Generally this will be your least expensive alternative. You may also order books via Internet, and prices vary considerably by vendor. Used books can be had at and other sources. Some packet materials will also be available there. A certain number of articles will be on the class web site and/or JSTOR. The academic objective of this course is to explore the political and social organization of the Middle East with an aim to understanding the material underpinnings of seemingly irrational tendencies. In order to disentangle the dynamics of tribal politics from Islam and other cultural practices, we will spend a week on the dynamics of warfare between European settlers and the Native American Indian tribes of the colonial period. This is to provide us with an objective model of the tactics and patterns of tribal warfare before we explore similar patterns in the Middle East. This course will have a moderate focus on the Arab-Israeli conflict but the main concerns will be elsewhere. Course grading: The course grade will be based on two midterms (nominally 30% of the grade each) and one final (nominally 40% of the grade plus adjustments due to attendance (see below) and subjective appreciation of such factors as class participation. Absenteeism is handled in the following way: perfect attendance, 10% added to course GPA. One week, no grade penalties. Two weeks, 30% grade penalty (An A grade would fall to a B-). Three weeks, 50% penalty (An A grade falls to a C). More than three weeks of absences and you fail regardless of class performance. Severe problems documented by the proper authorities (medical or counseling services) will not incur a penalty, but after three weeks absences, for whatever reason, you must drop the class (with my support, no penalty on your gpa). This applies to deaths among family or friends, broken bones, other diseases you or those close to you may suffer, vehicle failure, winter storms that do not close the university, severe psychological stresses including broken hearts and unreasonable demands from parents, crimes, automobile accidents, financial crises, skiing or snowboard accidents, and the demands of your employers. Your attendance is measured by your signing of the attendance sheet so make sure you don t forget and make sure you sign your name the same way each time. I do not audit notes or otherwise certify your attendance if you neglect the essential course requirement of signing the attendance sheet. You have a keen and specific interest in keeping your no penalty 1
