitement of iconography is that it combines artistic skill and creativity with spiritual motivation, religious devotion and discipline. Amy Taylor, FSPA will provide reflective prayer experiences in connection with the icon being written. Our relationship with food sometimes reveals the way we look at God, our bodies, how we care for the earth and for the poor. Mealtime invites us to connect to the Divine source of all that nurtures. With activities, presentations, prayer and discussion, this day will help us experience God through the gift of food as we are invited into gratitude, awe and dynamic connections. Vicki Lopez-Kaley has been influenced by Franciscan values all her life and has a degree in religious studies from the College of Saint Teresa in Winona. As a self-taught cook, she enjoys the creativity of producing dishes from scratch for her family and friends. Sister Rose was a national park ranger and naturalist for 12 years and brings her love of nature into all that she does. She enjoys collaborating with people to connect Spirit and Earth through storytelling and sharing her listening heart. Sister Amy has led prayer as liturgist and pastoral associate in parishes in Wisconsin and has a master s in pastoral studies from Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, Missouri. During the day, Sister Amy will provide deeper reflection on the different types of Psalms and in the evening, Father Jim will celebrate the Psalms through music. Come prepared to sing, pray, and be deeply moved by the power and beauty of the Psalms. This retreat is open to those who want to connect music and their faith life. It is a great way for parish musicians, choir members and directors to deepen their spirituality as they regularly lead worship using these timeless and uplifting Psalms in their congregations. Together we become aware of God s presence in all our hearts as we hear and share our stories. As a group, we become conscious of the Divine and expand our understanding of God working within us. In this retreat, we will review and discuss a variety of models for leading small group direction with an emphasis on silence, contemplation, deep listening and sharing. Participants in this retreat will have the opportunity to experience group spiritual direction. This retreat is ideal for graduates of FSC s Spiritual Direction Preparation Program or for spiritual directors who desire to companion others in group spiritual direction. This is also helpful for anyone interested in becoming part of a group. Joan Weisenbeck, FSPA recently retired from her role as FSC retreat coordinator and lives in La Crosse, Wis. She has companioned people in group spiritual direction for nearly 20 years, both at the FSC and at a large parish in Illinois. Sister Joan was a supervisor for the Spiritual Direction Preparation Program at FSC and offers individual spiritual direction. Spiritual Direction Since 1985, we have trained over 300 people in the practice of spiritual direction. The Spiritual Direction Preparation Program (SDPP) extends over three years, giving participants an opportunity to integrate theory and practice. While the SDPP prepares the participant to direct others regardless of their faith or religious affiliation, we teach from the Judeo-Christian tradition. This program is designed to form and train candidates through prayer, teachings, practical workshops, quarterly meetings and one-on-one supervision. What is Spiritual Direction? Spiritual direction is the powerful gift of compassionate listening. We have four trained and experienced spiritual directors on staff to meet with you whenever you are ready. When you feel the need or desire to share your sacred stories with someone who will listen intently and patiently to your words and feelings, without judgment and with love, we are here. Spiritual directors won t give you solutions, advice or answers, but rather invite you to go deeper into your life story. This compassionate listening can provide immeasurable healing and spiritual growth. We are here for you. We also offer private and directed retreats at the Franciscan Spirituality Center or at our hermitages located in St. Joseph, Wis. about a 20 minute drive from La Crosse. Life is a succession of open and shut doors. This conference is about the many ways we encounter God in our life as we open new doors to the unexpected. Keynote Speaker: Paula D Arcy Walking the Path Before You The simple truth is that God comes disguised as our lives. Always a surprise, almost never as anticipated, God appears to be hidden because the mental image we have is so far removed from the One who beckons through our circumstances and challenges. But if one day we choose to walk the actual path that is before us or meet life, and not turn away then new doorways will open and our sight will change. In our hours together we ll explore what it means to pass by things for years without really seeing them, until one day you begin to meet life in an entirely different way. Together we ll dig deep for the courage to ask larger, life-giving questions, and to see, not only with physical eyes, but with the eyes of the heart. Paula D Arcy is a writer, playwright and speaker. Her non-profit, Red Bird Foundation, supports healing and hope, and has sponsored two international gatherings of women known as WOMENSPEAK. She has authored nine books, worked as a therapist in private practice, and established an acclaimed retreat and speaking ministry. Among her best-selling books are Gift of the Red Bird, Waking Up to This Day and her newest book is Rivers of Sorrow, Currents of Hope: A prayerbook for the grieving. 14 FRIDAY BREAKOUT SESSIONS - Select Two Holy Invitations for Busy People with Amy Zalk Larson If we are to experience change and newness in our life, we need something much greater than strategies, tools and advice. We need a new way of being a contemplative way of being that allows us to encounter the hidden God. Explore seven invitations into the contemplative way of being in the midst of busy lives. Amy Larson serves as one of the campus pastors at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. She holds a degree in religion from Luther College and a master s of divinity from Luther Seminary. Amy is a graduate of the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation s Clergy Spiritual Life and Leadership Program. Areas of emphasis in her ministry include contemplative living, discernment, spiritual formation, and interfaith dialogue. She is a founding partner of the Journey Conversations Project which encourages contemplative conversations around big topics. From None to All-Theist with Kristy Walz Kristy Walz was just shy of 40 when she joined a church for the first time in her life. Although she grew up in a loving family, it did not include religion. The stories and traditions of religious expression were like a foreign culture to her. As a busy professional, wife and mother, she began to become aware of the hidden God in the people she was meeting. In this session, Kristy will describe how slowly, a uniquely personal adult spirituality began growing where seemingly there was nothing before. Kristy is the CEO of Confluence Consulting which works with businesses by coaching, leading workshops and facilitating strategic planning. Kristy is currently enrolled in the FSC s three-year Spiritual Direction Preparation Program and is an adjunct presenter for the FSC. Spirit Songs: Music in the Holocaust with Sonja Larson Genocide evokes the worst and the best qualities of the human spirit. The Nazis used music to torture and dehumanize, but music also enabled the victims of the Holocaust to endure terrible suffering and in many cases, to survive. As a music performance student, Sonja Larson researched the role of music in prisoners letters and diaries and Holocaust survivors written and oral accounts. In this session, Sonja will describe how music played an important spiritual role by providing the victims of genocide with the means to find hope and comfort in a reality seemingly void of any humanity and compassion. Sonja will graduate from Viterbo University with a major in vocal performance in May. She presented her research at the 5th Warsaw Conference for Young Judaic Studies Researchers in Poland last May and at an international conference in Lucca, Italy entitled Protest Music of the 20th Century this November. Sonja is a native of Dawson, Minnesota. Heart Lessons from an Autistic Daughter with Steve Spilde Ten years ago Steve Spilde and his wife, Jeannette, adopted a little girl from China and named her Sophia, from the Greek word meaning wisdom. At the time, they didn t realize how appropriate this name would be. When it started to become clear their daughter had significant learning delays related to autism, Steve began reflecting on the many ways loving this child was changing him. Steve will share what Sophia has taught him about valuing yourself, embracing vulnerability, coping with anger and disappointment, setting priorities, letting go of shame and discovering love at a deep transformative level.
