ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT www.aod.org BOOK & GIFT SHOP Open weekends before & after Masses FROM THE PASTOR S DESK By Fr. Terry Kerner As the Catholic Chaplain for the Dearborn Police Department I was privileged this past Tuesday to offer the invocation at the annual Awards Luncheon. Several officers deservedly received commendations, citations and awards. Individual accounts of each officer s meritorious actions were shared with the guests and Exchange Club members present. The stories of these men and women police officers portrayed actions that displayed outstanding professionalism and courage. Their many day to day duties and service is probably taken for granted by the average citizen. The officers quiet heroics are for the most part never known by the general public. From reviving a baby s breathing to quelling a potentially deadly domestic dispute, our Dearborn Police begin their shifts not knowing what they will encounter but willing to fulfill their oaths to serve and protect. Let s not ever forget them and their families who also serve as they await their loved ones return home each day. This weekend of Pentecost reminds us of God s Spirit in our lives and Christ s mandate to carry on his mission in the world. The Holy Spirit in no small way motivates and inspires our loving acts of Faith, Hope and Charity in our daily living. We should never underestimate our ability to do great things, hope for miracles and love generously in our lives. Two women being confirmed in their belief in the Holy Spirit s gifts are Marie Webb and Chelsea Piatek, both of whom were welcomed into the Church this past Easter. St. Kateri congratulates them both as they are Confirmed by Archbishop Vigneron this Sunday at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral! I want to thank all of you who have returned your gift and commitment to the Catholic Services Appeal (CSA). You have been generous in your offering and supportive of the many works in our Archdiocese. Currently we are at 67% of our parish target and look forward to meeting our mark in the next few weeks. Returns to the CSA can be made through the mail, the offertory or directly to the parish office. Thank you for all you do! Enjoy your week and a beautiful month of May.

Page 2 FAITH FORMATION by Grace Lakatos The number of storms rolling through our neighborhood lately finds both man and beast looking for a place of shelter, warmth and comfort. I have such a place at home as I m sure most of you do too. But I also have such a place here at St. Kateri. Walking into the church provides a calming balm to any troubles or tribulations playing havoc with my soul and my life. Over the years, I have turned more and more often to the one true constant in my life our God. In the Catholic faith, adoration is reserved for God alone and for Jesus present in the consecrated Eucharist. What do you think of when you think of sitting quietly in the Lord s presence? Are you excited? Intimidated? Confused on what to do? Or how to make the best adoration? Here are a few suggestions to get you started. Praying the Rosary is perfect if you prefer structure in your prayer life. Interceding for Others allows us to offer up our prayers and time for our family, friends, and the holy souls in purgatory. Lectio Divina is a slow contemplative praying of the Scriptures, using a text of your choosing, calming your inner self and reading and re-reading the Scripture passage as it invites you into a conversation with God. Journal to keep track of your intentions, write letters to God or just keep track of your thoughts during prayer. Sit in Silence and listen to what God has to say to you. (This last one may be the hardest one of all for many of us to do!) Adoration at St. Kateri is every Tuesday from 4:00 PM 6:30 PM in the church. It is an open invitation to all of God s children and is a wonderful way to put the world on hold and reconnect and recharge your relationship with the Lord. He s there...waiting for you. *Confirmation Preparation classes will meet next on Monday, May 21st at 6 PM. PARISH NEWS MAY OCTOBER ROSARY Please join us on Monday evenings at 6 PM at the Blessed Mother s Shrine to say the rosary. You may wish to bring a lawn chair if you need to be seated. MEMORIAL DAY MASS Memorial Day Mass will be celebrated at on May 28th. See you there. JPII GIFT AND BOOK SHOP NEWS With Spring and all the recent rains, gardening season is upon us. The Gift and book Shop now carries small garden statues and wind chimes. Add a reminder of God s presence in all creation to your newly planted garden. This is also a season for moving into new homes. St. Joseph home seller statues and house warming gifts are available in the shop. Stop by and browse before and after weekend Masses. TRAVEL NEWS Please place your reservations for our French Canadian Autumn trip as it is very popular. Flyers are available at the entrances to the church. The trip is September 23-29 to Montreal, Quebec City and Niagara Falls including visits to St. Anne De Beaupre Basilica, Montmorency Falls, St. Joseph s Oratory, the shrine of St. Kateri and city sightseeing tours. The trip cost is $1,379 per person (double occupancy). An enhanced driver s license, passport card or passport is required. Call Pat Ayland at 441-3355 or the church office at 336-3227 with questions. A MESSAGE WORTH REPEATING I errored last week by not putting in the name of Phyllis Polydoras in her Note of Gratitude. As Phyllis continues to recover, note that she is ever so grateful for all the prayers, cards, and phone calls said for her good health. Thank You! So far, there are only three American-born saints: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton ( 1975), St. Katharine Drexel ( 2000)and St. Kateri Tekakwitha (2012). Fr. Solanus Casey is only the second American-born male to receive the title of Blessed. The other is Blessed Stanley Rother, a priest of the Diocese of Oklahoma who was martyred in Guatemala in 1968. Father Solanus s consistently poor academic performance worried his Franciscan superiors, so they ordained him as a simplex priest in 1904, meaning he did not have the ability to hear confessions or preach doctrinal sermons.
