DECEMBER 27, 2015 & JANUARY 3 2016 PASTORAL MESSAGE SAINT JOSEPH Saint Joseph is sometimes known as Joseph the silent. He was a righteous man and that is all we really need to know about him. He never speaks a word in the scriptures, and yet his influence on Jesus is undeniable. Joseph was obedient, chaste, strong, and hardworking. Who would not want these qualities? Silence is a great virtue that can help us to be more like Joseph. Silence is the path to obtaining a clearer understanding of God s will. Silence prepares the way for us to receive God into our hands like Joseph did at that first Christmas. Silence prepares us for a reverent reception of Holy Communion. Certainly Joseph did not speak words but he had a powerful voice. It is just as certain that each of us talks too much. This Christmas perhaps we could all give the gift of a little more silence, and a little more righteousness. DIOCESAN SCHOOL NEWS ST JOHN CATHOLIC SCHOOL 872-7115 WWW.STJOHNSCHOOLWINSLOW.ORG If you ask children what a New Year s resolution is, they will tell you something like this. it s a thing that you want to do better in the New Year. Well, we all know it s a bit more than that, but sometimes simplistic is better. The television is full of commercials about how we can improve our looks, our bodies and our health. Children don t think along these lines. They immediately think of ways they can improve their hearts through behavior changes. Let s look to the children for examples as we set our New Year s resolutions. How can we improve our actions so our hearts will be closer to Jesus. Happy New Year from all of us at St. John School. Classes are offered monthly on the last Monday of the month, registration is required. Throughout the Holy Year of Mercy, the Diocese of Portland will focus on a specific work or works of mercy each month. Releases will be issued that will highlight each month s specific work of mercy, including an opening prayer, a reading, a responsorial psalm, intercessions, a closing prayer, suggestions for works of mercy, and a reflection from an individual or individuals who possess a special personal connection to the work of mercy. For January 2016, the monthly theme is Clothe the Naked CORPORAL WORK OF MERCY To clothe the naked means providing something to wear for someone who has none, or even very little. The Biblical sense of the term, however, also can mean bringing people out of darkness into the light. In Genesis, Adam and Eve saw their nakedness when they disobeyed God. We note as well that salvation is described as clothing a person in a white garment a symbol still used at baptism. Stripping a person of clothes is an act of humiliation and degradation whereas clothing another affirms their dignity as a child of God. January 3: Make it your New Year s Resolution to go through your closets and donate items to thrift stores. A Pro Life Holy Hour will be held at the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at 1:00pm on January 3rd.
