3 Liturgical Bits & Bytes Music Ministers Who are the music ministers in liturgy? We refer to the instrumentalists and vocalists who lead us in song as the music ministers. And so they are. However, this can be misleading, because WE, the COMMUNITY, are the primary music ministers in liturgy. Our job is to sing the songs, to witness to our faith to one another through our singing, and to encourage others to do the same through our enthusiastic song. It is important that we support one another in song and that we hear one another and are not overwhelmed by electronic amplification or muted by sound-absorbing materials. Singing together is an important element of the liturgy which transforms us from independent individuals to a unified worshiping body. If we feel we do not sing well, we can always remember that Psalm 95:1 invites us to make a "joyful noise" in our praise of God. Copyright 2008 Resource Publications, Inc. All rights reserved. The Nativity of the Lord CHRISTMAS MASSES CHRISTMAS EVE The Vigil Mass 4PM Notre Dame 4PM St. John 6PM Notre Dame Mass During the Night 10PM St. John CHRISTMAS DAY Mass at Dawn 7:30AM St. John Mass During the Day 9AM Notre Dame Taking into consideration requests from the people and the availability of ministers for Mass, the Mass During the Night will be celebrated at 10PM rather than 12AM. Also, a Mass at Dawn has been added this Christmas Day. Sunday Readings & Reflections Readings for Sunday, December 18 4th Sunday of Advent Welcoming Light Reading I Isaiah 7:10-14 (birth of Emmanuel) Reading II Romans 1:1-7 (greetings from Paul) Gospel Matthew 1:18-24 (the birth of Jesus) Key Passage: When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took Mary as his wife. (Matthew 1:24) Adult: Whom do you find it difficult to welcome in your life? What can you do to overcome that? Youth: What could you do this week to make someone feel welcome, as Joseph welcomed Mary? Saint of the Week St. John of the Cross On December 14 th the Church celebrated the Memorial of St. John of the Cross. Born in Spain in 1542, John entered the Carmelite order in He was attracted to the life of the Carthusians and was about to leave the Carmelites when Teresa of Avila persuaded him to lead a reform movement instead. This reform brought about a new energy to the Carmelite order. Renowned for his wisdom and sanctity, John died in This great mystic wrote numerous works, including The Dark Night of the Soul and The Ascent of Mount Carmel. His spiritual writings remain a fitting testimony to his life. John of the Cross was canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726 and in 1926 was declared a Doctor of the Church. St. John of the Cross is the patron and protector of mystics, theologians, and poets. Parish Offertory Offertory for December 4 - $14, Offertory for December 11 - $14, Average offertory to date - $15, The budget is based on a weekly average offertory of $15, per week. There will only be one collection at all of the Christmas Masses. Thank you for your continued support of our parish. CONCERNING SECOND COLLECTIONS Our weekly parish offertory gift is always compromised on the weekends of second collections. Please keep in mind that what we offer to support the mission and ministries of those second collections should be above and beyond our budgeted weekly parish offering. It is not necessary to support every second collection. Choose those that are near and dear to your heart!

December 18: O Leader of the House of Israel, giver of the Law to Moses on Sinai: come to rescue us with your mighty power! MOUNT MERICI ACADEMY NEWS Like us on Mount Merici Academy students and staff would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We have been busy preparing during the Advent season for the birth of Jesus. During Advent, our students and their families very generously collected needed items for the Home For Little Wanderers. We are very grateful that our Ursuline Serviam tradition of service to our community is so strong within our students and families! We would like to thank everyone who helped make the Christmas Fair a success. Many wonderful people came forward to prepare for the fair and many made donations. We would also like to thank all the businesses who sent in donations. We would not be able to continue the tradition of the fair without all of this support. Our Christmas Fair is such a great place to reconnect with old friends and family members. We thank everyone for coming to share in the spirit of the fair. Your support is such a special gift to our school. New Altar Servers Frs. Dan and Matt, with the help of some of our experienced servers, recently trained eight new Altar Servers for our Parish. They will be serving at several of our Masses. We thank them for their most important service to!
