WELCOME TO HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Page 5 SISTER CONNIE S FAREWELL MESSAGE With Deep Gratitude. Heartfelt thanks to our Pastor, Fr. Don D Angelo, for his warm welcome to me in August of 2005. Thanks to Fr. Angel, Deacon Michael, our wonderful Secretaries and to all my friends of Holy Name of Jesus Parish. I will use the words of St. Paul to better express my gratitude, I always give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ for you, because of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love that you have for one another. This great, beautiful and unique City of San Francisco has been everything people told me and much more; the cool climate, the fog, the cable cars, the hills, the vast Pacific ocean, the Golden Gate Bridge, etc. but I discovered beautiful, loving people with a deep sense of God and a deep sense of service to that loving God. I want to thank each one of you, for your love, your support, your prayers, your service to the Church, your spirit of Community and for your living out the Motto of the Parish, No one a stranger. You welcomed me with such kindness, and that kindness always remained, I felt that the same God who was with me back home has been with me here also. Yes, I will leave my heart in San Francisco because I have shared my life with the People of God of Holy Name parish for nearly three years, and my life will never be the same, my love for God is deeper because of this Community. I thank the beautiful and generous parishioners I worked closer with; The Homebound Committee; The Music Ministry for the H.B., the Eucharistic Ministers for the H.B. The Religious Education Teachers; the Senior Club Committee; The Sewing Ladies; the Catholic Ladies Aid Society; and the Legion of Mary, The Rel. Ed. Children (CCD) and their parents; the Faithful Drivers who were always available for whatever was needed; thanks, prayers and blessings to all of our Homebound parishioners who always welcomed us with such great faith and joy into their homes. I hope you know what an inspiration you have been to me as we have ministered and prayed together. In sadness but in the joy of making Jesus known, we do all for the glory of God. I pray that our Lord may reward you as only God can. Please be assured of my prayers for you, and please keep me in yours. Blessings to all! Stand Up and Give! The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building. Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute. The substitute wanted to know what to play. "Here's a copy of the service," he said impatiently. "But you'll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances." During the service, the minister paused and said, "Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected, and we need $4000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up." At that moment, the substitute organist played, "The Star Spangled Banner". And that is how the substitute became the regular organist! Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles THE NAME GAME Today s solemnity might have been Saints Simon and Saul if it hadn t been for some renaming. There are numerous examples from the Bible of people being given new names to indicate their new status in God s plan of salvation. This practice begins with Abraham, and we see the fruit of that in today s renaming of Simon as Peter when he makes his great profession of faith in Jesus as Messiah (Christ) and Son of God. Saul, though Acts recounts a significant conversion experience for him, is renamed rather silently by the New Testament. Even though the author of the Acts of the Apostles occasionally slips and still calls him Saul after his conversion experience, his new name most likely intended by the New Testament to differentiate his Christian mission from his life as a Jew occurs most frequently in Acts, and exclusively in his own letters, as Paul. The naming of Peter is reminiscent of our own naming at baptism, when our own faith in Jesus as Christ was proclaimed. Even though most of us never go through a changing of our proper name later in life (though this was characteristic of religious profession for many years), a bit of reflection will help us to discern the ways in which God has called us anew or named us again for our own role in proclaiming the Good News. BOTH/AND, NOT EITHER/OR It s not surprising that, as we read through the New Testament, Peter tended to be a stronger advocate of adhering to the ways of religious praxis inherited from the Jewish tradition. Paul, meanwhile, led the church to a life of more freedom within religious law, focused more on faith and the Spirit. Wisely, the celebrations of these two saints, bedrock of the earthly church, are combined, for the Church has always lived and witnessed best when we have respected and honored our heritage, customs, and traditions of faith, yet remained open to change and ongoing revelation from on high. The Body of Christ, in this way, is the same as any other body: it remains the same body in many ways, but also must seek ongoing nourishment, encounter illness, and inevitably be altered through growth. The Holy Spirit has provided admirable examples for us in the persons of Peter and Paul. As they grounded in their faith, named and called for Jesus Christ s mission sought to spread the gospel in every place at every hour, let us likewise joyfully join that same mission. Today s Readings: Acts 12:1 11; Psalm 34:2 9; 2 Timothy 4:6 8, 17 18; Matthew 16:13 19 Copyright 2007, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
