July 29, 2018 The Parishes of Page 1 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 29, 2018 MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia Blessed Solanus Casey O.F.M. Cap Monday is the first Memorial on the Church calendar in commemoration of the life of Blessed Solanus Casey. It is an important date in the life of the local church and we should all offer a prayer of thanksgiving for the life of Blessed Solanus in our archdiocese. If you are able to make it to mass, I would encourage you to do so. It would be even better if you could get to the Solanus Casey Center on Mt. Elliott in Detroit where he is buried and offer your prayer at his graveside, but if you are not able to do either of those things we can pray the following prayer: O God, who in your providence conformed Blessed Francis Solanus Casey to the image of your Son making him tireless in service to the poor, by his intercession and example, grant also to us, the same generosity and joy in giving ourselves in service to our neighbor. Amen. Include your intentions and conclude by saying an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be. Mindful of the life of Blessed Solanus, the second reading today is so very powerful because of his example. St. Paul in his letter to the Ephesians reminds us that we are to "live in a manner worthy of the call we have received". This call is given to us in our baptism; it is a covenant between God and each of us to live a life of goodness and service to the world. Our willingness to embrace holiness and reject evil is based upon our desire to live an evangelical witness of love, a love that can only come from God. When we look at the life of Blessed Solanus, how can we not be inspired. He embodied exactly what St. Paul wrote when he said, "with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace". Love, peace, goodness, justice, patience and all that is good is not possible without God in our lives. To try and find those things without God is not possible since God is the author of all that is good. In the ever increasing desire in today's world for doing "things that matter or bring about change," how much more radical could we be than to do exactly what St. Paul tells us to do and Blessed Solanus was able to do? How many of them do you see running around? When the world seeks to separate us in a desire to find what is unique about us, we find in the Bible the wisdom that allows our own character to be different while we all strive to be united by the fact that we share a common path to live a life worthy of our calling. St. Paul was not Solanus, nor were they like any other saint, but the saints all shared a common path, a life lived worthy of their calling. Your vocation is yours, your personal characteristics are yours, but what is common to us is our calling, our foundation must be based on living in humility, gentleness and bearing with each other in love. That is why we are disciples of Jesus, because he showed us how to live that life that comes from our baptismal covenant. Let us strive to be challenged by the words of St. Paul and the example of Blessed Solanus Casey. May they both pray for us. St. Augustine Festival We are very close to the start of this year s festival and so I wanted to thank all those volunteers who have been working so hard to make this year s festival a special event for our parish and the greater community. Thank you, as well, to all those who have already donated items and returned their raffle tickets. Those are ways to make sure that our festival is financially successful. If you have not already turned in your tickets, please do so. I want to also encourage you to attend the festival and invite others to do so. We have great entertainment planned for each day, special kids activities on Saturday, a vendor fair, a 3K run, a golf outing and of course great food. Please note the special mass times for that weekend. Parking will be limited in the lot as always, but parking will be available in the open space where the houses used to stand on Gleason Street. If you are able to walk, you may want to use that area and leave the lot for those who find it a bit harder to get around. Thank you for your consideration and patience. What would make our festival really successful though would be to have one person who has been away from the church be encouraged to come back to church because of their experience at the festival. That will require us to all put our best effort forward during these days. Lets be mindful of this goal and help everyone who comes feel welcome and like they belong. It would also help to pray for good weather. Time to register TV commercials are already advertising their back to school sales which is a good reminder to all of you if you have not yet registered your child for St. Augustine Pre- continued on Page 3

July 29, 2018 MALLIA S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1 school (ages 3-4), Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten through 8th grade program or the Faith Formation Program at Holy Family and St. Augustine. Now is the time to make sure your child is properly being formed in faith and knowledge by signing up. Remember, that your child needs two years of faith formation before being eligible to receive a sacrament. For those adults who have not completed their Sacraments of Initiation or those who have never been baptized, now is the time to sign up for the RCIA. Please contact Susan Finley for more information. Also, if you have been attending mass at either parish and have not yet registered at the parish that you worship at, please do so. It is important for us to know exactly who is registered here and who is not, as we will continue to use various ways of getting information out to all of you. That is why it is also necessary to update your information with the parish office. Thank you for helping keep our records straight. Congratulations to all our young people at the Goodells Fair I wanted to congratulate all of the young people and their parents who supported them in exhibiting and Page 3 showing animals and various crafts, photography and other 4-H activities at this years fair. I really enjoyed seeing you and your abilities on display. Many of you won awards that were well deserved and even if you did not, your participation is a wonderful thing. I really am very proud of all of you. Update on St. Phillip At this point there is really nothing new to report. The church has not sold and there are no offers at this time. Some have told me they heard it had sold, but it has not. Some items have been removed from the church and have found new homes in churches around the archdiocese. Some of the vestments will be sent to the missions around the world. I have asked priests who took some of the items to note that they came from St. Phillip Neri for future reference, and to please pray for the deceased members of the parish. In the future if you hear of something about the church, but you do not hear it from me, consider it to be not true. It is the only way to make sure the rumor mill is put out of business. Thank you. Have a great week and see you in church. Page 4 F A I T H M A T T E R S July 29, 2018 #SHIFT 2018 This year, 47 teens from St. Augustine and Holy Family Parishes went out to work and volunteer their time at ten different charity organizations performing the Corporal Works of Mercy as Jesus instructed us to do. These organizations included the Council on Aging (Meals on Wheels), Cass Community Social Services, Mid-City Nutrition, Kids in Distress, Capuchin Soup Kitchen, Blue Water Free Store, Spirit of Hope, Voices for Earth Justice Community Garden, SW Detroit Envision Community Garden, and Richmond Medilodge. Our teens completed various jobs for these organizations including delivering Meals on Wheels, preparing meals at the soup kitchens, various gardening jobs, working along side developmentally disabled adults, sorting and organizing clothing, and visiting with the elderly. During this week, they experienced a SHIFT in the way they perceive the dignity and worth of every human being. Here are some pictures from our week and some quotes from our teen participants. Go out. Become the word in body as well as spirit. Pope Francis We weeded the vegetable gardens. It was hard work, but it really makes you look at things from a different perspective. It really shows you how lucky you are. See insert for more pictures.

Be a hero for a day. Donate blood. ROSARY MAKERS Holy Family would like to begin a Rosary Makers Organization. We have been supporting a Missionary Priest in India for a number of years. He asks for more rosaries than we can accommodate at this time so we thought we would like to try to make them. We have several women in the parish who know how to make rosaries and would be willing to teach you. We would not begin this venture until September, but would like to know if there is interest among our parish family. We can sit down and work out a schedule that would accommodate the majority of those interested. If you think you would like to evangelize, meet more of your Parish family, and do a good deed, please call the office or Marlene Brown at 586-727-1696.
