St. James the Apostle and Our Lady of the Lake/Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic Parish with the Eucharist as the center of its life. Our mission, as disciples of Jesus Christ, is to build up the Kingdom of God by leading, nourishing and serving the community in Word and Sacrament. FROM THE DESK OF THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL APRIL 29, 2018 It looks like spring has already arrived and schools are in the last quarter of the year. At this time many parents reevaluate the academic decisions they have made for their children. Many may not be aware that right across the driveway from Saint James the Apostle Church is Saint James the Apostle School, which has been in existence for 64 years. Our school was started by the Sparkhill Dominican Sisters and their vision was to create a Catholic community of learning united in the common belief in Jesus Christ. It was their mission to create an educational community that fostered the development of the whole person, integrating the teachings of Jesus on salvation, community and service. By providing students the experience of learning, living and loving in this educational environment, and by using a variety of creative approaches to meet their needs, their focus was to enable these young people to lead meaningful, productive and enriching lives. Their educational goal was based on respect for the unique dignity of each child ensuring that each child was to be treated with respect in order to nurture a positive self-image. Here we are 64 years later and the mission which was the foundation set by the Sparkhill Dominicans is still our mission today. We have nurtured countless numbers of children spiritually, academically and socially. It is our privilege to see them grow from the moment they timidly walk into PreK until the night of graduation when we see standing before us mature, confident and eager young men and women ready to take on the world. It is our hope that you will consider a Catholic Education for your children. This is a world which challenges our young people in ways we could have never imagined. It is a time that calls for values to be front and center, to slow things up a bit for them and to allow them to grow in a school environment that teaches them to lead with compassion and grace. We are a PreK through Grade 8 school and invite you to walk across the driveway to see the difference a Catholic education makes in the lives of children. We have only one opportunity to launch our children into the world. It is our hope to do so in a way that keeps them safe, close to their faith and prepared to face the challenges the lie ahead. Readings for this Sunday First Reading: Acts 9:26-31 Second Reading: I John 3:18-24 Gospel: John 15:1-8 Jesus compares himself to a vine and compares his father to the vine-grower. He explains how God prunes the barren branches so that the rest might yield more fruit. He reminds them that apart from himself, his followers could not bear fruit. Readings for Next Week First Reading: Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48 Second Reading: I John 4:7-10 Gospel: John 15:9-17 Jesus asks his disciples to live on in his love and to Love one another as I have loved you. He explains that he chose them to follow him and promises if they keep his commandments they will have anything that they ask for in his name.

We have celebrated Mass at the Altar of our Terrace and Columbarium many times. If you have questions or have been thinking of purchasing a niche, call Donna McCarthy at 845-225-2079 Ext. 105, on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday to schedule an appointment. For those not familiar with a Columbarium, it is a Latin word, which describes a collection of niches to house urns containing, cremated human remains. The niches are usually inscribed with the person s name and dates of birth and death. They are constructed to serve as permanent resting places for our loved ones in a churchyard and landscaped terrace. We pray that this holy ground becomes a final resting place for many of our loved ones.
