Fr. Brian Bell, Pastor Mark 1: 40-42 A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, "If you wish, you can make me clean." Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, "I do will it. Be made clean." The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. Dear Parishioners: Today s Gospel reminds us of the awesome healing power of Jesus. Wouldn t it be great to have that same healing power? We may not be able to physically touch someone as Jesus did and witness instant healing; but we do have the power to help change lives. Every gift you make to the Charity & Development Appeal helps to bring transformational change to others. Your CDA gift helps children find stable, loving foster and adoptive families through Catholic Charities. Senior citizens receive assistance and care through Foundation for Senior Living. Catechists teaching religious education receive training and resources through Diocesan programs. Deacons and seminarians receive financial support and formation to serve parishes in our Diocese. You can be the heart and hands of Jesus with your gift to the CDA. I strongly encourage you to support this annual appeal. To learn more, go to dphx.org/cda. Take a pledge card and envelope, and make your gift to the CDA today. Bless you your gift gives hope to others. Yours in Christ, Fr. Brian The annual Charity and Development Appeal has begun. Before all else, the Gospel invites us to respond to the God of love who saves us, to see God in others and to go forth from ourselves to seek the good of others. Pope Francis The annual Charity and Development Appeal (CDA) provides critical funding to over 70 programs and organizations across the Diocese. The CDA serves the basic needs of our large and fast-growing community beyond what any one parish or community can do alone. Together we can achieve more. With your gift to the CDA, you heed the call to be an instrument of God s mercy. For more information or to donate online, visit dphx.org/cda. Thank you for your support. FAST AND ABSTINENCE On Ash Wednesday and all of the Fridays of Lent, Catholics over the age of 14 are required to abstain from meat and from foods made with meat. Masses on ASH WEDNESDAY are at 8:30am and 6:00pm. The church still recommends abstinence on all Fridays of the year, if not from meat then to substitute some other form of penance. February 11, 2018 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time Faith Formation News Page 3 All third grade and Heritage children preparing for Confirmation and First Communion this spring need to save the date of Saturday, February 24th for a Day of Reflection. This is a very important part of their preparation for sacraments as we cannot possibly cover all materials during regular class time. The day will begin with Registration at 11:45am in the Parish Hall, followed by several workshops during the day for the children. The parents are asked to come to the Church at 3:30pm for a meeting with Father Brian and then the family will join their candidate in the Parish Hall for a pizza supper. All families are invited to conclude the day at the 5pm Mass where the children will be recognized, introduced to the community and prayed for in a special way. Please contact me at the Parish Office if you did not receive an invitation to this special day. We need to make sure you are on our sacrament mailing list. Sacrament classes (Second, Third and Heritage) are closed until next fall. All other grade level classes remain open all year. Easter is early this year, so it is very important that all children receiving sacraments are here every week as we have less class time to prepare for the reception of First Reconciliation, Confirmation and Eucharist. First Reconciliation for all second graders will be Saturday, March 24, 2018 @ 10:00am. Confirmation and First Communion will be celebrated at 2:00pm on Sunday, April 8, 2018. As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns about Elementary Faith Formation, Sacrament Preparation (Elementary, Middle or High School) or Adult Confirmation or you would like to be a catechist for Faith Formation, please contact me at kstine@stboc.org or call me at the Parish Office, 480-661-9843, Ext.309. God s Blessings, Kathie Adult Confirmation St. Bernard s will offer an evening of preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation for all adults, 18 and over and out of High School. This is not for those seeking conversion to the Catholic Faith. This is a class designed for those whom, for whatever reason, missed the sacrament of Confirmation at an earlier age. Confirmation is the second sacrament of Initiation and has been offered at different ages all around the country. Our diocese has moved the sacrament to third grade and it is now received at the First Communion Mass. Come and learn about the theology, history, symbols and the powerful work of the Holy Spirit as the gifts and fruits of the Spirit are bestowed upon the candidate at Confirmation. There will be one evening of preparation offered at St. Bernard s, so please try to schedule some time to complete your initiation into the Catholic Faith. You cannot be a sponsor or godparent without reception of the sacrament of Confirmation. Class will be held on Thursday, March 1, 2018 from 7-9pm. Please call Kathie at the Parish Center, 480-661-9843 ex 309 or email her at kstine@stboc.org to register for class or for more information. The sacrament of Confirmation will take place at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 8, 2018

Roman Catholic churches of the Latin Rite use this service to prepare church members to better appreciate the death and resurrection of Christ through self-examination, repentance, prayer, fasting, and self-denial. Ashes from the burned palms of the preceding year's Palm Sunday are blessed. With these ashes, the priest marks a cross on the foreheads of worshipers, saying, "Remember, man, that dust thou art, and unto dust thou shalt return" (Genesis 3:19 KJV). Besides showing sorrow for their sins, those who honor Ash Wednesday add an additional meaning; the need to prepare for a holy death. Remember in Your Prayers Family and Friends who are ill.
