2 ANNUAL REPORT & FINANCES 2017 CONTENTS WORKING WITH THE COMMUNITIES > Bena Jema > Santa Clara > Paoyhan > Nueva Saposoa > Nueva Betania PROGRAMS & ACHIEVEMENTS: 2017 HIGHLIGHTS > Regenerative Solutions > Intercultural Education > Eco-social Justice > Volunteers & Research > 2017 General Highlights MESSAGES FROM THE ALIANZA ARKANA FAMILY FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 2017 > Expenses > Income BENA JEMA Bena Jema, which means new community in the Shipibo language, was one of the first primarily Shipibo urban settlements with more than 180 families. Alianza Arkana has been working with this community since SANTA CLARA Santa Clara is a small semi-rural community of about forty families (270 inhabitants), about fifty minutes by car in the dry season from Pucallpa. Alianza Arkana had been working with this community since Santa Clara has an autonomous administration and its main economic activities are agriculture, fishing and craft. PAOYHAN Paoyhan is a Shipibo community of 1,000 habitants. It is situated at about a five-hour boat ride from Pucallpa. The meaning of Paoyhan in Shipibo is divided in two parts: pao which means pearl and ian which translates to lagoon. ACKNOWLEDGING OUR SUPPORTERS > Foundations & Grant Givers > Individual Donors WORKING WITH THE COMMUNITIES Forming alliances and building partnerships with Shipibo communities is the heart and soul of our work. Here we share a snapshot of the work carried out in 2017 in partnership with some of our closest allies. NUEVA SAPOSOA We started working with the community of Nueva Saposoa in This year we helped them to classify their forest as a touristic site and bring electricity to their community. NUEVA BETANIA Our work in Nueva Betania began towards the end of Through our partnership with UNICEF, we were able to equip the communities with compost toilets in order to improve health and sanitation. We have had the pleasure and privilege to work with the following communities in a variety of projects and workshops concerning female empowerment, permaculture, health, eco-sanitation, video-editing skills and much more!

3 ANNUAL REPORT & FINANCES 2017 PROGRAMS & ACHIEVMENTS: 2017 HIGHLIGHTS REGENERATIVE SOLUTIONS Harvesting the results of the Grow and Cook Project Alianza Arkana worked in collaboration with the community of Santa Clara to add another hectare to the six-hectare permaculture project (initiated three years ago). This project is directly linked to the Grow and Cook Project - which intends to produce a more wholesome meal for every child. While Alianza Arkana initiated the project, the communities later took over the managing role. This permaculture garden enabled the school to produce their own food supplies and to involve the children in the planting process. Thus, the children learned interactively about the medicinal plants, as well as the fruit and vegetables planted. Group planning sessions We worked with the newly formed youth association of Santa Clara on project design, planning and development. A workshop was held during which the volunteers and the youth discussed the community s needs, as well as ideas for revenue diversification and community-based projects. Alianza Arkana helped the association to obtain a grant for reforestation and for cultural revitalization projects (relating to traditional songs and dances). Working with the forest Alianza Arkana collaborated with the community of Nueva Saposoa to protect the community s forest, against the expansion of palm oil exploitation, by classifying the forest as a touristic site. Alianza Arkana also collaborated with the community to install solar panels on the roofs of the houses of the community. An example of the type of compost bathrooms created In collaboration with UNICEF we were able to continue our eco-sanitation project. We were able to create organic, dry, double-vaulted, compost bathrooms for every family in the community of Nueva Betania.

4 ANNUAL REPORT & FINANCES 2017 Workshops for the whole community Alianza Arkana held a workshop in Paoyhan on locally addressing climate change through permaculture. The workshop addressed the effects of climate change which the community had experienced over the past decades, such as the increase in flooding and the erosion of river banks. The workshop also addressed the effects of climate change on a global scale and the role of the Amazon Rainforest in regulating the climate. In the second half of the workshop, Marcos Urquia, Alianza Arkana s Director of Permaculture, spoke about the permaculture project of Santa Clara and the economic and educational benefits which it had generated. This inspired the community of Paoyhan to start planning the inauguration of their own permaculture garden. INTERCULTURAL EDUCATION pleasure of hosting a five-day personal development workshops in the Tierra Vida Centre. These workshops were led by Silveria Pino Canayo (an indigenous nurse and member of the Local Health Authority) and Amelia Pandura (a very experienced plant spirit Shaman). Together they gave the girls an intercultural vision of the means available to them in regards to sexual hygiene and contraception. One of the striking aspects of these workshops is that two young mothers attended this being especially important considering the high rate of teenage pregnancies in the communities. Sowing reusable menstrual pads Intergenerational learning This year marked the fifth year of working with the Shipibo women of Santa Clara and Bena Jema on female empowerment and sexual health. In collaboration with the NGO Girls for the World, Alianza Arkana had the Building confidence and trust The workshop which took place in August for the Shipibo women of Paoyhan, included different games, movies and activities related to sexual health and emotional awareness. Notably, in regards to sexual health the women were educated on the avoidance of STDs and the maintenance of sexual hygiene. The workshops were a great success and included 20 interested participants of different ages from the community.

5 ANNUAL REPORT & FINANCES 2017 Our Hip Hop(e) Group Together with the Youth of Santa Clara and the Colectivo Amatska, the purpose of this Workshop was to use Hip Hop as an educative tool for social transformation. This activity offered a reinterpretation of intercultural dialogue, through which the Shipibo culture can be revitalized. Children drawing deforestation and illegal logging Additionally, we partnered with UNICEF in organizing a workshop in November in the Shipibo community of Nueva Betania. Together with the local youth we held various activities related to music and art. The young people reflected about deforestation, climate change and pollution through sketches. We also gave them the opportunity to try different musical instruments, such as quenas, guitars, charangos, horns and flutes. These activities were warmly welcomed by the community. Further, they strengthened our vision of integrating more art and music into our work. ECOSOCIAL JUSTICE Carolina sorting medicinal plants The two-women wandering clinic is a twoyear old Alianza Arkana initiative led by Nine Uhlich, a German homeopath, and Carolina Mahua Nunta, a Shipibo woman specialised in traditional plant medicine. Together they were able to reach 95 patients in the community of Paoyhan and 120 patients in the communities of Santa Clara and Bena Jema. They were also able to reach 1,300 people throughout the three communities to treat them against parasites. Furthermore, we are grateful to have started receiving funds from the Endangered Languages Fund to start writing our Shipibo/Spanish/English dictionary. Video editing workshop Alianza Arkana hosted a video-editing workshop with the REDCIP, Red de Comunicadores Indígenas de Peru, and the FECONAU, Federation del Rio Ucayali y Afluentes - two local indigenous political organisations. We helped these youth organisations to edit their footage of the Indigenous Rights March, which took place on the 5 th of June in Pucallpa.

6 ANNUAL REPORT & FINANCES GENERAL HIGHLIGHTS We have also started sharing our office space with a new indigenous NGO called ARIAP (Asociación de Raices Indígenas de la Amazonia Peruana). Together we are developing a language revitalization program by hosting a radio in the Shipibo language. Workshops in the Nueva Saposoa community Alianza Arkana, with the youth from Santa Clara, carried out workshops in the community of Nueva Saposoa. These workshops revolved around building trust within the youth of the community and between the youth and Alianza Arkana. Notably, the exercises included carrying out mirror exercises. The youth were also encouraged to share their dreams for themselves and their community. VOLUNTEERS & RESEARCH Alianza Arkana had the pleasure to work with researchers from Yale University and Stockholm University. Their research revolved around palm oil and climate change. Our volunteers this year came from various countries such as the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Ecuador, the Netherlands, Turkey, Venezuela, Estonia, Switzerland, Greece and Israel. MESSAGES FROM THE ALIANZA ARKANA FAMILY The Sami have 108 different words for snow. The Tuareg have 7 different words for sand. Peruvian Law has six different names for forests, and none for ancestral territory; the Shipibo language has no word for private property. This conflict begs the age-old question: if one has no name for something, can it actually exist? Sarah Sax Researcher, Graduate of Yale University with a master s in Environmental Science What we are doing at Alianza Arkana can be best described in terms of craft in the sense of the skilled, disciplined, intuitive, shaping and cultivating of an organization and its culture. The analogy here is of creating an organizational fabric (culture/ structure/ processes/ strategy) that is deeply and tightly but also flexibly and beautifully woven together, and which draws together the multiple, everincreasing and evolving strands involved in our work. These multiple strands are both important themes such as indigenous rights, our relationship with Mother Nature, cultural differences, colonial history, power relationships etc. and also all the different individuals and organizations that contribute to and support our work and the Shipibo organizations and communities we partner with. In Loving Memory of Paul Roberts
