Psalm I will praise you, Lord, in the assembly of your people (Psalm 22). Second Reading Let us love not in word or speech, but in deed and truth (1 John 3:18-24). Gospel Remain in me, as I remain in you. I am the vine, you are the branches (John 15:1-8). OFFICE HOURS Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm; Closed for lunch 12:00-1:00 pm. Saturday 8:00 am-12:00 noon. (Closed Sundays) LIVING BRANCHES The Gospel and second reading for this Fifth Sunday of Easter emphasize the need for us to remain in Christ, and he in us. This shared life finds expression in the image of the one vine and many branches. We become living branches of the vine, members of the Body of Christ through baptism, Eucharist, and confirmation, sacraments of sharing God s own life. The First Letter of John describes the fruit of this vine as active love of neighbor: And his commandment is this: we should believe... and love one another (1 John 3:23). Our first reading from Acts shows us an example of someone who shares in Christ s life in the person of Saint Paul. Paul s fearless witness, even at the risk of his life, is proof to everyone that the risen Lord s Spirit truly fills him with life and is bearing fruit in him. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

First Fifth Sunday of Advent Easter -- April December 29, 2018 3, 2017 Cheers! As announced last week in an email that I sent to registered parishioners (who have given us their email address) and in Mass announcements we have a date for the Dedication Mass: Friday, June 22, at 6:00 p.m. Bishopdesignate George Leo Thomas picked the date and when I told him that it was my birthday (74th!), he said all the better!. The church building should be done by the end of May, but we have decided to use any time between end of church construction and Dedication Date (6/22/2018) to test-run all systems so that every thing is functioning smoothly by that Dedication Mass itself. In a building this size and complex, there s a lot to check out: sound system, security (cameras and alarm), internet, projection screens, video cameras, air conditioning, microphones, lighting (including dimming and color changes), plumbing, baptismal font (heating, purifying and fill, flow & drain), phones, doors (opening, closing and locking) etc. Then there is the setting up offices, bride s room, choir room and sacristies with furniture and equipment. Finally, we need to bring in our liturgical ministers to practice in the new space: musicians (cantors and instrumentalists), lectors, altar servers, Eucharistic Ministers baptism coordinators, and clergy. I am pleased to announce that we have a new Director of Liturgy Kayla Falco. Kayla has been involved in the parish for many years as weekend Mass coordinator (plus volunteering in Youth Ministry). For almost a year, Kayla has been taking classes in liturgy through an extension program of Notre Dame; I have been monitoring these class sessions with Kayla and will continue to do so as she takes on the responsibilities of our worship needs in the new Church. Kayla is very excited as she has long wanted to be involved in liturgical planning and implementation here at Holy Spirit. She begins on Tuesday, May 1. Welcome, Kayla! Of course, I must thank Louie Latina who has had the double work of Youth Ministry and Liturgy for over nine years. Louie has done a magnificent job in making our liturgies at Holy Spirit so beautiful, inspirational and welcoming. We had discussed many years ago that when the new church is built, we would split his jobs so that he can concentrate on youth ministry more fully. He has done an amazing job juggling both jobs for all this time! Youth Ministry (Upper Room & Edge) is a full-time ministry and with many more families most likely joining the parish, his work with our youth will only increase. So again, welcome, Kayla, and thanks, Louie. Life at Holy Spirit is only going to get bigger and better. We are still in the process of hiring a new Director of Music, an IT person and a Maintenance Crew. As these jobs are filled, I will announce the changes and welcome our new staff members. NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation For All Losses New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of loss and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful and meaningful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. HOLY SPIRIT NEW BEGINNINGS HAS ADDED A DIVORCE MINISTRY A workshop to support those who are divorced will be offered beginning on May 7 th and running for 11 weeks. Compassionate, Christian, divorced and trained facilitators and parishioners, Barb Fraser and Bob Clark, will use a positive psychology approach to help divorced individuals navigate through this difficult time and move toward healing and inner peace. Please call the parish office at 702-459-7778 or email holyspiritdivorceministry@gmail.com to inquire or to register. Bishop Thomas invites you to join in the celebration of the ordination to priesthood of transitional deacon Miguel Corral. The celebration will take place Thursday May 31, beginning at 6pm, at Guardian Angel Cathedral. There will be a light reception following the ordination mass, in Anderson Hall. Deacon Miguel is from the parish of St. Bridget, and has also served in other parishes in the Diocese of Las Vegas throughout his journey toward priesthood, including St. Anne, St. Christopher, St. Francis of Assisi and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton; he also served at Catholic Charities. Fr. Miguel's first mass following his ordination will be Friday June 1, at 5pm at St. Anne. All are welcome! Fr. Miguel will also be presiding in English at St. Francis of Assisi - Mass of Thanksgiving, Sunday, June 3rd at 11:30 am. All are welcome! We are in need of Baptism Coordinators! A Baptism Coordinator arrives 30 minutes before Mass on an assigned day to meet the family, check their documents, briefly cover what will happen during the baptism (a refresher), and then assist the family and Father Bill as needed. You can pick your favorite Mass day/time as your default Mass too! No heavy lifting! If interested, please contact Deacon Dan to volunteer at: deacondan@holyspiritlv.org. Saint Anne Catholic School 1813 S. Maryland Parkway, is enrolling new students for the 2018-2019 school year, Pre-Kindergarten (4 year old) through Grade 8. The Nevada School Choice Scholarship program has also begun taking applications for its scholarships. Scholarships range from $1,200 to $5,500 per student per year (renewable through grade 12), making a Catholic School education more affordable than ever, and in some cases, free! For more information regarding scholarships and registration, please call the Saint Anne School office at 702-735-2586, or contact us at school@stannelvnv.org. Page 8

April 14th through May 6th Last year, several members of our Outreach Ministry toured Catholic Charities campus to find out more about their many programs and how we might partner with them. As we were touring their amazing food pantry, we noticed a room that was practically empty with a sign above reading Baby Room. We inquired as to their needs and how we might assist them. They asked if we could hold a drive to collect items that the families need for their little ones. They said that during the months of May and June, they are dangerously low of important items. Because of your generosity in the past, we are asking you to continue to make a difference in the lives of little ones served by Catholic Charities. Please consider picking up one or more of the following items and bring them to church on April 14th through May 6th: Baby Formula: Similac Advanced Disposable Diapers (Mostly need sizes are 3-6) Baby Wipes Baby Hygiene items New outfits for boys and girls (all sizes) Baby blankets, receiving blankets, hats, booties, mitts for newborns, etc. If you are unable to shop and would like us to shop for you, please place your donation in an envelope labeled Baby Shower and put it in the Sunday collection basket and we will see to it that these babies are well taken care of. For this particular drive, we ask that all items donated are NEW. God bless you for taking care of these families and babies. Page 9
