BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO THE CHURCH JULY 4, 2016 Spirit of Christ Council 12979 From the Grand Knight Building the Domestic Church while Strengthening Our Parish Supreme Knight Carl Anderson recently announced that, through the Order s wide-reaching new Domestic Church initiative, Knights and their families will have greater opportunities to participate in a variety of activities that promote the New Evangelization, strengthen our parishes, and grow the Order. Building the Domestic Church Knights of Columbus has always been an organization dedicated to the well-being and support of Catholic family life. The family is the first and primary place where we experience and are formed in our Catholic faith. By building upon our current programs and activities, the Knights of Columbus continues to promote the family as a domestic church where husbands and wives, parent and children, grow in their knowledge and practice of the Catholic Faith. In order to perform its important mission of evangelization, each family needs to find support in the sacramental life of the parish. Strengthening our Parishes Knights of Columbus councils have always responded to the most urgent needs of the Church, particularly through charitable and social outreach. In order to support the evangelization of family life today, our councils must be even more fully integrated into our parishes. As the world s largest Catholic fraternal and family organization, we have a responsibility to dedicate our time, talent and resources to ensuring that our parishes our beacons of the new evangelization. These powerful and important statements from Supreme Knight Carl Anderson will be used to guide the Council s activities and programs this next fraternal year and beyond. Family and Parish are the two most important institutions that must be actively supported and made to thrive. These institutions and prayer are the best defenses that can protect us during these turbulent times. Fraternal Year 2015-16 was a tremendously successful year for Council 12979 and the credit belongs to everyone associated with the council including wives, children, relatives, employers, financial supporters, Spirit of Christ staff, Fr David, Fr. Jacob, the Deacons, Spirit of Christ parishioners, those that prayed for us, etc, I am humbled that I was your Grand Knight last year and will do my best to meet your expectations this coming year. Installation of 2016-17 Officers Your officers for 2016-17 will be installed at the July Business Meeting July 14 at 7:30 pm. Please come out and support our Knights who have stepped up to lead the council. All are welcome. This is one of the few K of C ceremonials that is open to everyone. Unfortunately, after the installation only those who are current card carrying Knights of Columbus members can remain for the meeting. All are always welcome to join the Knights at 7:00 in the chapel to pray the rosary.

Whereas, The men and women who serve our countries flag in both foreign and domestic locations do so with our sincere gratitude they are often unable to attend mass and receive the sacraments due to a shortage of Catholic Chaplains in our military Services; and Whereas, the Archdiocese for the Military Services receives no funding from the government and has no parishes to take up weekly collections to support itself and put men willing to serve in our military as chaplains through seminary; and Whereas, the Archdiocese for the Military Services depends entirely on private giving to sustain the mission of evangelization and faith formation for the men and women who protect us; and Whereas, Catholics make up 25% of our military yet Catholic priests account for only 8% of the military chaplain corps; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the members of Council 12979 and their families affirm our steadfast support for, and express our profound gratitude to our servicemen and servicewomen who, each day, place their lives at risk in order to liberate those who live under oppressive regimes and who protect and defend the liberties of all of us we donate $1400 to the Archdiocese for the Military Services for Seminarian tuition. -FOCUS: Cari Devlin requesting support for financing a mission to Honduras. Brother Knights, It is an honor to be elected by you as your Deputy Grand Knight knowing that you have trust in me to do the job. For those of you who have not made it to recent meetings or those who do not know me, let me fill you in. Fifteen years ago, I joined the Knights at Spirit of Christ s first meeting. One month later, I was elected Deputy Grand Knight where I served for two years, and subsequently served as Grand Knight for two years. I then was appointed District Deputy where I served for three more years. After a year off from that position, I was asked to be the State Membership Coordinator under our State Deputy, Foster Sauter, for two years. During those years I was also serving as a Trustee of our council for a total of six years. I presently lead our peach sales, fish frys, and most of our large food events. Over the last fifteen years, I have enjoyed many joyous occasions while serving our council, our church and our community at many different levels. I have grown to be a better husband and father, a better Catholic, and a have developed a much deeper faith life. I have truly enjoyed watching my children and family grow in our understanding of faith and stewardship as we serve others in the Knights of Columbus. I would like to thank all those who have served in the many positions of our council. The time and talent you have shared with all of us is greatly appreciated and has been invaluable. The past few years our council has had a difficult time keeping officers at the top of our leadership chain. As a council, we do many great things and have been recognized many times for our accomplishments. I know the many men, women and children in this organization have hearts of gold and will help anyone when needed. Thanks to my time of service for the State Council, I now see what we are missing. The top offices in our council have become too large to manage, especially with our exceptional growth experienced these past fifteen years. I believe we need to implement the proper structure of numerous committees taking on numerous roles within our council. It is my hope during the next year as your Program Director to get committees in the areas of Council, Church, Family, Youth, Community, Pro-Life, Communications, and Membership up and running. Each committee should have three-five members and be given the resources and support to lead the council accordingly. This is where we need your help. If we do this, our council will grow closer together in Charity, Unity, and Fraternity and we all will feel a bigger ownership in what this council accomplishes. I encourage all of you to come to this month s business meeting as we will begin this process immediately. I see nothing but continued success in our future. Vivat Jesus, David Dudden
