2 ANNUAL REPORT & FINANCES 2016 CONTENTS WORKING WITH THE COMMUNITIES > Bena Jema > Santa Clara > Paoyhan PROGRAMS & ACHIEVEMENTS: 2016 HIGHLIGHTS > Regenerative Solutions > Intercultural Education > Eco-social Justice > Volunteers & Research > 2016 General Highlights MESSAGES FROM THE ALIANZA ARKANA FAMILY FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 2016 > Expenses > Income ACKNOWLEDGING OUR SUPPORTERS > Foundations & Grant Givers > Individual Donors BENA JEMA Bena Jema, which means new community in the Shipibo language, was one of the first primarily Shipibo urban settlements with more than 180 families. Alianza Arkana has been working with this community since SANTA CLARA Santa Clara is a small semi-rural community of about forty families (270 inhabitants), about fifty minutes by car in the dry season from Pucallpa. Alianza Arkana had been working with this community since Santa Clara has an autonomous administration and its main economic activities are agriculture, fishing and craft. PAOYHAN Paoyhan is a Shipibo community of 1,000 habitants. It is situated at about a five-hour boat ride from Pucallpa. The meaning of Paoyhan in Shipibo is divided in two parts: pao which means pearl and ian which translates to lagoon. WORKING WITH THE COMMUNITIES Forming alliances and building partnerships with Shipibo communities is the heart and soul of our work. Here we share a snapshot of the work carried out in 2016 in partnership with some of our closest allies. We have had the pleasure and privilege to work with the following communities in a variety of projects and workshops concerning female empowerment, permaculture, health, eco-sanitation, videoediting skills and much more!
3 ANNUAL REPORT & FINANCES 2016 PROGRAMS & ACHIEVMENTS: 2016 HIGHLIGHTS REGENERATIVE SOLUTIONS An example of the compost bathrooms created Alianza Arkana, in collaboration with UNICEF, supported the construction of organic, dry, double-vaulted, compost bathrooms in the Municipality of Indiana (Loreto). As a result, the Municipality of Indiana received the National Environmental Prize in December Our two-women wandering clinic Marcos Urquia Director of Permaculture Alianza Arkana worked in collaboration with the community of Santa Clara to further develop the permaculture project which was initiated two years ago. Two additional hectares were planted this year, consisting of medicinal plants (including a walkaway of 75 medicinal plants) and wood used for artisanal handcrafts. The aim of this permaculture site is three-fold: to aid in the reforestation of the area, to provide food security for the community and to revalorize the Shipibo culture. In terms of food security, this permaculture site allows for the production of one healthy meal a week for the children of the community. Working with the children of the communities Our two women wandering clinic has again achieved positive results in the communities of Bena Jema and Jhon Hocking. The cooperation of Nine Uhlich, a midwife and homeopath, and Carolina Mahua Nunta, a Shipibo woman expert in traditional plant medicine, has reached around 200 people per community for free. This project shows great potential for coming years! INTERCULTURAL EDUCATION Involving the children in the cooking process
4 ANNUAL REPORT & FINANCES 2016 One of the biggest problem in the region concerning children is the lack of a balanced diet. Mainly because of financial issues, vegetables are difficult to include in everyday meals. For this reason, two volunteers from Alianza Arkana, in collaboration with local teachers and some students, decided to offer a balanced meal for every class room once to twice a week. As a result, the children were not only better informed about the importance of a healthy diet, they were also able to concentrate better in class. space in which mothers could share their testimonies of how they had become mothers often unaware that sex would lead to pregnancy. During this session, some mothers shared that due to unwanted pregnancies they were unable to pursue their dreams. The sharing of these stories had several important ripple effects. Firstly, it allowed the mothers, who had often suppressed the violence and hurt they had experienced in regards to sexual intercourse, to finally release all these emotions. Secondly, the girls awareness of their own sexual agency and the responsibilities attached to motherhood increased. Stemming from this sharing, several discussions were held relating to puberty, the importance of contraception and protection against STDs. Admiring the work accomplished Alianza Arkana also held photography workshops for the youth of Bena Jema. Through these workshops, the children were able to rediscover their environment and surroundings through a new lens - so to speak. The youth were also able to express the dreams they had for themselves and their surroundings. These workshops were carried out in the spirit of communal sharing as each group of five was given one camera. Motherhood as a choice Alianza Arkana carried out a workshop with the women and young girls of Paoyhan in July entitled: Motherhood as a Choice. This workshop session of five days created a safe Intergenerational learning We have held several workshops in Paoyhan on female empowerment and sexual health. Nevertheless, we kept receiving recurring feedback from the attendees as to how their mothers and grandmothers had clashing views. Thus, the aim of this November sessions was to create another intergenerational safe space in which topics such as self-esteem, sexual health and violence could be explored. The task of bringing the materials (e.g. food and workshop materials) was shared between Alianza Arkana and the women of the community. This weekend-long workshop marked an important stepping stone in empowering the women of Paoyhan to be more confident and self-sufficient.
5 ANNUAL REPORT & FINANCES 2016 and two groups of twenty-five people from the Universeum of Gothenburg. A collaborative spirit In February, Alianza Arkana hosted a twoday course on how to animate objects, collages and drawings using stop motion. The idea was to create animations which reflect the way of life and preoccupations of the young people of Bena Jema. For example, some animations related to the means of revenue for the community, while others related to the normalized form of sexual harassment women in Peru experience on the street. The refurbishing of the Maloka inspired the formation of The Youth Association of Santa Clara. Alianza Arkana will continue to support this Youth Association by providing them with training in the areas of leadership, personal development, administration, computer skills and marketing. We will also be providing them with English classes. The association has evoked their interest to engage in ecotourism, to continue with the permaculture project and to relaunch the traditional Ani Xeati (annual festival). Wallet making print Refurbished Maloka Our ecotourism program in Santa Clara consists in developing areas which make the community more attractive for visitors. An abandoned Maloka (a traditional ceremonial building) was refurbished, creating a cultural centre within the community. In addition, Alianza Arkana and the community of Santa Clara built a market area for handcrafts. In a few months, the community hosted various visitors including: a group from the International Funding for Indigenous Projects, a group of people from Arkana Peru, three Primary school teachers from Sweden, a group of fifteen teenagers from Norway Rap as a tool for change Edu and Punko, two successful rappers and former members of the iconic hip hop group Comité Pokofló visited the communities of San Fransisco and Santa Clara. They offered two workshops: one on wallet-making using recycled materials, and another on the lyrical composition of rap music. This workshop motivated many young people to revalorize the Shipibo language through rap. The seed has been planted.
6 ANNUAL REPORT & FINANCES 2016 Intergenerational learning Collaboration and empowerment In the month of November twenty Shipibo girls from different communities, from Nuevo Palestina, Nuevo Bretaña, Aguas Negras, Santa Rosita and Betel, participated in a workshop which took place at the school of Santa Rosita. Various topics (including leadership, self-esteem, gender dynamics, violence against women, cultural identity, nutrition, plant medicine, environmental issues and reproductive health) were explored through a mixture of practical and physical activities, presentations, theatre and art. Maestra Anita, a local elder, was also invited to teach the girls about the function and importance of several local medicinal plants - this knowledge is a core pillar of Shipibo culture. Further, we have begun the research and preparatory work to create our first English/ Shipibo/ Spanish dictionary. Jeiser Suarez, president of the Language Allies and Project Partners at AILDI (the American Indian Language Development Institute), and Shipibo professor Eli Sanchez will be helping to support our work. The Spirit of Plants by Lastenia Canayo In collaboration with the AIDI, Asociacion Indigena para el Desarollo Integral, we started researching the 30 medicinal plants for our children s book on the spirits of plants. The aim of this book is to help children reconnect with their culture and the Shipibo peoples ancestral knowledge of plants. Further, this book will be written in Shipibo, Spanish and English in order to share the Shipibo cosmovision with the outside world. A special thanks to Lastenia Canayo, the artist, the Shibipo Conibo Centre in New York, which will help to publish the book as well as Amanda Rubin for her wholehearted support. ECOSOCIAL JUSTICE Oil palm plantation workers during a government investigation of Plantaciones de Pucallpa in May 2016 (Credit: T. Younger) This year, Alianza Arkana began working with the Shipibo communities on our ecosocial justice program. Notably, we gave our support to the community of Santa Clara de Uchunya and the local indigenous federation FECONAU to combat the deforestation and human rights abuses caused by the exploitations of palm oil in their ancestral territories.
7 ANNUAL REPORT & FINANCES 2016 VOLUNTEERS & RESEARCH We have been working with an international group of volunteers from Peru, Portugal, Sweden, Ecuador, Germany, USA, Holland, Spain, Italy, Norway, UK, Mexico, and Switzerland. Our work would not be possible without the talent and commitment of all these people. We have worked hard this year to improve our home/office (by repairing the roof and expanding our permaculture garden) in order to make it all the more comfortable for our volunteers. This year we have worked with researchers at Masters and Doctoral level from the universities of Yale, Sussex, Oslo and Stockholm on a multitude of research reports. The topics explored included: the role of ayahuasca tourism in helping to preserve the health of the Amazonian rainforest. Further, Dr Paul Roberts, Director of Intercultural Education at Alianza Arkana, and Laura Dev, PhD student at the University of Berkeley, co-wrote a report commissioned by the Roffey Park Management Institute. The report, entitled Learning from the Peruvian Amazon, is based on the interviews of thirteen Shipibo healers on how they acquired their knowledge GENERAL HIGHLIGHTS We are an increasingly intercultural and non-hierarchical organization. The concept of non-hierarchy implies that all those involved in the Alianza Arkana organisation, whether it be paid employees, volunteers or partners, are encouraged to take initiative and to take on a leadership role in regards to their work. This philosophy corresponds to our relationship with the Shipibo people: which is that of reciprocity. Further, it helps us cultivate a working atmosphere of creativity, adaptability and dedication. In the hopes of increasingly integrating Shipibo people in the internal structure of Alianza Arkana, two of the four Directors at Alianza Arkana as well as three of our nine key advisors are Shipibo. We have also taken in our first young Shipibo apprentice, Jane Shirley Mori Cairuna. She will be trained to assume a paid role with Alianza Arkana to work in the areas of Ecosocial Justice and the empowerment of young girls. Further, we are continuing to support a group of six Shipibo students at universities in Pucallpa with full scholarships worth $1000 USD a year. Additionally, we supporting a further four Shipibo students by paying their university fees and giving them classes in English and computer skills. MESSAGES FROM THE ALIANZA ARKANA FAMILY Here at Alianza Arkana we work and live together in community. At its heart, Alianza Arkana is a non-hierarchical organization, meaning that no one is more or less important than anyone else, no one is someone else s boss and we all have our responsibilities. That makes for a very dynamic, creative, interesting and sometimes challenging environment. It means navigating a space where a lot of things come together, personal processes and experiences, setting and respecting of boundaries, challenges related to the intercultural nature of our work. It is a confusing space sometimes. Instead of suppressing this confusion, steering clear of this challenge, we work with it. Michael Beljaars Volunteer and Maestro de Casa
