WHEREVER WE ARE, LET US LIGHT CANDLES TOGETHER. Rabbi Michael S. Jay On Passover, one of the first things we do during our Seders is raise the matzah up and say: Behold, the bread of poverty that our ancestors ate while in the land of Egypt. All who are hungry come and eat. All who are needy, come and participate in the Passover ritual. Today we are here; next year in the Land of Israel. Today we are slaves; next year we shall be free people. The notion that the goodwill message of the Seder is not just for us, but for "all who are needy", is an important part of our understanding of the Passover holiday and its meaning. We are required to take care of those less fortunate than us, whether they be ill, economically challenged, or incomplete in some other way. This ongoing commitment, this near compulsion that we have to repair the world, is beautifully illustrated by the JCC's donation this week, with the help of The Jewish Federations of North America, of a sum of money to St. Francis to help the church to repair the immense damage it sustained during Super Storm Sandy. (See picture below) As we sit down to our Seders this year and partake of the ritual that has been ours for thousands of years, let us be thankful for the gifts that we have and for the tools that we have been given to make our lives, and the lives of others, a blessing. Shabbat Shalom - Michael S. Jay March 2013 PS: Look elsewhere in this Shabbat Reminder to see an essay I wrote about the Biblical heroes of the Passover story whom we do not see in the Haggadah. It might be interesting for a family to assign someone to take one of these unmentioned heroes and give a brief summary of his, or her, contribution to the holiday. This service was very important to Rabbi Jack and it is fitting that this year the service will be dedicated to him. Rabbi Jay will be conducting the service using the liturgy written by Rabbi Jack. Father Steve Kluge of St. Francis Parish will be our guest speaker. The Island Singers will perform that evening. Bonnie & Harold Farin are the chairpersons for this very special service. result some of the incredible events and people are given a back seat on Seder night. While I hold nothing against the Rabbis' decision and, indeed, love the format of the Seder, it is important that we not lose sight of those who were actually involved in the story. The purpose of this little session is to refamiliarize ourselves with the heroic cast of characters who made the story possible. Should you choose to mention these people at your Seder, it might lead to interesting conversation. Click on this link ot read more: BIBLE HEROES A Zissin Pesach to all!!!! RABBI MICHAEL S.
