April 29, 2018 The Parishes of Page 1 Fifth Sunday of Easter April 29, 2018 MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia Happy Easter! That is just in case you forgot we were still in the Easter Season, and will be for several more weeks yet until Pentecost on May 20th! The readings at mass will continue to highlight the work of the Early Church community, on how it grew, the challenges it faced and the guidance of the Holy Spirit through all of it. That is why as we approach Pentecost it is very important that each of us pray for a renewed openness to the working of the Holy Spirit in our own personal lives as well as that of the church community here in our area. It is only through the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit that we can ever hope to change the face of the earth. Join me in praying for a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon us. God bless. Congratulations to our 2nd graders who are members of Holy Family Parish and who are making their First Communion this weekend. We pray that the joy you feel at receiving the Eucharist today will be maintained for the years to come in your life. May God give you the grace to long for the Eucharist as much as you have these past few weeks. The important part is not to see receiving the Eucharist as something we do at mass, as much as it is a pledge and source of strength to live out our faith in Jesus each day of our lives. God bless you all. The 2nd graders at St. Augustine will make their First Communion next weekend. We pray for them as well, as they continue to prepare for this sacred time in their lives. This weekend we are praying a blessing over all those who work the earth in celebration of Earth Day and the upcoming Feast of St. Joseph the Worker. Though all professions are important and we pray for all workers everywhere, we are praying in a special way for those who work and bring our attention to various issues because of their connection to the creation which God has entrusted to us. We can never loose sight of the fact that we are caretakers of the wonder of creation in all its forms and not masters of it with no sense of the past and no responsibility for the future. We risk a treacherous future if we are careless with what we have been entrusted with by God. How do we speak of loving the unborn if we do not care for those who are alive? How do we speak of caring for the air if we do not care for the sea? How do we care for animals but not for the impact we have on the area and food which they need to live; and how can we speak of only loving part of creation without loving all of creation? The Catholic Church has a long tradition of maintaining a consistent ethic of life in all its forms. Let us rejoice in every creation of God and ask for wisdom on how to care for it in all its forms. Upcoming High School Dance: All the teens (ages 14-18) are invited to a dance at the gym at Holy Family on May 19th from 7 pm until 11 pm. The doors open at 6:30 pm and there will be refreshments available. The cost is $8.00 at the door and teens from our parishes along with other local catholic parishes, home school groups and the two local Catholic High Schools will be invited. All those ages 14-18 are welcome. Chaperons are needed for the event. The dress is casual, but appropriate for a church event. Proceeds are being donated to charity. Hope to see you there. Upcoming Kick-ball league: All young adults (ages 18-35) are invited to join our newly formed kickball league. Invitations to join are being sent to all vicariate catholic parishes along with the other local Christian denominations. Anyone is welcome to join. Individuals can sign up or you can sign up an entire team made up of 11-15 young adults. Up to 11 players can play in the field at one time and the games are 5 innings long. Because this is a non-competitive league, you do not have to be the best athlete to enjoy the fun and all are encouraged to participate. The opening game will be on July 11th and we will play every Wednesday evening with the last game being on August 15th. To sign up, please contact either parish office or me at frjoe.mallia@gmail.com. Looking forward to the fun. If you are interested in being an umpire for the games you can also contact me as well. Thank you for your help in getting the word out through various forms of social media as all are most welcome to join in the fun. St. Phillip closing mass and dinner: On May 26th, we will be having a closing mass at St. Phillip Neri Church. If you are planning to go to Mass and attending the dinner, we please ask you to inform us by calling Holy Family Church. The dinner after mass will take place at Holy Family and in honor of the tradition of the fine dinners at St. Phillip, we will feature both roast beef and chicken. There is no cost for the meal, but we do need a number of those planning on coming to prepare properly. Please spread the word about the mass and dinner to others who may be interested in coming, especially former members of the parish. Families are also encouraged to create a personal display of pictures of Continued on Page 3

April 29, 2018 MALLIA S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1 family events that were celebrated at St. Phillip so we can truly give thanks for all the blessings that were received through the ministry and community at St. Phillip. I look forward to celebrating this event with you. Upcoming Holy Family Parish Celebration and St. Augustine Festival: Please look for sign up sheets to help volunteer at these upcoming events. We are in need of everyone helping out to make sure that everyone can have fun without being over burdened. Thank you in advance for your help. Masses of Thanksgiving will be offered by soon to be ordained Fr. Mark Livingston. He will be celebrating mass on May 26th at 6:00 pm at St. Augustine and the following Saturday at 4:30 pm at Holy Family. Please join in praying for him as he begins to serve God as a priest. Registration is Open: Please make sure that you register your children for school at St. Augustine or for our faith formation program if you are attending public school. It is important that you make sure that your children are being formed in the faith throughout these very important years of their lives. Also registration is now being taken for Vacation Bible School. Sign up today and share in the fun of learning, playing and growing in faith. Your children will like coming to church more if it is a place that they also associate with fun activities, friends and where they are loved. In a world where we are teaching our children to be afraid of strangers, let us make sure that one of those strangers is not God. Page 3 Upcoming Graduation Mass: On the weekend of May 19th and 20th, we will be asking God's blessings on those who are completing their high school diploma or a college or post graduate degree. These are great accomplishments and they rightly should be acknowledged. I want to urge all families with a graduate to fill out the form in the church paper and to attend the mass at the parish at which you are registered. All are welcome, even if they are not members of either parish or do not have a faith community that they worship with. This is a time for all of us as a community to celebrate the accomplishments of our young people and encourage them to remain faithful to the foundation they have received. Thank you for spreading the word. Have a great week everyone and make sure you mark your calendars with all the special events that are coming up that are listed on the pages of our church paper. There is something for everyone at Holy Family and St. Augustine! God bless you all. Please Join Us for a Mass of Thanksgiving with Fr. Mark Livingston In celebration of Deacon Mark Livingston s ordination to the priesthood on May 19th, he will offer a Mass of Thanksgiving at each of our parishes. Saturday, May 26, 2018, 6:00 p.m. Mass at St. Augustine Saturday, June 2, 2018, 4:30 p.m. Mass at Holy Family A light reception will follow Fr. Mark s Mass of Thanksgiving at each parish.

It pleases Me to grant everything they ask of Me by saying the chaplet. When hardened sinners say it, I will fill their souls with peace, and the hour of their death will be a happy one. Write that when they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the just judge but as the merciful Savior (Diary, 1541). My Prayer Response: Lord Jesus, Help me not only to please You by praying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy but also help me to encourage others to pray it. May many more souls avail themselves of this powerful intercessory prayer, especially in praying for the dying. JESUS, I TRUST IN YOU! Please join us at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, May 20, 2018. If possible, wear your cap and gown. We request that our graduates gather in the parish hall at 8:30 a.m. and from there we will process to church. Graduates may take a part in the Mass by participating in the offertory procession or if you have been trained, by participating in another ministry. Please think about offering your talents in some way. If you would like to attend and participate in the Graduation Mass or have any questions, please contact Lisa Hamel at 586-727-4146. St. Augustine Parish Council Are You Being Called? Are you being called? That is the question I need to ask you, my fellow parishioners regarding our parish council. We are again in need of some new parish council members, and on Pentecost Sunday, May 20th, is the day Father will draw the names for the new members. I have asked this question before and I hate to say, but the response has been, well, underwhelming. I ask myself why this is, and the only reason I can come up with is that we really don't/can't stop from the busy-ness of our everyday lives and sit with God in the quiet of our hearts, and listen to Him. I truly, truly believe, that if we did this, not only would we have a basket full of parish council nominees, but every ministry in our parish would be overflowing with new members filled with joy and enthusiasm! So I'm asking you this, in the next week, you need to go to your quiet place, whether that be this church, your bedroom, or your backyard, and sit in the quiet of your heart, and reflect on this question. As you sit there in the quiet, and you feel something, anything, tugging at your heart, your conscience, I can assure you that it is the work of the Holy Spirit calling you to serve. Parish Council nomination forms will be in the pews beginning next week for 2 weekends. Please consider submitting a form to serve on your parish council. Thank you in advance for taking the time to listen to God's calling. God's peace, love, and mercy, which knows no bounds, be always with you! Chris Shinska Parish Council Chair St. Augustine Altar Sodality Meeting The next meeting of the St. Augustine Altar Sodality will take place on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Refreshment Committee: Pattie Papuga, Kathy Dolan, Dee Franz, and Marie Bielecki All ladies of the parish are welcome to attend St. Augustine Bi-Annual Church Cleaning Any parish member who would like to help clean the Church is invited to come on Friday, May 4th at 10:00 a.m. We are especially in need of some men to help with the more difficult tasks. Please pray for: Ed Marnon (1) Rick Marnon (1) I realize that there was an error in a file used to generate the information needed when I prepared the letters and envelopes for the 2018 Raffle Tickets. As a result, if you turned your tickets in during the festival last year, you may not have received a ticket packet this year. I apologize and want to make it clear that your tickets went into the barrel and the money was deposited in the church festival account. I just did not pull that info into preparing this year s list of names when issuing tickets. If you did not received tickets and are willing to sell some, please contact Sue Ann Wessel at 586-246-4718 or call the office and I will get a set to you. Again, I am sorry for the mistake and any confusion or inconvenience this has caused. Sue Ann Wessel

Page 10 St. Augustine School April 29, 2018 St. Augustine School Strategic Planning St. Augustine Catholic School Like Us on Facebook Speed vs. Accuracy I was subbing for the technology teacher, and the third-grade students were practicing their typing. Students were very pleased and encouraged that they were attaining an accuracy rate above 90%, but failed to mention that they were only typing 20 or so words per minute. This led to the discussion of speed versus accuracy and attention to detail, and which is more important. I believe we have become a society where, in most cases, speed outweighs accuracy. Multitasking has become not only a prerequisite, but also an essential function of most jobs. Yet a recent article in Forbes magazine explained that multitasking is not necessarily a good thing. The amount of time it takes the brain to stop and refocus when jumping among different activities is actually a time waster! I have several friends who are CPAs. During their busiest time of the year, imagine if these accountants did not pay attention to detail, but instead just worried about getting all tax forms submitted on time to the IRS. Missing a deduction could cause the taxpayer to lose out on a potential refund. Missing a zero in taxes owed would cause the individual to pay insufficient taxes and be subject to interest and penalty charges for an incorrect and insufficient payment. When David put his hand in his bag, took out a stone, slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead, (I Samuel 17:50), would Goliath s injury have been as severe if David had hit him on the shoulder or hand? Had the two disciples on the road to Emmaus been more concerned about reaching their destination than listening to Jesus, would their hearts burn[ing] within us while He was talking to us on the road while He was opening the scriptures to us? (Luke 24:32) Next time you read a story to your child, don t rush to get through it. Rather, read each page with heart and discuss the story with the listener. When you have a family dinner, focus on those seated at the table and discuss each person s day or a current event. This makes for a much more pleasant meal than eating as fast as you can so you can race to the TV or computer or cell phone! Remember, God pays attention to detail, for even the hairs of your head are all counted. (Matthew 10:30) Happy Easter! Mrs. Dolly Bertossi St. Augustine Latchkey Program On behalf of the St. Augustine School Strategic Planning team and myself, we would like to extend a sincere thank you to the parents, students, staff and community members that took the time to complete the Archdiocese on-line questionnaire. This questionnaire/survey focused on St. Augustine School, covering the topics of: Mission and Catholic Identity; Leadership; Academic Excellence and Operational Vitality. We received a total of 135 respondents = 47 parent/ guardian of current student; 15 parent/guard of former student; 17 faculty/staff member; 40 students and 16 community members. The survey results will assist me and the strategic planning team in developing the Archdiocese required 5-year strategic plan for the school. Our team has meet on a regular basis and has accomplished multiple trainings, dedicated time to complete the Archdiocese s Unleash the Gospel modules and generated a SWOT Analysis = the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats concerning St. Augustine School. Looking ahead, we are fortunate to have Dr. Karen Selby, Associate Professor of Education from the University of Detroit Mercy, joining our next meeting to give her professional perception and guidance on St. Augustine s survey results. I will keep you apprised as we move forward on this mission. Fr. Joe Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School is in the final stretch for our 2017-2018 Annual Fund. The Annual Fund is the largest and most important fundraising project of the year, involving the entire Cardinal Mooney Catholic Community. Annual Fund donations have an immediate impact on things such as building upgrades and tuition assistance. The Annual Fund does not rely on large donations, but on large participation. Imagine the impact it would have if all of our vicariate parishioners donated $10 to our Annual Fund! We also are fortunate to have a very generous donor who has pledged to match the first $15,000 in donations. That means those $10 donations just turned into $20 donations. You can make your donations by mailing a check to: 660 S. Water St. Marine City, MI 48039 or by calling the school at 810-765-8825. You can also make a gift online at: http://cardinalmooney.org/support/make-gift. As part of our vicariate, we hope you will join us in ensuring both current and future students have access to the educational excellence and rich experience that defines Cardinal Mooney.
