ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT www.aod.org BOOK & GIFT SHOP Open weekends before & after Masses ASCENSION OF OUR LORD FROM THE PASTOR S DESK By Fr. Terry Kerner We wish all our mothers and grandmothers our best wishes on their special day. Certainly every day should be SPECIAL for them. It is really up to us to make that possible! Whether your moms or grandmothers are living or deceased, they will be remembered in all my Masses this weekend. God s blessings on all the good women of our parish. One mother who belongs personally to all of us is the Blessed Virgin Mary. Our first communicants joined me last Sunday as we celebrated our annual May Crowning. Beginning in the month of May through October the Rosary is prayed on Mondays at 6:00 PM at Mary s shrine behind the church. All are invited to gather in prayer each week and honor Our Lady. Next weekend (May 19-20), we celebrate Pentecost and the Birthday of the Church. The first reading from the Acts of the Apostles recalls how the Apostles...filled with the Holy Spirit began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. We are inviting any parishioner who would like to speak in a different tongue to participate next weekend at one of the masses by taking a petition or two in the Prayer of the Faithful. Give me a call this week and let me know if you want to participate. A form below is available to also make your desire known. I want to thank all who have made their contribution to the Catholic Services Appeal thus far. We have currently reached about 25% of our goal. As in past years, once the goal is reached any further gifts to the CSA remain in the parish. Each year St. Kateri hopes to use these gifts for capital projects around the parish. This year resealing and striping the parking lots is the project needing our attention. I am asking that everyone try to be as generous as they can be this year as you have been in the past. Look to your church buildings and grounds to see how your contribution is being used. Many thanks! Please keep Fr. Gary in your prayers. He underwent knee surgery this past Friday. We will keep you posted on how the ole boy is doing! FORM TO READ ON PENTECOST WEEKEND You may place this in the collection basket or bring to the office. ALL AGES ARE WELCOME! filled with the Holy Spirit, they begin to speak in different tongues I would like to celebrate my ancestral or learned language(s) this Pentecost. Please count me in to read a petition at the Prayer of the Faithful on Pentecost on: May 19, Saturday, 4 PM Language May 20, Sunday, 9 AM May 20, Sunday, 11 AM Language Language Name Phone Email

Page 2 FAITH FORMATION by Grace Lakatos Pope Francis has spoken many times on the wondrous celebration of the Eucharist in the Catholic Church. He has encouraged us to be transformed by the reception of Christ s Body and Blood. This past Sunday, transformation was evident on the faces of Wilson, Sonny and Sebastian as they celebrated their 1st Eucharist. Without a doubt, those of us witnessing the celebration were taken back to the days of our own 1st Eucharist. In talking with the boys prior to Mass, they asked Ms. Colleen (their teacher) and me if the whole church watched our 1st Eucharist. We assured them that yes, they did and, in fact, we were able to tell them how long it had been since that day. Ms. Colleen was able to respond a modest 19 years while I was able to reply that it would be 51 years on the very next day, May 7th. Each year, this day in the Church, brings me back to St. Barbara Church and I want to thank Wilson, Sonny and Sebastian for that wonderful memory. May God bless you boys each and every day of your lives. In the next few weeks, finalization of next year s Faith Formation and Sacrament Preparation classes will be taking place. Registration for both will begin on July 1st, as requested by many families, so that the paperwork will be out of the way before the school year starts. This will include registration for our 4 year-old to Kindergarten program as well. Please remember your child must attend 1st & 2nd grade Faith Formation in addition to Sacramental Preparation classes in order to celebrate Reconciliation and 1st Eucharist. In order to celebrate Confirmation a child must attend 3rd through 8th grade Faith Formation and 2 years of Sacramental Preparation classes. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at the parish office. Last week I failed to thank someone who has been helping me with numerous classes, programs and events. I often call her my personal shopper as she is willing to perform that duty of which I ve never been fond. A huge thank you and hug to Teresa Petlichkoff for always being willing to help, is flexible in time sharing, finding bargains, and having some awesome suggestions! *Confirmation Preparation classes will meet next on Monday, May 21st at 6 PM. PARISH NEWS MAY OCTOBER ROSARY Please join us on Monday evenings at 6 PM at the Blessed Mother s Shrine to say the rosary. You may wish to bring a lawn chair if you need to be seated. ST. MARTHA PAVER MEMORIAL For those who would like to honor their loved ones with a paver at the St. Martha Statue and Prayer Garden, you may come to the Parish Office to fill out a form with the necessary information and your choice of wording on the paver. The price for a paver is $125.You may wish to go by the statue and read some ideas that others have chosen to place on their pavers. JPII GIFT AND BOOK SHOP NEWS Stop by to browse our religious cards, gifts, books and sacramental items. If you don t see what you are looking for, we may be able to special order your request. We are back to our regular hours before and after weekend Masses. Please be patient if the shop seems crowded. Just think...the parking lots will be clear when you re ready to leave! TRAVEL NEWS Please place your reservations for our French Canadian Autumn trip as it is very popular. Flyers are available at the entrances to the church. The trip is September 23-29 to Montreal, Quebec City and Niagara Falls including visits to St. Anne De Beaupre Basilica, Montmorency Falls, St. Joseph s Oratory, the shrine of St. Kateri and city sightseeing tours.
