Beloved: I remind you, to stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands (II Timothy 1:6). Who are the heroes of your life? Here I am not speaking of larger than life figures, I speak of those people who inspire you on a daily basis. They are in your life and you seek to grow to be like them. It may be your mother or father, a friend, a co-worker. They inspire you by their daily faithfulness, their hard work, their sense of peace, their joy, and their ability to sacrifice. The odds are that this person is filled with the Holy Spirit. These are signs of the Holy Spirit working in us. We could say they have the flame of the Spirit burning within them. Did you know we were all given this flame of the Spirit? It begins at our baptism. At that point the fire of the Holy Spirit begins to blaze up within us. St. Paul reminds Timothy of this today when he exhorts, I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands. We all have that flame in varying degrees. Those of you who camp know the importance of keeping your campfire burning. You have to build a good base and then have a supply of wood to keep the fire burning. If not it will go out. The same is true of our faith journey. We have received this flame and we must keep it burning. It builds on the fuel of the Sacraments and prayer. This flame exists in different levels in each of us. When we stay close to the Sacraments and the life of grace our fire burns brightly but when we pull away from the life of grace the flame grows dim. St. Paul reminds us that this flame is a gift. We have done nothing to deserve it. It is the result of Jesus dying on the Cross. It is the result of God s fabulous love for us. This gift should give us power in our life: The power to say no to sin, the power to sacrifice for the ones we love and the power to live the life of Christ. This flame should lead us to love. The sign of the Holy Spirit within us is that we love as Jesus did. We should also have self-control of both body and spirit. If we cannot control our speech, our appetites, and our attitudes we will be a poor witness to the world. Brothers and sisters, are we stirring that flame of faith within us or have we allowed it to dull? Here are a few practical tips to keep that flame burning. First is to pray every single day. As Catholics we need to keep the flame burning by speaking to Jesus and listening to the Holy Spirit every single day. There are two key sacraments for keeping the flame alive. They are the Eucharist and Confession. Let us make a Holy Communion every Sunday and let us keep our soul pure with Confession. If we have put the fire out through sin let us rush to Confession and ask the Holy Spirit to come back into our life to give us the gift of power, love, and self control The power of fire is impressive. How many wildfires start from a spark from a campfire or a thrown cigarette? Our world is spiritually dry. May we be a flame of faith to our families and the world. May we set all ablaze for Christ! -Fr. Tim McKeown If your family would like to sign up to be gift bearers for a mass in October please sign up on the clipboard on the table in back of church. Coloring pages for young children are available on the back tables for the weekends. There is a new choice of books on the back table from our lending library.
