Khalil Gibran These few words summarise Rotary and Rotarians and we are fortunate to be the ones on the giving side. We had the privilege of having Milind Deora as our speaker on 1st November which turned out to be a very interesting session. Having personally known so many of our members, he mentioned more than once, that he felt he was speaking to acquaintances in the living room of a friend's house. On 11th November, we celebrated the Charter Night at Sunville. This was a special night as our Club entered its 50th year. On 15th November, Dr. Lucky Kasat took us on an interesting virtual climb of Mt. Everest, prodding us to identify our peak in life. We all learnt about Bitcoins on 22nd November when Sachin Dedhia gave us a rundown on this crypto-currency which all of us had heard of but few knew anything about. On 29th November, Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala, noted Bariatric and GI-oncology surgeon spoke to us about the growing menace of obesity. On 4th November, the Rotary District had organised Partners Sports Day at Priyadarshini Park for members and spouses. There was a huge turnout with enthusiastic participants from across the District. Members and spouses participated in many traditional and unusual races and events and there was fun and gaiety all over. On 19th November, the Rotary District had organised the Rotary World Fest at the Race Course. The annual event, started a couple of years ago, has horse races (used as a chariot) to raise funds for the many service projects that Rotary conducts apart from a great way for bonding with fellow Rotarians from across the city. There were many stalls serving a variety of food as well as scintillating musical and dance performances by the likes of Louis Banks, George Brooks and Salim-Suleiman in the evening. On 24th November, our Club was the co-host for an event organised by the District to felicitate PDG Gulam Vahanvaty on being appointed as the Trustee of The Rotary Foundation (TRF). PDG Gulam is known to many of us and this appointment is a singular honour to our District and our country. Many PDGs spoke of their great regard for PDG Gulam at this event and several embarked on a journey into history speaking about their experiences of having interacted or worked with PDG Gulam who was visibly overwhelmed by this adulation. On 26th November, I attended a Medical Camp organised by the Inner Wheel Club at SL&SS High School. Dedicated doctors who are members of our Club devoted their Sunday morning to this worthy cause and enthusiastic Inner Wheelers were present in great numbers to support them. This event eventually turned into a brunch. The Inner Wheel members brought homemade dishes which were presented for all to partake. We all look forward to the socially active month of December and there is a line-up of interesting Speakers coming to the Club in the next few weeks. Pres Rtn Manoj Jalan DECEMBER Mid-Town Bulletin

3 news 1st Nov: Milind Deora on India Ahead The dashing and confident Mr. Milind Deora, member of the Congress Party, addressed our club on 1st November. PP Dr. Firoze Mirza introduced him. Milind Deora has the distinction of being inducted in the Lok Sabha as one of the youngest members. He is the former Minister of State with the Ministry of Information Technology and Communications and the Former Minister of State with the Ministry of Shipping with the Government of India. He won the 2004 Lok Sabha elections with a margin of 10,000 votes against BJP's Jaywantiben Mehta from the Mumbai South constituency. In the 2009 Lok Sabha election, Deora was again elected from Mumbai South Constituency, this time by a margin of 1,12,682 votes. Milind Deora Milind Deora spoke about the Eastern waterfront project and said that he had initiated it when he was an MP and that Aadhar was first put forth by the Congress. Mr. Deora went on to say that it is unfair that BJP says that Congress did nothing for last sixty years. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not consult his colleagues on many issues, whereas the past Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was very humble and very knowledgeable. PP Dr. Firoze Mirza, Milind Deora and Pres Manoj Jalan In his opinion, demonetisation was a very bad idea and the common man suffered great hardships. The BJP opposed GST when the UPA was in power but they have implemented it now, albeit very badly. Mr. Deora felt that it could have been implemented better earlier. When members asked Mr. Deora about Rahul Gandhi s poor leadership, he mentioned that we shall see something happening on this issue in the next two months. He defended Mr. Gandhi s leadership by saying that in politics, people's perceptions change very often. Anand and Bhaskar Khira The Club celebrated its Charter Night on 11th November at Sunville Banquets. The meeting began with opening remarks by Pres Manoj who stated that this Charter Night was special as our Club enters its 50th year. Pres. Manoj then requested PP Rahul Mehta to take the evening ahead. PP Rahul in his trademark style, filled with wit and humour, called upon the Charter Members to come forward and accept a token of appreciation from Pres. Manoj while Rtn. Anil Tibrewala sang a song befitting the Charter Members profession. Similarly, a witty oneliner welcomed each Past President as they were honoured by Pres. Manoj. Charter Member PDG Dr. Shirish Sheth shared the history of Club s formation and spoke about interesting and prestigious events of the Club over the years. A cake was cut by all Charter Members and Past Presidents to celebrate the Club s Charter. A highlight of the evening was celebrating PP Mohan and Shanti Shahani s 60th wedding anniversary. They cut a cake to celebrate the same accompanied by loud cheers and greetings by everyone present. Cakes were also cut to celebrate all the birthdays and anniversaries falling in the month of November. It was a musical evening as singer-cum-keyboard player Moniji enthralled the audience with songs from yesteryear. The dance floor came alive as everyone DECEMBER Mid-Town Bulletin

Rotarians Anil Tibrewala and Abuzar Zakir also sang to everyone s delight. The food and service was impeccable as always thanks to Rtn Zeba Kohli. There were generous contributions by Charter Members Kirit Jasani, PP Mohan Shahani, PP Ghansham Dembla, PP Bimal Shroff, Rotarians K.K. Khemka and Shaunak Thacker. All members thoroughly enjoyed the event and many were sitting there late chatting away sharing their Rotary stories and experiences. 6 news 15th Nov: Speaker Dr. Lucky Kasat Dr. Lucky Kasat Paediatric Surgeon Dr. Laxmikant Lucky Kasat, spoke to us on a topic far removed from his profession. Talking of Mt. Everest, his subject was What is the Peak of your Life?. Using a PowerPoint presentation Dr. Kasat embarked on a virtual climb of Mt. Everest with the audience. Dr. Kasat spoke about the enormous effort required to just prepare for the climb and the importance of acclimatisation for altitude. He spoke about the history of the conquest of Mt. Everest and how many perished in this journey before they could reach the summit. Edmund Hillary with Tenzing Norgay were the first ones to be successful on 29th May Since then, scores have reached the peak and many have done it more than once. The scary truth is that one in five lose their life before they can reach the summit. This has not deterred the hundreds who begin the climb every year. There have been cases where people with great disabilities have not been discouraged. Mountaineers who are blind, hearing impaired, with lost limbs or using prosthetics have overcome their fear and have reached the peak. That s when Dr. Kasat asked, what s your peak? We all have to identify our peak or goal in life and move towards it without being deterred by the challenges that come our way or difficulties the environment around us may present. If people with great disabilities can traverse this unbelievable journey, the problems faced in the journey of life are minuscule in comparison. The meeting ended with a hearty round of applause by an overwhelmed audience. Rtn Ashok Sanghvi Inner Wheel Club hosts Medical Camp Rotarians Dr. Anil Tibrewala, PP Dr.Kirit Mody, Pres Manoj & Sonali Jalan and Usha Aggarawal at the medical camp The Inner Wheel Club of Bombay Mid-Town held its Annual Medical Camp on 26th November 2017 at Students Literary & Scientific Research High School. A pre-camp investigation of haemoglobin count was done for the students by N M Medical and screening of the eyes by Lotus Eye Hospital. On the day of the camp, the students were examined by a team of doctors on every aspect of general health. The dental examination was done by doctors and interns of Government Dental College, ophthalmic screening and refraction by Lotus Eye Hospital, eye check-up by Dr. Kirit Mody, gynaecological check-up by Dr. Varsha Patil, skincare by Rotarian Dr Anil Tibrewal, nutrition by GP Dr. Pratibha Patil and counselling by Dr. Banoo Ismail, head of teaching programme at Psychoanalytic Training & Research Centre (PTRC). Scholarships were given to three students who passed their SSC in 2017 with merit. Our thanks go to Unilever, Cipla, and Mohan Lalwani for their support. We would also like to thank all the doctors and interns who attended the camp, and our members and the school staff for their generous support and co-operation. 8 news 22nd November: Sachin Dedhia on Bitcoins which Bitcoins, although the earliest representative, now belongs to a group of many cryptocurrencies like Ripple, Ethereum, Dash just to name a few. He explained to us what these currencies are, where we can find them, where we can trade in them and what the market looks like today. Since there has not been any statement by the Reserve Bank of India about the legality of these currencies in India, trading in them remains in the dark space between legal and illegal, or more precisely, one finds these cryptocurrencies as usual tender for payment in what is called the Darknet. Sachin Dedhia Our Speaker on 22nd November, Mr. Sachin Dedhia, can really be described as a man of the 21st century. If one reads his biodata, instead of finding things like Head of Department or CEO, one finds roles such as Cyber Crime Investigator, Certified Ethical Hacker and international expert in the fields of Cyber Security, Ethical Hacking, Cyber Crime Investigations or Digital Forensics. He has, however, spoken at our Rotary Club before on some of these topics. This time his topic was Bitcoins. The talk first riveted all present to their seats and then hands shot up with a multitude of questions. Mr. Dedhia gave us a basic grounding in the field of Cryptocurrencies of As a consequence of Mr. Dedhia demonstrating active access to websites where one can find these cryptocurrencies and also how to trade in them, there were many members who had questions about the practicality of trading in these currencies. One thing that Mr. Dedhia emphasized again and again, was that if one wanted to trade in these currencies, one should only invest if you are in a position to regard your initial investment as lost right from the beginning! The many questions caused the meeting to be extended over the usual time limit and even after Mr. Dedhia had been given a gift and a Vote of Thanks, there were a few Rotarians who kept him occupied overtime with a multitude of questions regarding the topic. Finally, after a very illuminating and highly interesting talk and lots of advice as to how to deal with cryptocurrencies, Mr. Dedhia was thanked by the remaining Rotarians. Hon. 10 29th November: Speaker Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala problem even in nations like India and China which has a part of their population that is malnourished. Predominantly, it is a disease reflecting affluence where good food, laden with fat and sugar, become a bigger and bigger part of daily consumption and slowly accumulates in the body. It ultimately boils down to simple maths the calories consumed are more than the calories burned and slowly we are heading towards being overweight and later, obese. Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala is a noted laparoscopic surgeon, specialising in bariatric surgery and GI oncology surgery. He is known internationally for his pioneering work in the field of scarless bariatric surgery and is a keen researcher in the field of diabetes surgery. Debonair and handsome, Dr. Lakdawala is a doctor to many famous people and is a celebrity himself. He presented his talk with an informative PowerPoint presentation. He said obesity is becoming a major Sugar, he said, was one of the top items in our daily diet that we need to watch out for as it harms the body in several ways. The moment you limit or restrict your sugar intake, most of the calorie heavy items will be off your list and weight control will be an easy journey. He spoke at length about the various types of procedures which come under the umbrella of gastric banding. These procedures are a boon so long as the postoperative care and instructions are followed but if not adhered to, the lost weight can be back sooner or later. A whole lifestyle change is essential for this to work. The loss of weight can provide greater control of sugar in the body, higher energy levels and general feeling of well-being. Dr. Lakdawala answered many questions raised by the audience and the meeting ended with a hearty vote of thanks.
