3 June th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 Fr. Brian Bell, Pastor FAITH DIRECT Do you know that June 20, 2016 the first day of summer IS NATIONAL egiving DAY? St. Bernard of Clairvaux can take particular joy in this celebration as the response to our church has been wonderful. To build on this success, I am setting a National egiving Day Challenge. My goal is for St. Bernard of Clairlvaux families to put envelopes on a permanent summer vacation and make the switch to egiving. This is especially important in the summer months when families will be out of town some weekends and St. Bernard of Clairvaux does not receive their envelopes. It s easy for people to forget to catch up once they re back, and our weekly offertory can fluctuate as a result making it harder to predict how much we will have to sustain our year round ministries. The more families who welcome the beginning of summer by taking this National egiving Challenge, the more consistency and predictable our offertory will be month after month and this will help us do even more to spread Christ s love throughout the community. Being part of this challenge is simple: Visit and use our church code. Thank you for your continued support of our parish family with your time and talents as well as treasure! God Bless You, Father Brian T. Bell Faith Formation News Happy Father s Day! Thank you to all of the children and families who participated in Vacation Bible School this past week. Thank you to our Music Director, Kent Campbell, for leading the children in praise and worship every day and at our beautiful liturgy today! Thank you to all the adults, teens and Middle School volunteers for helping to make VBS a fun and safe experience for the younger children.vbs is truly a community building and sharing endeavor. I will be in and out of the Office the next few weeks trying to take a little vacation time. Registration for Elementary Faith Formation for K-5th Grade will begin the week end of August 13th/14th. The schedule for classes and calendar for the year and other information about our program should be on the website by the end of July. 4 June 19, 2016 Peter s Pence Appeal Diocese of Phoenix Next week, our diocese will take up the Peter s Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Join our Holy Father as a witness of charity to those who are suffering. Ministries, for the summer, will meet in the Old Parish Center. The Family: The Sanctuary of Life. The family is the Sanctuary of Life and the basic and vital cell of society. The Holy Family, of course, is unique. One member is God, another is sinless, and the third is a saint. But the great lesson of today is that although God could have come into the world in any way he pleased, he chose to become a member of a family, obedient to his earthly parents, and yet totally devoted to the Heavenly Father s will, as we all must be. He also shared the vulnerability that comes with being a member of a human family. Herod is going to search for the child in order to destroy him. St. Joseph here plays the unbelievable role of protecting God. His readiness to do so speaks to every father about the role of protector, and to our whole society about the need we have for good and faithful fathers. The culture of life depends just as much on fathers making the right choices as on mothers doing so. Strong families are an integral aspect of the Culture of Life. It is precisely the breakdown of family structure that increases the temptation to abort, or to resort to euthanasia or a lack of proper care for the elderly.
