2016 Summer Semester MAY THROUGH AUGUST

Art Expressions Mary Ellen Quinn 4 th Tuesday at 2:00pm AL-3 This monthly course will require you to delve deep inside for artistic inspiration. These classes will begin with some source of imagery. This could be music, poetry, or a visual. When this imagery is presented you will be asked to relax and if necessary listen for a moment, and allow your mind to flow freely in relation to it. This will be followed by a brief discussion on all the different thoughts that arose, and how the imagery made you feel. Then you will be encouraged to draw paint or even write a representation of these thoughts. Articles of Inspiration Mary Ellen Quinn Every Friday at 4:30pm AL-L This social endeavor is an easy way for you to learn something new and participate with your peers. This class will highlight all different forms of inspiration. Each month will have a different form of inspiration and there will be a different topic within that form each week. These forms will be as follows: inspirational people in May, inspirational poems in June, inspirational stories in July, and inspirational quotes in August. Baker s Bunch Donna Collins 1 st Thursday at 2:15pm AL-B Almost everyone has a background in baking. Whether it was just something you tried once in a while for fun, something you enjoy watching on television or a professional practice. Just because there may no longer be a household to bake for does not mean it can t just be something fun to delve into. Join Donna in this course and either learn or remember the basics of baking. Make some classic treats along with some you might not have heard of before. At the very least you will be able to sample something delicious! Ballroom Dancing Gene LaPierre 4 th Monday at 1:30pm IL-BC Dancing, like its partner music, is something that is known universally. We may not all practice or perceive it in the same way, but people throughout the entire world take part in their own version of this physical endeavor. This makes it not only a physical experience but a cultural one as well. Gene LaPierre will be traveling away from his studio to Woodbury Mews, and continuing his dance lessons with us this summer semester. So, whether you love to Waltz or prefer to spice it up with a Salsa, Gene will be here to provide you with all the moves and guidance you ll need. Barbara Streisand Tribute Kelly Thompson July 20 th at 1:00pm IL-3 This is a presentation you won t want to miss! Kelly, from our business office, will be showcasing the life and work of another world renowned celebrity. Last semester she brought rock and roll to the Town Center with Elvis Presley. This semester, by resident request, she will have us all singing along to theater and cabaret tunes with Barbra Streisand. Kelly will follow her discussion up with a special showing of A Star is Born one of Barbra s most popular musicals. Birthday Card Art Lucy Savarese June 7 th at 2:00pm IL-C This course is an installment of our monthly art lesson with Lucy. This month students will learn to draw a cake. This cake will be a tool that allows you to use shading to show volume. These drawings will be done on an actual blank greeting card complete with an envelope. You can personalize your card when finished with individual details for an extra special birthday wish to a loved one. Brain Benefits Mary Ellen Quinn 2 nd Monday at 11:15am AL-2 This course will highlight some everyday practices that seem insignificant, but can take a beneficial toll on your brain. The best part about this course is that these are all entertaining practices. The first class will discuss laughter and its effects on our mental health, accompanied by some opportunities to laugh as a group. Next you will explore music and its ability to create visual imagery and induce meditation. The third class will describe how trivia exercises your recall abilities. The last class will examine foods that boost your brain along with some samples.

Brew Buddies Michael Lando May 25 th, June 23 rd, July 21 st, August 25 th at 2:00pm AL-D Watermark University is providing you with an opportunity to spend quality time with your Executive Director. What could be more enjoyable than learning to brew your own beer? Mike has decided to guide you through the process of this interesting task. This will be accomplished through the use of a brewing kit in sessions once a month. The first class will display the kit, all its contents, and a brief overview of what the process it will entail. The second class will be getting the brewing started. The third class will allow Mike to finish the brewing with you. Finally, the last class will pertain tasting the results of your work. Celebrity Bios Karen Wetzel 1 st Wednesday at 2:00pm IL-BC The life of the rich and famous has, and always will be, fascinating to those less glamourous. Stars are idolized around the world for both their good and bad qualities. This course will highlight some of our most beloved celebrities from the past. Karen will discuss what their life is or was like in the limelight, and reminisce some memories we all share from their public appearances. The four stars featured this semester are: Betty White, Ronald Reagan, Betty Davis, and Morgan Freeman. Chair Yoga Christie DiStefano Every other Monday at 1:30pm G Woodbury Mews is providing the perfect opportunity to join in the yoga craze. This meditative form of exercise is spreading across the nation and it isn t hard to see why its popularity is so infectious. The calming physical movements have been known to reduce hypertension and strengthen bones. If you haven t already partaken in this course, travel to the Garden s neighborhood every other Monday and try it for yourself. Chemistry for Dummies Joyce London 2 nd and 4 th Friday at 2:00pm IL-BC In your neighbor, and instructor s, own words, Chemistry for Dummies is a simple teaching method describing the reasons and results of atoms meeting to form the substances that are part of our everyday lives. Be sure to join in bi-weekly for this enlightening and enjoyable endeavor that will leave you all thinking you re scientists. Christo- Islands Pauline Pauline Jonas June 15 th at 2:00pm IL-3 June 16 th at 2:00pm AL-2 This course is an installment of our monthly Art and Culture visit from Pauline. From raucous public debates to off-the record discussions, you see seven years of this artist at work, including: probing, politicking, and debating the meaning of art. You are rewarded with his completed work: Islands wrapped in floating pink fabric. Color Value Landscape Lucy Savarese July 5 th at 2:00pm IL-C This course is an installment of our monthly art lesson with Lucy. This month students will mix color techniques with black and white to produce different values. This will be used to create a simple landscape that will demonstrate perspectives of distances near and far. Cook s Corner Dwan Honey 3 rd Wednesday at 2:00pm AL-2 3 rd Thursday at 2:00pm IL-BC Join your Dining Service Director and Chef, Dwan Honey, monthly for each installment of Cook's Corner. This interactive session is both instructional and empowering. During the summer semester each month he will bring you his take on three different seasonings. He will describe the different tastes they conjure and beneficial pairings. The class members will test the spices by sampling them throughout the lesson. Also, remember that Dwan welcomes any suggestions, comments or concerns you may have about your dining experiences in the community during this time.

Culinary Creations Carley Strock Every Monday except 2 nd Monday at 10:30am G Culinary Creations is a brand new addition to Watermark University. Join us every Monday in the Gardens as we take on a new recipe. Residents interact with staff to share in the aromatic and creative process of producing each dish. Though there may no longer be a need to cook in your everyday life here at Woodbury Mews, this learning experience will seek to fulfill the possible desire to re-engage in a culinary endeavor. Each course will be followed by a panel review that afternoon. During this review all are welcome to attend and taste the results of our hard work. The tasting will be followed by a discussion of the quality of the dish and whether it is recommendable. Erika s Quilters Erika Welch Every Tuesday at 2:00pm G The residents in the Gardens community have taken on a new project that has become a Watermark University course of its own. Lead by your Naya Erika, residents have begun to formulate a quilt. They aid in the process of putting the many patches together as Erika works her very own sewing machine that she brings into the community just for this purpose. Residents have a chance to help in the creation of something while learning exactly what it entails to make a quilt. Every Wednesday at 1:00pm IL-3 Fit for Life Lois Viola 2 nd Wednesday at 2:30pm AL-3 2 nd Monday at 10:30am G This exercise program is refreshingly different from the ordinary half hour of sweat and toil that most of us force ourselves to endure. This unique approach to fitness makes working out seem less like a chore and more like fun. Lois is able to thrive in her everyday life by visualizing health and wellbeing as something enjoyable, as well as necessary. She uses high energy music from various eras to predict the flow of her routines. This creates a special spontaneity to her instruction, producing a course that is beneficial while also leaving plenty of room for amusement. Gardening Mary Ellen Quinn 3 rd Tuesday at 2:00pm AL-3 Donna Collins 2 nd Thursday at 2:00pm AL-D Watermark wants to invite all its green thumbs to join in while the weather permits this semester as we endeavor to build up the community garden areas, as well as take on some indoor gardening projects. You will begin with the deck attached to the dining room. This will be supplied with railing planters to start off some flowers and vegetables. Then as the landscaping becomes underway you will progress to maintaining a larger vegetable garden on the property. These vegetables will be used in the preparation of meals by our dining room. Mary Ellen Quinn will be taking on a few indoor projects that allow you to begin some of your plantings from a bag and transplant them elsewhere when ready. History of Our Travels Len and Ginny Grant June 3 rd at 2:00pm IL-BC Your neighbors from the Town Center, Len and Ginny Grant, will conclude their cultural documentaries with the details of their trip to Asia. Relive their journey from Singapore to Thailand then China. Explore the atmosphere of Bangkok and Hong Kong, as seen through the eyes of your peers. Allow them to widen your view to a place that you may never have thought about experiencing before. While learning about these places and people you may in turn learn more about two of your friends. Hollywood Headliners Carley Strock Every other Wednesday at 11:00am G Gossip may be a practice that is frowned upon, but it is also one that is carried throughout the world and history. People often find entertainment in discussing the dirt, so to speak, of others. One of the most popular topics of everyday discussion is celebrity scandals. As long as there are celebrities, there will be

scandals and the public loves to get the scoop. This course travels through time and revisits some of the most popular celebrity disaster stories. The paparazzi has never been so popular as when they brought us these nuggets secrecy. Honey Pot Club Dwan Honey May 31 st and July 26 th at 2:00pm IL-BC This course, formerly known as Pastry Art, is new and improved this semester. When Chef Dwan Honey, the Dining Services Director here at Woodbury Mews, sat down to think of the projects he would bring to Watermark University this summer he came to the conclusion that his course should not be limited to just pastry art. Dwan believes that any dish has the potential to take on a form of art, and he would love to share this process with you. Homemade ambrosia will be the task for the first edition in May, followed by parfait towers for the second edition in July. Honoring our Heroes Mary Ellen Quinn May 30 th, June 14 th, July 4 th at 2:00pm AL-L The summer semester brings some of the best opportunities to honor those who have served our country valiantly. This course will take place on each of the three major holidays: Memorial Day, Flag Day and Independence Day. The course will include a history of these holidays as well as some of the people who have made significant impact on our country. You will be able to share your own personal stories if you have any and hear others from your peers. Feel free to bring down any memorabilia from your service that you are willing to share with the group. In the Footsteps of Van Gogh Pauline Jonas May 18 th at 2:00pm IL-3 May 19 th at 2:00pm AL-2 This course is an installment of our monthly Art and Culture visit from Pauline. This documentary traces the events of Van Gogh's final years and reveals his turbulent spirit. It is ablaze with the canvases he painted between 1888 and 1890, and draws on his prolific correspondence with his brother, Theo. In a vivid combination of Vincent's words and images, and with stunning location footage, it brings to life his time in Arles; the period he spent in the asylum at Saint-Remy de Provence; and his last weeks in Auvers-sur-Oise. Literary Enrichment Carley Strock Every Friday at 3:30pm G The significance literature plays on a person's life varies from one individual to another. However, most of us can agree that we have learned many lessons in life through stories we were told over the years. Stories come in many forms and can broaden our world and perspectives. They can link us across nations and even time. They retain the ability to teach about morals, love, hardship, and much more. At Woodbury Mews many of us participate every Friday evening at 3:30pm in the telling of a short story followed by a discussion. Whether you believe in the power of the written word or not, you can still join us for an entertaining story telling. Music Therapy Ben Vukicevich May 25 th at 6:00pm G May 21 st at 1:00pm It has been said that music is a language universally known and it has the power to bring us together. That is exactly what happens when our music therapist Ben visits the community. This course allows for neighbors to travel into the Gardens community and interact with the individuals residing in memory care. Everyone has a chance to enjoy themselves as Ben guides us through an interactive session involving handheld instruments for the audience and singing. Petal Designs Lucy Savarese May 3 rd at 2:00pm IL-C This course is an installment of our monthly art lesson with Lucy. This month students will complete their petal design that they began in April. This design combines smooth swirling lines with abundant petal shapes

to create a continuous enticing display. You will consider the design elements of unity, balance, repetition, and color to create a pleasing finished product. For those just beginning today, a smaller, simpler piece can be made. Postcard Travels Donna Collins Every Tuesday at 3:00pm G Postcards, like stamps, are one of the most versatile products in history. Their general usage being an aesthetic form of postage is practiced by tourists all over the world and has evolved into many different practices. They are collectibles for some and hold memories for many. No matter the way they are utilized it always remains that they are a pleasing to the eye, they spark interest, and entice conversation and reminiscence. In this course we use postcards to metaphorically travel to different locations. While sharing in the visuals, Donna tells us a little about the location and may even share a story from this origin. Pottery Line Design Lucy Savarese August 2 nd at 2:00pm IL-C This course is an installment of our monthly art lesson with Lucy. This month students will explore different varieties that are possible from simple line decorations. This has been a style of ornamentation for thousands of years in many cultures. Using a selection of drawing materials we will decorate and add shading to our paper pot form. Sewing Club Donna Collins Every Thursday except 3 rd Thursday at 1:00pm AL-3 Needle and Hook as evolved during the last semester into a full force of ladies working hard for a great cause. The sewing club has become an advocate for the animals at our local shelter. These women have hand sewn blankets to line the floors of the cages and provide comfort to these less fortunate animals. They also create a vast array of toys for the animals by stuffing and sewing socks. Please feel free to attend and help us with these donations. In addition to this, remember that this club is also an opportunity for anyone who is willing or able to knit or crochet to join in the fun. If you have no experience with sewing, crocheting, or knitting your instructor Donna will be more than willing to teach you these skills. Sign Language Donna Collins 3 rd Thursday at 1:30pm AL-2 Learning different languages has always been a point of interest for individuals. It is a practice that can be both exciting and informative. Language separates us, but it does not have to. This is no different for sign language. Many people speak with their hands without even knowing it. They offer certain physical gestures and expressions to go along with everything they state from their mouths instinctively. Those without prominent hearing abilities just do this in a much more organized and effective way, which we call sign language. This semester Donna will focus on finalizing our understanding of the alphabet and progress to simple word signs. Tai Chi Gerri Medoff 2 nd Tuesday at 1:00pm IL-3 Watermark University at Woodbury Mews is delighted to announce that our Tai Chi instructor Gerri Medoff will be continuing her class for the summer semester! Whether you are a frequent student or thinking about participating for the first time, this class is for you. Tai Chi is a great fit for anyone and everyone. In this course you will follow Gerri s lead, learning some of the fundamental moves of this martial art. This physical act has meditative qualities which benefit both the body and mind. The practice has even been found to improve fall prevention due to its ability to strengthen balance. The Hudson River and Its Painters Pauline Jonas July 12 th at 2:00pm AL-2 July 13 th at 2:00pm IL-3 This course is an installment of our monthly Art and Culture visit from Pauline. This Metropolitan Museum of Art video allows you see the beauty of this mid-nineteenth century art movement. You will view about 200

images from artists of this beautiful school of paintings. Among them are Thomas Cole, Durand, Church and more. The Impressionists: Monet Pauline Jonas August 16 th at 2:00pm IL-3 August 17 th at 2:00pm AL-2 This course is an installment of our monthly Art and Culture visit from Pauline. This Kultur video features footage of Monet's house, gardens at Giverny, and L'Orangerie. There is also a special film shot at London's Savoy Hotel, from where Monet painted his famous views of London. Wine Pairings Vicki Pine Last Thursday at 4:00pm IL-BC When you think of wine, many times cheese goes along with it. However, there are many different treats that accent the consumption of this alcoholic beverage. This semester you will be introduced to the fruits that pair the best with wine. You will discover which wine they pair with the best as well as why they do. There will be an opportunity to taste a pairing with this fruit following the information. The fruits we will look at this summer include: apricot, plum, black cherry, and cranberry.
