ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT www.aod.org BOOK & GIFT SHOP Open weekends before & after Masses 26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FROM THE PASTOR S DESK By Fr. Terry Kerner Enclosed in this weekend s bulletin is the annual Financial Report for Fiscal year 2018. The Fiscal Year runs from July 1, 2017, to June 30, 2018. The shorthand version is FY 18 and represents a snapshot of the income and expenses over the course of twelve months. I have provided a commentary on the report as well. What is not included in the report are some interesting facts you should be aware of. Notably, we began and ended the fiscal year in the black-something we have been able to do over the last decade or so. Currently we have $55,705 in parish savings and expect in October an additional $8,839 from a CSA refund. There are 218 parishes in the Archdiocese of Detroit. With a registration of 578 households, St. Kateri shares with 77 other parishes 35% of the total number of parishes in the Archdiocese. Our current registration includes nearly 30 different zip codes from around southeast Michigan. Several people attend St. Kateri regularly but choose not to register for a variety of reasons, one of which is a desire to be buried from the old parish back in the old neighborhood. Nonetheless, they are always warmly welcomed by all. Sociologists have given titles to different age groups in our country. Borrowing their categories our parish demographics breakdown as follows: TITLE BORN AGE NUMBER PERCENT OF PARISH GI Generation 1901-1927 99-91 53 5 % Silent Generation 1928-1945 90-73 261 26% Baby Boomers 1946-1964 72-54 309 31% Generation X 1965-1980 53-38 114 11% Millennials 1981-2000 37-18 128 12% Generation Z 2001-2018 17-01 108 10% Yours truly falls into the Silent Generation and represents one of the 14% of AOD pastors in his seventies still serving. (Technically I enter that generation in a week with my birthday on October 3rd.) I want to thank Ellie Sajewski and Mary Masley for their efforts in pulling together the financial facts and demographics of the parish. It is also appropriate to thank all who have contributed their financial support and volunteer energy during the year. St. Kateri is a very good parish with many very great people. Count yourself among them!

Page 2 FAITH FORMATION By Grace Lakatos Family Faith Formation In the years that St. Kateri has changed to an ongoing continuous collection for our local food pantry, the needs of more families have been met. Feeding the hungry is one of the several Corporal Works of Mercy in the Catholic Church. Found in the teachings of Jesus, these works provide us with a model for how we should treat one another, namely, as if they were Christ in disguise. Sadly, hunger never takes a vacation or even a day off. On the last Monday of every month, our collection is gathered up, packed into a vehicle and delivered to St. Sebastian Food Pantry. The muscles behind this task are St. Sebastian s representative Matt Kulczyk and our own Ric LaFata. No matter the weather or the size of the load, these two men are always smiling as they complete the task. (I have noticed that the bigger the donation pile, the bigger their smiles!) On behalf of St. Sebastian and the families that they serve, thank you for your support and we hope you will be blessed beyond measure for your generosity. Tuesday, October 2nd 6:40 PM -Allegra & Nicholas Rocky New Home Blessing (by Auntie) Wednesday, October 3rd Holy Guardian Angels Joan Koziel (by Ann Lutz Family) Thursday, October 4th St. Francis of Assisi -Ann Lutz Birthday Blessings (by Doina) Friday, October 5th St. Francis Zavier Seelos, Priest -Monique Lutz Birthday Blessing (by Godmother) Halloween Candy Drive For the next 3 weekends, we will be collecting candy to be distributed by the seminarians, priests, and staff of Sacred Heart Major Seminary. Last year alone, over 2000 children were able to celebrate safely by trick or treating at the Seminary. The participants also were able to receive prayers, Reconciliation, hot beverages and donuts. Donations can be placed in the Halloween decorated baskets near the entrances to the church. Thank you for your generosity. Sacramental Preparation Classes From the excited fresh faces of our Reconciliation and 1st Eucharist students to the ever-changing ones of our Confirmation students, it is always exciting to experience the growth in these students lives. As we continue throughout the year, preparing to receive these Sacraments of Initiation, please keep these students in your thoughts and prayers. SCHOOL BELLS Sacred Heart Oktoberfest: Save the Dates: October 12th, 13th, and 14th. Sacred Fire: A vision for a Deeper Human and Christian Maturity, he explores the lifetime path to discipleship. He answers the question How can I give my life away more purely and more meaningfully? He leads us to a deeper, more mature spirituality. If you might be interested in this book study, contact Pat (313-562-6131) or Fran (313-562-6586) at Sacred Heart. The cost of the study will be the cost of the book, which should be approximately $15. We need to know of your interest in advance so we can order sufficient books for the first meeting. St. Frances Cabrini CYO Football & Soccer: St. Frances Cabrini in Allen Park is looking for boys in grades 5-8 to play CYO football and girls in grades 5-6 to play CUO soccer. They want you to know that if you are in high school and do not have a weekly youth group to attend that YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME to meet with them. Their first BRICK meeting this semester will be on Monday, October 15th at 7 to 8:30 PM. Other exciting BRICK news: Every other Monday that BRICK meets, they will be presenting a program for Catholic teenagers based on St. John Paul II s revolutionary Theology of the Body that helps Teens understand more profoundly the significance of their sexuality, its purpose and how this complements their call to greatness. This program is entitled You: Live, Love, and the Theology of the Body. This dynamic program will give teens the answers and the tools they need to successfully and safely navigate life. A parent information night will be held on Monday, October 22nd. Contact St. Sebastian s Youth Minister Giovanni Vitale at gvitaleii@gmail.com or call 313.969-7750 or St. Kateri s Dn. Tom Leonard at deacon@stkateridearborn.org or the parish office at 336-3227 for more information. IT S PET BLESSING TIME! Our annual Pet Blessing will take place on Saturday, October 6th at 1 PM.
