ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT www.aod.org BOOK & GIFT SHOP Open weekends before & after Masses 18TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME MISSIONARY SUNDAY Fr. Kevin Scalf, C.P.P.S., will be with us this weekend to ask your support for the work of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. Each year we are given the opportunity to hear about the missionary work of the church and to support that work through our financial gifts and our prayers. The Missionaries of the Precious Blood are based in Dayton, Ohio, but they also serve the Church in Guatemala, Chile, Peru, and Colombia. We will take up a special collection at all the Masses and if you want to prepare a check to bring along, the check should be written out to St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church and marked for the missions. Please welcome Fr. Kevin with warm hospitality and respond to his message with generosity. ST. PATRICK SENIOR CENTER Dear Friends: Thank you for supporting the 31st Annual St. Patrick s Irish Festival with your donation of $125.00 for a half page ad in the Festival Book. On behalf of the seniors, staff and Board of Trustees of St. Patrick Senior Center, thank you for helping make our signature fundraiser such a success with over 2000 attendees. Your gift will make an immediate impact in the life of a senior from a nutritious home cooked meal, to a lifesaving ride to a doctor appointment, or simply the opportunity to come to the center to connect with friends. Your support helps improve the quality of life of seniors like those you cherish. Sincerely, SaTrice Coleman-Betts St. Patrick, Senior Center, Inc. ST. SEBASTIAN/ST. If you have not completed your registration froms already, please do so as soon as possible. Our program will begin on Saturday, September 8th at the 4 PM Mass. All students, parents, grandparents, teachers, classroom aides, and friends are requested to be present at the Mass and the program to follow in the parish hall. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the program or are interested in assisting with the program, please contact me at your earliest convenience. Rosaries Needed: I have received a request from two of our parishioners for rosaries. These wonderful ladies, using their own finances, send rosaries, holy cards, prayer books, religious medals and statues to third world missions in such countries as India and Africa. If you have any extra religious items in your household that you are willing to part with, please drop them off in the parish office or with one of the ushers at Mass. RCIA (Rite of Catholic Initiation of Adults Have you ever wondered what the Catholic faith was all about or why do what we do or just who are these saints that we pray to for help? In conjunction with our neighboring parishes of Sacred Heart, St. Sebastian, and St. Albert the Great, a once a week program can help you to discern if you wish to join the Catholic Church. Our program is open to those of no religious affiliation but have a curiosity of the Catholic faith and those who have been baptized in another Christian faith but feel drawn to the Catholic faith. Our Wednesday evening classes begin September 19th and run through May, 2019, and consist of prayer, sharing, community and reflection for the development of a faith and spiritual formation. Throughout the process, there is no set length of time for you to make your decision to become a Catholic nor is there any pressure. This decision is left up to the individual and must come from the depths of one s own heart and soul. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the program, please contact me at your earliest convenience. Fill the Bus! GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE August 5, 2018 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time In an on-demand society, it's not always easy to imagine life with less. The crowds of Jesus' day depended on the weather and successful growing seasons for their livelihood. For many of Jesus' listeners, even "food that perishes" would have been a welcome relief. Jesus acknowledges this but tries to draw them deeper. "You are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled." For people who have just witnessed a miracle, the response is strangely marked by ingratitude. "Jesus," they seem to say, "can't you just give us more?" How often do we behave similarly in the spiritual life? "If I only I had more patience, then I could be kind to her." "I know I'd be a better parent if I just had more time." Like the crowds, we want Jesus to give us more. Perhaps it's not "more patience" we need, but a deeper sense of our own imperfections for a greater sense of empathy. And time may limit you from family engagement, but could God be asking you to reorder your priorities entirely? After all, it wasn't more loaves that the people needed. Jesus is "the bread of life," who sustains our most essential needs. This week, are you looking for more or are you looking for God Himself?
