KATERI TEKAKWITHA The daughter of an Algonquin mother and a Mohawk chief, Kateri was born in 1656. St. Kateri Tekakwitha is the first Native American woman to be canonized. Orphaned by a smallpox outbreak, Kateri survived with severe scarring and impaired eyesight. Kateri's uncle took her in, and although she wanted to practice the religion of her mother, her uncle discouraged her. After a time, her uncle gave his permission for her to become a Christian as long as she did not leave the village. There, she put up with ridicule because of her faith. Despite tragedy, she was a devout girl at a young age, often building crosses from sticks in the woods. When she was 18, she began secret instruction in the Catholic faith with French missionaries. Her commitment to Christianity and vow of virginity was misunderstood and ridiculed by her fellow villagers. She escaped to a nearby mission, where she attended daily Mass, taught the children, and cared for the sick and the elderly. Sometimes the greatest misunderstandings can come from those closest to us. In 1676, Kateri fled to Canada where she made her First Communion on Christmas, 1677. Although the last years of her life were difficult Kateri was known for her kindness and good humor. She died on April 17, 1680, and was canonized by Pope Benedict in 2012.We were blessed to be able to honor her as our patron saint in July of 2013. Like St. Kateri, God invites us to be faithful to our commitments of faith and to always respond in love. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING FOR ST. KATERI TEKAKWITHA God, our Father, whom Kateri like to call the Great Spirit, We thank you for having given us this young woman as a model of Christian life. Despite her frailness and her community s resistance, she bore witness to the presence of Christ. With her companions she drew close to the elderly and to the sick. Everyday, she saw in nature a reflection of your own glory and beauty. Grant that by her intercession, we may always be close to you, more sensitive to the needs of those around us and more respectful of creation. With her, we shall strive to discover what pleases you and endeavor to accomplish it until that day you call us back to you. Amen! With permission of the Ordinary of St. Jean-Longueuil.
