ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT www.aod.org BOOK & GIFT SHOP Open weekends before & after Masses FROM THE PASTOR S DESK By Fr. Terry Kerner It has been somewhat quiet around the parish for the last couple of weeks. I always hesitate to say this because whenever I do, things happen and we get very busy and make up for the quiet time. I guess we all need to enjoy whatever quiet times we get and enjoy their blessings. I once again wish to thank all who have contributed to the Catholic Services Appeal (CSA). We are currently seven percent over our target which means any amount contributed to the CSA at this point remains in the parish. As I mentioned previously, all overage will be applied to the cost of the new HV/AC and lighting in the parish hall. Already some donations have been made to the project s cost which we expect to see beginning in August. The renovation of the hall will present some inconvenience for us but nothing overwhelming. The end product will be most appreciated by all. Next weekend (July 22/23) as part of the Propagation of the Faith s Missionary Cooperative Plan, Fr. Valery Burusu will be visiting at all the liturgies. Father represents the Diocese of Nyundo located in the central Africa nation of Rwanda. Established in early 1952, the Diocese has over 600,000 Catholics with only seventy-four priests-one for every 8,000 parishioners. Fr. Valery will be here to tell his story and seek any help you can offer. May we all extend our hospitality and generosity to him. Have a great and QUIET week! FAITH FORMATION By Grace Lakatos August 1st will be opening day for registration for our parish s Faith Formation classes and Sacrament Preparation classes. Our Faith formation program includes 4 year old preschoolers through 8th grade. Please be sure to obtain a current Baptismal certificate for your child if the child was not baptized at St. Joseph., St. Martha or St. Kateri. Students for preparation for Reconciliation and 1st Eucharist must have completed one year of Faith Formation and must be enrolled in the current year of Faith Formation in addition to attending Sacramental Preparation classes. Students for preparation for Confirmation must have received 1st Eucharist, have completed six years of Faith Formation and be entering the 7th grade in the Fall. Preparation for Confirmation is a two year program. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. Faith Formation for One and All! A few changes are being made to our Faith Formation program this coming year. First and foremost, we re getting back to the Basics. Children and adults will be exploring what being a Catholic is all about. Another one of the best and biggest changes is that our preschoolers (Continued on page 2)

Page 2 (Continued from page 1) through 1st graders will be receiving their instructions during the Saturday Mass of our scheduled Faith Formation Days and then will return to their parents after the Eucharist and announcements. This will allow for our littlest disciples of God to receive the Good News at their level but not have to wait to get home to dinner and bedtime. It also allows for our parents to focus their hearts and their minds on the beautiful mystery of the Mass. Also, anyone whose children attend one of our Catholic schools or take Religious Education at another parish but wishes to attend the classes for the 2nd through 8th grades, or adults who want to get a refresher course on the basics of our Faith, may join in without a formal registration. Fill the bus! Keep your eyes open for great deals and mark your calendars for our collection of school supplies from August 1st to 27th with a delivery date tentatively set for August 28. The supplies that we collect are given to Nativity of Our Lord parish, which is located in one of the poorest zip codes of Southeast Michigan. Watch the bulletin for their wish list. Assistance will be needed in sorting, packaging and delivering the collection also. Correction: Due to the scheduled upgrading projects in our hall, cleaning of the kitchen cupboards will not take place until after their completion. No reason for us to have to clean the cupboards twice. Please watch the bulletin for the cleaning update. If you are interested in helping out, please leave your name and phone number with the parish office. SCHOOL BELLS Sacred Heart Enrollment for 2017-2018 school year: Wednesday, August 23, 8 AM 10 AM. They are experienced teachers and are deeply devoted to the Catholic faith. Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan, Sacred Heart Seminary and the Archdiocese of Detroit are encouraging Catholics to put their faith into action by participating in a six day volunteer project from July 31st to August 5th. The event is being organized by Life Remodeled, a Detroit based non-profit that invests cash, labor and materials into a designated neighborhood each year. This year the group will focus on the neighborhood surrounding Sacred Heart Seminary, St. Charles Lwanga Parish and St. Moses the Black. Twelve thousand volunteers are being recruited to remove blight, mow grass, provide home repairs, board up vacant houses and transform a former DPS school building into a community center. If you are interest in participating in this meaningful opportunity to witness the gospel in a very concrete way, go to the Archdiocesan website: www,aod.org for more information. If enough parishioners are interested, we can arrange for a group to carpool and work together for a day. Call the parish office at 313.336-3227. First and foremost, the archbishop himself, along with his top advisors. Behind the scene, every department in Central Services, faculty members from Sacred Heart Major Seminary, and many clergy. In the Communications Department we considered it a privilege to be part of this transformative moment. In addition to the online resources, the television and video recordings, and social media posts, The Michigan Catholic printed a special 4 page edition. It was distributed, along with a prayer. Stated below. God, our Father, you have called us to be witnesses to Jesus and have commissioned us to lead all people to encounter him. Send your Holy Spirit to enlighten our minds so that your will may be clear to us and that we may accept it. Transform us into a band of joyful missionary disciples embracing the fruits of Synod 16 so as to share the good news of Jesus Christ in southeast Michigan through joyful evangelization and service. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Amen. Who was she and is it true that she was a prostitute who followed Jesus around in his ministry? Recent biblical scholarship has been trying for a long time to correct Mary Magdalene's misconstrued reputation as a prostitute. Biblical information reveals her as one of the most important disciples of Jesus, following and financially supporting him during his ministry. She is also a faithful witness both to the Crucifixion and the first to see the risen Jesus. Further, in John's Gospel, she is commissioned by the risen Jesus to announce the good news to his disciples. Thus, she becomes the first evangelizer and proclaimer of the risen Lord. Her reputation as a prostitute arose from the misunderstandings of certain texts in Luke. Luke 8:2 reports Mary as being a follower of Jesus "from whom seven demons had gone out." This passage follows Luke's story of the sinful woman, a prostitute, who bathed Jesus' feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. Since that woman is not named, there came to be an association of that woman with Mary Magdalene, "from whom seven demons had gone out." Thus Mary became known as a prostitute. The readings and prayers for her feast day make no mention of her reputation as a sinner. Rather, they emphasize and highlight her role as the first witness to the risen Lord, and the first one commissioned by Jesus to tell of the good news to the disciples. Let us continue to be Mary Magdalene to the world. Anthony P. Alfano U. S. Marines Mark E. Baran U. S. Air Force Louis J. Bardel Brendan Burns U. S. Navy Conor Burns U. S.
