3 Leadership Council Communiqué Linda Weston Leadership Council President Dear Friends, I want to dive right in and tell you about the wonderful combined retreat the Leadership Council, practitioners, and music director had on July 14. Rev. Peggy Farris practitioner, frequent Sunday speaker, and all-around lovely person opened her Norman art gallery, Whispering Willows, to us, so we had a lovely venue for our work. To prepare for our day's work, we did some "brain balancing": Tammy Tittle played some upbeat music for us as we moved opposite sides of our bodies touching the right hand to the left knee, for example. It felt at first like trying to pat your head and rub your tummy at the same time! But the halves of the brain do come together to coordinate, and soon we were hamming it up and having a great time. We began our retreat agenda with a visioning exercise where we contemplated the following questions: What does God want for our Center? What does that look like? What do we need to make those things happen? What must we release? From contemplating what God wants for our Center and what that looks like, we affirmed the closeness we feel when we come together. We want United Life to be a spiritual hub where people feel safe, supported, and inspired; where trust is given, and there s no judgment or fear. We also want our Center to be a place that draws out people s talents. There were a number of things we talked about to bring those visions to fruition. One thing we felt very strongly about is that we want to have more classes and book studies. It s very important for people new to Science of Mind to start learning about it right away; and for established members, it deepens both our knowledge and our connections with one another. We also talked about things we could do to enrich our Sunday services. We want to make sure that our visitors are acknowledged and welcomed in a comfortable way; that the role and availability of practitioners is highlighted; and that we explain why we do and say what we do. (To that end, you may have noticed that Rev. Peggy, at our July 15 service, explained why the spiritual mind treatment is done in the first person.) Another thing we felt we need to improve is communication to be the spiritual beacon we want to be for the community, we have to get the word out that we're here and that we have a lot to offer, in terms of both our teachings and events. We want to have a better Internet presence, which involves keeping our website updated and creating an official Facebook page. Last, we want to have more frequent congregational meetings to share updates and facilitate true two-way conversation. Speaking of conversation, we also realized that our speech often conveys an affirmation of lack, and that we may not even be aware of it. As leaders, we are particularly sensitive to the need for our language to affirm truth rather than appearances. We pledge to be more mindful of the words we choose. Next, we did a fascinating forgiveness exercise: 3. What do I like about ULCSL now? 1. Recall an experience or judgment related to 4. What do I ask of ULCSL? What do I ask ULCSL and the ULCSL that made me feel Universe for? Anger Fear 5. What is my deep desire for ULCSL? How am I helping to Hurt achieve it? Sadness 6. What am I grateful for? 2. 4 From The Desk of Dr. SuZ The Magic Bank Account Imagine that you had won the following *PRIZE* in a contest: Each morning your bank would deposit $86,400 in your private account for your personal use. Author not known. This was found in the billfold of Paul Bear Bryant, legendary Alabama football coach, after he died in However, this prize has rules. The set of rules are as follow: 1. Everything that you don t spend each day will be taken away from you. 2. You may not simply transfer money into some other account. 3. You may only spend it. 4. Each morning, upon awakening, the bank opens your account with another $86,400 for the new day. 5. The bank can end the game without warning; at any time it can say, Game Over! It can close the account and you will not receive a new one. What would you personally do with your prize? You would buy anything and everything you wanted right? Not only for yourself, but for all the people you love and care for. Even for people you don t know, because you couldn t possibly spend it all on yourself, right? You would try to spend every penny, and use it all, because you knew money would be replenished in the morning, right? Actually, THIS GAME IS REAL. Shocked? Yes! Each of us is already a winner of a much more valuable *PRIZE*. We just don t seem to realize it. The prize is *TIME*. 1. Each morning we awaken to receive 86,400 seconds as a gift of life. 2. And when we go to sleep at night, any remaining time is NOT credited to us. 3. What we haven t used up that day is forever lost. 4. Yesterday is forever gone. 5. Each morning the account is refilled, but the bank can dissolve your account at any time WITHOUT WARNING. So, WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH YOUR 86,400 seconds today? Those seconds are worth much, much more than the same amount in dollars. Think about it and remember to enjoy every second of your life, because time races by much quicker than you think. 5 BECOMING SUPERNATURAL By Dorothy Danen, RScP For the last two years I have had reason to go to a town an hour s drive away nearly every week. When I started driving this distance it seemed to take forever to get to my destination, and the same for the drive back home again. Now, after making the trip so many times, it seems that it is Tammy Tittle, RScP going faster each time. In place of sighing and thinking I still have so far to go, I m thinking that I m already passing this exit and then the next, then the river, and soon I m at my destination. The time to drive the distance according to the clock is the same but it feels like less time. Rev Dr Peggy Farris Barbara Hartman, RScP Dorothy Danen, RScP My experience reminds me of a book I read recently, Becoming Supernatural by Dr. Joe Dispenza. In it, he points out how we often live our lives pretty much the same from day to day. We have our daily routines, whether it is going to work, caring for the kids, or doing what retired people do. According to Dr. Dispenza, after repeating the routines often enough the neural pathways are fixed in our brains; we may start to run our lives on autopilot as a result. As we do, we experience the same thoughts, the same emotions, and expect more of the same in the future. Life can be quite predictable because we are reliving the past all the time. Maybe that is why as we grow older, the days seem to go by so quickly. It s because they are so much the same. Dr. Dispenza believes there is more to life than this. He emphasized that we are more powerful than we think and that we can create the life of our dreams. We can welcome the unexpected events in our lives that bring us pleasure and excitement. His thoughts on creating are similar to those of Ernest Holmes although the methods are different. In Science of Mind, we can do treatments to create change in our lives, to heal our bodies, and to generate more joy and satisfaction. We can attend Science of Mind classes to remind us of what we already know. At United Life, the Education Committee is planning to offer classes on a regular basis throughout the year. The committee is taking suggestions on which classes to offer. Remember, the Practitioner Prayer Group is always willing and able to hold the Truth of you and support you until you feel comfortable on your own. It is possible to create the life of our dreams. Let s do it! Leadership Council Communiqué (Continued from page 3) One powerful thing I took away from this exercise was that the experiences I recalled were all in the past. I recognized that "we are small, but mighty," and the past doesn't stand in the way of achieving our desires for ULCSL now. The reflections on how we're helping achieve our desires for ULCSL were the perfect segue into our last exercise, designed to help us identify our strengths, likes, and talents. We examined experiences and goals that illustrate what we like, showcase our creativity, and demonstrate our strengths. Some things we considered: Things we accomplished that challenged us Things we enjoyed doing, where time seemed to melt away Our hobbies and likes, and what we spend our discretionary money on How we envision the future what's important to us to have in our lives and hearts, what we desire most for those we love and for ULCSL (Continued on page 6) THERE IS A LAUGHTER OF GOD - LET S LAUGH IT. Stephen G Sisco Leadership Council Communiqué (Continued from page 5) We then selected traits and activities that spoke to us from a huge list, and wrote ours on individual slips of paper. There were tons of strengths and talents for just our little group of nine! I'll put them on a poster board to share with you at a congregational meeting. We marveled that, if just nine of us could fill up a poster board, imagine all the strengths and talents we have as a congregation! Our day energized us and brought us closer as a group, and helped us clarify a vision for ULCSL that the Law already says "yes" to! My challenge to you this month: Go through these exercises for yourself, and share your results with a practitioner or Council member. Think of how you can bring our vision to reality, and do it! Last but certainly not least, on behalf of the Council and practitioners, I gratefully acknowledge how committed and involved all of you are! Nearly every member of our Center volunteers and helps out in some way. I feel so blessed to have each of you, and this community, in my life. I think I've quoted this Scripture to you before, as it's one of my favorites: "I thank my God whenever I think of you; and every time I pray for all of you, I pray with joy" (Philippians 1:3-4). I know this is a much longer message from me than usual, but I wanted to share details of this powerful retreat with you. I hope it inspires you to have an inner retreat of your own! 8 For over four years, Lani Powless has been in the Children's Area of United Life as our Nursery Worker. When she began, her mother, Tobi Halbert, supervised. Tobi, a longtime member at United Life, has worked full-time in the child development field. Beginning next month, Lani will be starting her college experience and has decided to seek other job opportunities. She will be missed for her fun and loving interactions and crafty help with the children. OPENING for PART-TIME NURSERY WORKER United Life Center for Spiritual Living 3332 N. Meridian Avenue, OKC *** Our current Nursery Worker is heading off to start college in August. *** Needed: Someone reliable: 16 years or older, experienced with children ages infant through 5th grade. Hours: 9:30-11:45 every Sunday morning with occasional extra hours during special events. Pay: $10/hour. Duties: 1. Signing families in and out 2. Interacting with the children in positive, stimulating yet firm ways 3. Any infant or toddler care such as diapering, feeding, toileting. Some wiping of toys and straightening is also required. The Nursery Worker may also work with volunteers who teach lessons or who help maintain appropriate adult/child ratios. Interested, or know someone who might be? Plan to provide a resume and references. Co-creation Workshop for United Life Community The Leadership Council is planning a co-creation workshop for our church community. The purpose of this exercise is to heal lingering hurts and envision the type of minister our Center needs. The workshop is led by a facilitator from Centers for Spiritual Living. We will have expenses to cover travel, hospitality accommodations, and cost for the workshop. These will total $2,500. To date, we have received $2,150 toward the expenses. We appeal to your generosity of spirit to help out in any way possible to bring us to our goal. As soon as we reach the full $2,500, we can receive this guidance in our path to healing.
