St. James the Apostle and Our Lady of the Lake/Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic Parish with the Eucharist as the center of its life. Our mission, as disciples of Jesus Christ, is to build up the Kingdom of God by leading, nourishing and serving the community in Word and Sacrament. FROM THE DESK OF MSGR. MARTIN SEPTEMBER 10, 2017 Be All That You Can Be Wherever You Are! Sylvia Hill does not have a theology degree. She did not go to a seminary. She is not an ordained minister. Yet, in many small ways, she proclaims the good news of the gospel to hundreds of people every day. The tools of Sylvia s ministry are a notebook, shoe polish, rags, brushes and an engaging personality. Her chapel is a small shoeshine stand in Boston s Logan Airport. From early morning until late afternoon, travelers will plop down on one of the leather chairs at Sylvia s stand. Often, the conversation is just idle chat. However, some customers, responding to her affable and cheery personality, will share something more personal. Sylvia, who has a degree in counseling, will try to offer words of support and might share how her faith helped her. In her notebook, Sylvia will write down the many prayer requests she received every day, for people facing problems like serious illness, divorce, loss or financial crisis. Over the years, Sylvia has become friends with many of her repeat customers. Jimmy, for instance, was battling cancer and regularly made the trip to Boston for treatment from his home in Maine. Sylvia became the boy s soul mate, someone he could confide in. Sylvia took over the shoeshine business from her husband Donald, who died of cancer. With her educational background and managerial experience, she could have opted for a career in the corporate world. She never considered selling her business. Sylvia says, I can get excited about every day because every day is different. I am able to share the gospel unfettered and I know that they may never see me again. I do not proselytize or do anything like that. But I might say God is good or aren t we blessed or praise God, and that might open up a conversation. I did not want to just come to the airport and shine shoes. I wanted to provide a service to people and I wanted to make a difference, and God has answered my prayers. This is my ministry and this is where I am going to stay. The work of proclaiming the Father s reconciling love belongs to every one of us whether we teach math, manage a Fortune 500 company, are still in school or shine shoes for a living. Wherever we live, or work, or play, in own way, we are all called to make a difference. A Note from Fr. Clement This past Thursday I returned to Nigeria, leaving the wonderful Parish of St. James. Before I came to St. James, I was the priest in-charge of a new pastoral area called St. Mulumba s Catholic Church, in Nigeria. My people and I have been working hard to complete the church and the rectory. I will be most appreciated if you are able to help my parish with funds towards completion of the buildings. If you are able to help, please write a check to me Rev. Clement Kagoma, and mail: C/O Archbishops House, 17 Tafawa Balewa Way, Kaduna State, Nigeria. My email address is kagoclem@gmail.com. I enjoyed my summer here at St. James and am thankful for your friendship. God s Blessings to you and your families.
