9:00 PM The JCC of LBI is proud to support this exhibit as part of our Outreach Program. In honor of the 10th anniversary of Jewish Service for the Developmentally Disabled's Wae (Wellness, Arts and Enrichment) Center in West Orange, NJ, ten life sized chairs have been commissioned from professional artists, each of whom has worked with the Center's member artists to create a chair as an art/sculpture object. The chairs represent a commitment/belief that every person is entitled to a "seat at the table"- in our community and our family lives. The goal of the project is to shift perceptions about people with developmental disabilities and broaden the public's awareness of policies about inclusion. Wed. 7/8 July Bazaar 8 AM - 3 PM NO MAH JONGG Thurs. 7/9 Zumba 9:00 AM JCC of LBI members are invited to attend a Private Reception of the exhibit on Thursday evening July 9 from 5-7 pm. A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI PARSHA BALAK The last time an animal spoke in the Torah was all the way back in the Book Genesis when the snake convinced Eve that eating a certain piece of fruit would be a good thing. It wasn't. In this week's Torah portion, Balak, the animal kingdom becomes verbal again when a she-donkey provides a slightly different message. The story is simple. The prophet Balaam has been hired by King Balak to curse the Israelites and he is traveling to perform the evil task. On the way, his donkey sees a sword-bearing angel blocking their path. Interestingly, though Balaam is a prophet, he does not see the angel. When the donkey stops and refuses to be coaxed forward, Balaam becomes enraged and hits her. It is at this point that the donkey feels compelled (or is compelled by God) to speak up. She inquires of him, why he would strike her 3 times if she has always been a faithful servant. Rather than marvel at the fact that the animal is talking to him, Balaam angrily responds that he was furious because he felt she was "mocking" him. She replies with a question of her own. "In all the years that you have ridden me, have I ever done such a thing?" He answers, "No", and it is as this point that he actually sees the angel. The angel first asks Balaam why he would hit his donkey and then proceeds to tell him that the angel is there to object to Balaam's project to curse the Israelites. There is a wonderful irony here. By putting words in a donkey's mouth, the Torah appears to be telling us what God thinks of people who try to predict the future. On the other hand, perhaps the Text is saying that anybody can be a prophet, even a donkey. As I am wont to do, I see humor in the story; however, I think it contains another very important message. Before we strike out at another for something he or she does, perhaps we need to take MIMI BLOOM In honor of the JCC Sisterhood JACKIE PRINTZ & BOB FINKEL In honor of early birthday of Louise Printz In memory of Nat Printz. Safe return of Rebecca Finkel Saturday morning July 4, 2015 9:30 AM Torah Reading Balak (Numbers 22:2-25:9) Here is the portion PARSHAH Haftorah: Micah 5:6-6:8 Here is the Haftorah HAFTORAH DROP IN HAVDALLAH 9:00 PM Please help us create a special atmosphere by not using electronic devices (phones, cameras, games etc) in or around the synagogue on Shabbat and Holidays.

the time to try to understand what that person is doing and why he is doing it. The donkey's actions are infuriating to Balaam until he "opens his eyes" and realizes that she actually has a very good reason for her quirky behavior. In fact, the donkey is protecting him. Balaam's failure to fully consider to her actions, leads him to react inappropriately. ONEG SHABBATS and KIDDISHES Torah wants us to be understanding and compassionate toward those with whom we come in contact even if the things they do annoy us. Before we rebuke, chastise, or attack, we must, even when we are distracted by the task at hand, carefully consider the reasons for the behavior of those around us. Being thoughtful, considerate, empathic, and loving, is a pathway to holiness but it is also a way to make this world a better place. Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay KOL HAKAVOD CAMPAIGN Please consider being a part of this campaign to supplement the clergy needs of our congregation.
