From the Desk of the Pastor, Fr. Shawn Gould Devotion to the Blessed Virgin A strong Marian devotion used to be a mainstay of an ordinary Catholic s life. That is still true for some, but I think it could hardly be contested that devotion to the Blessed Virgin has declined since the Second Vatican Council. The Council itself held up the perennial teaching of the Church that Mary is the pre-eminent and singular member of the Church.... The Catholic Church, taught by the Holy Spirit, honors her with filial affection and piety as a most beloved mother. (Lumen Gentium 53) Despite the Council s teachings, the notion has arisen that devotion to St. Mary is somehow merely optional or even contrary to a relationship with Christ. Whatever may be the perception, devotion to Mary and devotion to Christ are not in any way competitive with each other. If Jesus truly is God the Son, and if Jesus is truly human, then St. Mary truly is the Mother of God. Moreover, she is that only because of her most perfect submission to God s grace. Her close relationship with her Son, both as the receiver of His grace and the instrument of His will, make her a powerful mediator for us. A mediator is not someone who makes two people more distant from each other, but one who brings two people together. It s the preferred way that Jesus uses to bring us to Him. He sent apostles and His other disciples out to prepare the world for Him, even though He could, presumably, have done all of that work Himself. So also, He has empowered His mother to act on our behalf to bring us closer to Him. This month of May is dedicated to her in a special way. It is a season to remember what Jesus has done for her and through her. And it is a time for us to ask for her help and to be taught by her. On Saturday, May 13, the Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, remembering her appearance to three Portugese children, Blessed Francisco and Jacinta (soon to be canonized saints) and Servant of God Lucia Santos. This year is the 100 th anniversary of her apparition. In commemoration of the Virgin s ongoing work to bring the world closer to her divine Son, we will honor her at the 5 p.m. Mass on the 13 th and pray the rosary together after Mass. The message of Our Lady at Fatima in 1917 had basically two elements. First, she clarified that God continues to use her as an instrument of His grace in the world. Second, she urged the faithful to foster their faith by praying the rosary, by being dedicated to her Immaculate Heart, and by making sacrifices in reparation for sin not just their own but that of the world. Her message essentially builds on one of the core convictions of the faith: that those who are baptized into Christ s life share in His priestly office of offering sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins. Our life in Christ is not limited to the forgiveness of our own sins (though that is the essential beginning of it). By His grace we are raised to the dignity of becoming agents of His plan of salvation. Particularly through our participation in the sacrifice of the Mass and through prayer, such as the rosary, our communion in the work of Christ and His saints grows. I encourage us all to renew our dedication to the Lord through His mother and incorporate the rosary into our daily prayer. 2 Fourth Sunday of Easter May 7, 2017

THE CALL OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD The Twenty-third Psalm, today s responsorial psalm, is arguably the best known of all the psalms. The line that reads Even though I walk in the dark valley / I fear no evil; for you are at my side / with your rod and your staff / that give me courage (Psalm 23:4) connects this week s scriptures to the wonderful story of the road to Emmaus, which we heard last week. The Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, is constantly at our side. He calls us each by name, beckoning us into a deeper relationship with him. That call, issued to each of us at the moment of our baptism, carries with it the promise of the Good Shepherd: I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10). James Kinn in celebration of his 60th Anniversary of Ordination to the Priesthood. Please join us for light refreshments in Coleman Hall (church basement) St. Bede Church Ingleside, IL 5

Religious Education Summer Intensive Our summer Religious Education Intensive Program is June 19-30, 2017 from 8:30 AM to Noon. We are currently in need of catechists and other volunteers to make this program another choice for Religious Education families at St. Bede. To register for grade 1, 3 thru 7, please call the RE office at 847-587-2301 or obtain the registration materials from the St. Bede Parish website at www.stbedechurch.com. If you are interested in some of our other programs or are in need of discounts on tuition, please call the RE office for more details. If you have or know of any children with special needs who require help with sacraments or religious education, please call the Religious Education Office. We would like to start a SPRED (Special Religious Education Development) program here at St. Bede to meet the needs in our area but we need trained helpers. Our Bishops have challenged us to make all programs accessible for everyone. We will have more information in upcoming bulletins about this opportunity. SPRED Faith Formation and Inclusion for Children and Adults With Developmental Disabilities or Learning Challenges SPRED is an agency of the Archdiocese of Chicago which has designed a unique program for persons with developmental disabilities to help them to know God and prepare for full participation in the sacramental life of the Church. With the support of the SPRED Agency, a parish welcomes these special people into a small faith community where they form friendships with people from the parish and journey with them in faith. Each SPRED community focuses on a particular age grouping in order to respect the chronological age and life experiences of their friends. They fall into the following categories: 6-10 year old children; 11-16 year old teens; 17-21 year old young people; and adults 22 years and older. A parish is a part of an area effort to assure that these friends can participate in SPRED from childhood through adulthood. A series of informational meetings will be offered to begin the work of finding a SPRED chairperson and building a SPRED community to welcome persons with special needs. If you have a family member, or know of anyone with a family member with developmental disabilities of any age, please call to place them on a waiting list. If you are a person who may be interested in becoming a member of our SPRED community and partner for one of our SPRED friends, come and learn more Contact: Mark Buckley at 847-587-2301 mbuckley@stbedechurch.com Further questions, contact: Julia Hess at 773-539-3634 julia.spredcrw@sbcglobal.net or visit the SPRED website: www.spred.org or www.queenofangelsspred.org In his own body he brought your sins to the cross, so that all of us, dead to sin, could live in accord with God s will. By his wounds you were healed. At one time you were straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd, the guardian of your souls. 1 Peter 2: 24, 25 10 Fourth Sunday of Easter May 7, 2017

FINDING HOPE/HEALING HEARTS 10 Week Grief Support Group: Think of your grief as a wilderness a vast, inhospitable forest. You must journey through this wilderness. To find your way out, you must become acquainted with its terrain and learn to follow the sometimes hard-to-find trail that leads to healing. In the wilderness of your grief, the touchstones are your trail markers. They are the signs that let you know you are on the right path. When you learn to identify and rely on the touchstones, you will find your way to hope and healing. Writing can be a very effective form of mourning, or expressing your grief outside yourself. And it is through mourning that you heal in grief. The Understanding Your Grief Journal is a companion workbook and is designed to help mourners explore the many facets of their unique grief through journaling. Specific questions are offered and writing space is provided for the many questions raised. This weekly group will meet at St. Mary of the Annunciation for 10 consecutive Thursdays: May 18 - July 20, 2017 7:00-8:30 PM There is a $40.00 registration fee which covers the cost of the two books and materials. To register, contact Diane Mulroe in the St. Mary parish office. The group size is limited so register now!dmulroe@stmota.org or call 847-223-0010. A Family Perspective Fourth Sunday of Easter In today s gospel Jesus tell us, HE IS THE WAY and warns anyone who offers another way to happiness is a thief and a bandit. Strong words! Don t listen to the sales pitch of society for happiness. Look to yourself where God is present and calls you by name and leads you to abundant life. by Bud Ozar TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The fact that many monastic churches do not have a prominent tabernacle shapes the patterns of liturgical prayer. Monastic communities often protect the ancient value of receiving from the same sacrifice, meaning that the communicants are assured that what they eat and drink in the Holy Mysteries actually comes from the same celebration. It surprises many to learn that the Church does not foresee, nor does it provide for, Communion of the faithful from the reserved Sacrament. Liturgical laws have long defended your right to receive from the same sacrifice, the same Mass, that you attend. At one time, of course, the bread for the Eucharist was the ordinary bread of the day, except unleavened, probably prepared at home. It was broken and distributed to the faithful. Early on the loaf itself was referred to as the hostia in Latin, meaning the sacrifice, the same word for the sacrificial animal in Jewish worship, and for Jesus as the Lamb of God. By giving his life on the cross, Jesus became the hostia for us. To this day in the Greek Church, one of the tasks of the priest s wife is to bake the bread for the Divine Liturgy, sometimes in a bakery oven dedicated to that purpose and called a Bethlehem. Today s familiar individual hosts first appeared in the eleventh century at about the time when tabernacles were coming into use. The turn away from bready bread allowed the hosts to be reserved since they did not spoil like regular bread, and made the annual Easter duty counts easier. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S.
