The Benedicitine Fathers of Saint Vincent Archabbey, Latrobe, PA will be with us this year asking for our prayers and alms for their missions in Brazil and Taiwan and for many foreign Seminarians who study at St. Vincent and return to ministry in their home countries. Please be generous and help them reach out to those they serve. This way you can become part of this mission of mercy and salvation. PLEASE NOTE Votive Candles There have been a few people who are bringing Votive Candles from home and placing them in the candle stands in the church. We cannot permit that practice as they are made of glass and as a result could cause the outside glass to crack or break. Please do not put any candles in the candle stand unless they are from St. John s. Promise To Protect If you have any suspicion about the sexual abuse or any type of abuse of minor child by anyone please contact PA Childline at 1-800-932-0313. If the alleged abuser is functioning in a parish, school or diocesan position as clergy, religious, paid staff or volunteer you are also asked to contact the Bishop s Delegate for Matters of Sexual Misconduct after you have called the Childline. The Bishop s Delegate may be reached at 724-837-0901, Ext. 1221. All Souls Solemn Evening Prayer We will gather as a parish family to pray for our deceased loved ones on Thursday, November 9 at 7:00 PM with the celebration of Solemn Evening Prayer. It is a prayerful opportunity for us to pray for all those members of our families who are deceased as well as our friends and the names of all those written in the Book of Remembrance. At the Evening Prayer the names of all those buried from Saint John s since last November will be read aloud and a candle will be placed at the altar in their memory. Please take time to come and join us. Blessing of the Presider s Chair On Sunday, November 12, the new Presider s Chair will be blessed during the 10:30 AM Mass. It is donated in memory of Al and Clara Sandorf by the members of their family. It is a beautiful gift to our parish in their names as they were so actively involved in the life of Saint John s for so many years. Al was extremely active in the church renovation and in so many other projects over the years. We thank the family for remembering Al and Clara in such a meaningful way. Kris Kringle Children s Project The Christian Mothers of St. John Church will once again sponsor this very special Christmas project in our Parish. Your response and generous support over the past years has made this project very successful and rewarding. This year we are asking that any member of St. John Parish who would like to submit the names of their children or grandchildren to be included in this endeavor to please contact the Parish Office at 724-437-7569 no later than Friday, November 10. Adult Choir Christmas Eve Cantata The Adult Choir is preparing for the Christmas Eve cantata sung prior to the Midnight Mass. If you are able to lend your voice to the choir for this beautiful event, please attend the choir practices as listed in the Sunday bulletin. If you have questions, call Anette at 724-439-1129. Please give this request consideration.

REFLECTION 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time "For they preach but they do not practice." The scribes and Pharisees may be the ones Jesus was speaking about in today's Gospel, but we must be careful not to dismiss his words when it comes to our own actions. Jesus offered a difficult challenge to those honor-seekers that we must also heed when he said, "The greatest among you must be your servant." This is not the way the world usually works. Generally speaking, the idea of being a servant is considered inferior to being someone who has risen to high levels of leadership or status. But Jesus wants people in positions of authority to selflessly serve those over whom they have influence. And he insists that the leaders who establish laws, rules, and guidelines do not excuse themselves from following their own directives! "Practice what you preach," as the saying goes. Whether or not we have extensive public influence, almost all of us at certain points are in a position to exercise leadership--with our children and families, with classmates, coworkers, neighbors, friends, and sometimes strangers. When these moments arise, we are called to step into this role without being hypocrites. It's important to be sure we don't issue unrealistic demands on others that we ourselves would find it burdensome or even impossible to fulfill. This requires the virtue of humility. Instead of reveling in the authority we may have at any given moment, instead of creating "heavy burdens hard to carry and laying them on people's shoulders," we need to be ready and willing to walk a mile in their shoes, and lead accordingly. And Jesus tells us clearly that this servant leadership will be rewarded, for "whoever humbles himself will be exalted."
