Page Three January 22, 2017 Dear Parishioners, Tomorrow, January 23 rd, is the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), no. 373, designates January 22 nd for this particular day of prayer and penance. In all the Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 nd (or January 23 rd, when January 22 nd falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion. Yesterday, January 21 st, our own Archdiocese of Los Angeles actively and prayerfully advocated for this cause through One Life LA rally for life declaring a commitment to valuing and protecting all human life, particularly the most vulnerable in our community. Our parish was represented through our Respect Life Ministry. (Thanks to Susan Riedley, our coordinator, for her leadership.) The US Bishops (via usccb.org) present to us and make us aware: The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a throwaway culture. However, we have great trust in God s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard. In our recent electoral discernment, I do hope we had all been awakened, educated and evangelized ourselves of the big difference between the stands of the two parties (Source: votinginfo.net). The Democratic Platform: Democrats are committed to protecting and advancing reproductive health, rights, and justice. We believe unequivocally that every woman should have access to quality reproductive health care services, including safe and legal abortion regardless of where she lives, how much money she makes, or how she is insured. We believe that reproductive health is core to women s, men s, and young people s health and wellbeing. We will continue to oppose and seek to overturn federal and state laws and policies that impede a woman s access to abortion, including by repealing the Hyde Amendment. The Republican Platform: The Constitution s guarantee that no one can be deprived of life, liberty or property deliberately echoes the Declaration of Independence s proclamation that all are endowed by their Creator with the inalienable right to life. Accordingly, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment s protections apply to children before birth. As Christians, disciples of Our Lord Jesus Christ, we know very well (I hope) what Our Lord would think, say and bid us to do: I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10). If you love Me, keep My commands (John 14:15). Our Holy Father, now Blessed Pope Paul VI, wrote forty-nine years ago (in 1968) about the dire consequences of a contraceptive mentality and culture. That time, his encyclical letter Humanae Vitae (Human Life) was controversial, criticized and considered a mere religious insight. Today, his words are considered prophetic. The Pope first noted that the widespread use of contraception would lead to conjugal infidelity and the general lowering of morality. That there has been a widespread decline in morality, especially sexual morality, in the last 25 years, is very difficult to deny. The increase in the number of divorces, abortion, outof-wedlock pregnancies, and venereal diseases should convince any skeptic that sexual morality is not the strong suit of our age. (www3.nd.edu/~afreddos/ courses/264/popepaul.htm) What would happen if the Church s teaching were continually ignored? What could we still do? A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world. Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer. (Pope Saint John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae, no. 100) As disciples of Christ, we believe in the power of conversion and witness and the transformation they bring!

You will find our envelopes at the doors of the church every weekend; for quick and easy, simply write SVDP on your check. This is your chance to let your contributions help your friends and neighbors right here in Simi Valley. We really could use your financial help as well as increased man-power. This October, we will have been here 2 years. We, at present, are only tenfold. We meet twice a month - the 1st and 3rd Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm in the Parish Center. We offer a unique style of personal and spiritual assistance to help the working poor of Simi. We have assisted our friends and neighbors with rent, gasoline, utilities, eyeglasses, food, clothing, auto repairs and transportation. If we are unable to assist them, we offer referrals to various resources. This last year we were able to assist the needs of 92 people for a total of $14,671.
