Sisterhood Documents & Links A TORAH MESSAGE FROM RABBI MICHAEL JAY PARSHAT LECH-LECHA The story of Abraham and Sarah is familiar to most of us. God tells Abraham to leave his native land and to depart from his father's house to a land that God would show to Abraham. God then tells the prophet that: "I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you shall be a blessing." Abraham does leave and the rest is, as they say, history. It is a great and moving story. Our patriarch, the father of our people, hears God and begins the process of creating a Jewish nation. We have a tendency to see the story in "mythic" proportions. It is bigger than real life; Abraham is bigger than real life. We have been Aaron is shown with a portrait of his mentor, Rabbi Jacob S. Friedman, z"l TORAH READING: Parshat Lech-Lecha (Genesis 12:1-17:27) HAFTORAH: Isiah 40:27-41:16 Kiddish sponsored by Patty & Jon Lombardi in honor of Aaron's Bar Mitzvah MAZEL TOV to the parents, Patty & Jon Lombardi siblings, Kayla & Zachary grandparents, Joan & Phil Lombardi & William and Eileen Hoernlein. Aaron attends the Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Monmouth County, Marlboro NJ. His interests are hockey, legos, math and track. Please help us create a special atmosphere by not using electronic devices (phones, cameras, games etc) in or around the synagogue on Saturday and Holidays.

trained to see the story as a great biblical epic and to view Abraham as a dutiful prophet who, because of his great faith, seems to robotically goes on his journey. This is a great way to understand it but, in its size and impact, we tend to lose sight of the fact that Abraham and Sarah, as special as they were, were human. They were surely created in God's image, and our tradition recognizes them as prophets. But they were human just the same. By recognizing that Abraham and Sarah were human, and not just Bible action figures, the story takes on a slightly different dynamic. Consider what it must have been like for them to leave their nation, to move from their community, and to depart from the family home. They left family, friends, business associates, colleagues, and their favorite restaurants and coffee shops. They gave up familiarity for the unknown. While the Text tells us of the decision to leave in a few short sentences, in real life it must have taken longer. How did Abraham convince Sarah to leave her mother and father? How could he leave his aging father who had already witnessed the death of another son? The Torah is silent on these issues. When we further analyze the Text and realize that they were asked to leave to go to an unspecified land based upon a promise of a vague blessing and "Greatness", the story becomes even more remarkable. While the theological power of the biblical drama cannot be denied, neither can the human element. There is holiness in seeing the human side of our patriarch and matriarch. When we consider that there must have been fear, trepidation, loss, and anger in their decision to move on, the story becomes real. While God commanded that the journey be taken, ultimately, Abraham and Sarah made a choice to embark on it. And if it was a choice, we can see ourselves in Abraham and Sarah. May we all have the strength and compassion of Abraham and Sarah and make choices that will enable us to take journeys that will help us to grow, to help others to grow, bring us closer to God, and to help create a better world.
