A NOTE FROM FATHER Dear Parishioners, Happy Epiphany! This feast originally commemorated three things: The coming of the wise men from the east, the Baptism of the Lord, and the Wedding Feast at Cana. All three of these moments are revelations of Christ, but we now celebrate them separately. The feast of the Baptism is celebrated the Sunday following Epiphany except where and when Epiphany is transferred to the Sunday following the 6th. This way, we can focus on the coming of the magi. We do not know the actual number, but three are from the number of gifts. We know they were somewhat religious as they studied the text of prophecy and the stars in astrology, but were not Jewish as they did not know about Bethlehem being the birthplace as prophesied. They were accepted into the halls of Herod the Great, and presented royal gifts, so they were men of means. The gifts, unlike what we might commonly hear, were valuable and useful. Gold is money, of course. No matter the form or the origin, it would have been used as currency readily, but it also implies a lasting quality as it does not corrode like silver or copper. Frankincense is incense and was used in prayer to create a state of prayerfulness, smoke to both veil our senses from the Lord and symbolize our prayers rising to the Lord. But it was also a deodorant and even an insect repellent. Myrrh was used in burial rites as a pungent perfume that easily masked the stench of death, and with a antibacterial quality, it helped the body maintain some structure. But it was also used as a bath ointment and could be used as diaper rash ointment. It would be added to wine in small amounts to give a little exotic taste, and in large amounts, it had narcotic effect (which is why it was offered to the Lord on His cross). Today, myrrh is even found in some toothpastes. While a little esoteric, each of these were useful gifts that pointed to a deeper prophecy - that Christ was to be an eternal king and was worthy of praise and worship, but that He would suffer and die. Perhaps the wise men did not fully understand what the birth of the child would mean, but they came from the east to worship Him. Speaking of wise men from the east, welcome to Deacon Ralph Poyo who is with us for our mission this week (Sunday through Wednesday evening, 7 pm, at the Church of St. Peter). I am looking forward to watching the Holy Spirit work! ~ In Christ, Fr. Todd JOHN IRELAND NEWS www.churchofstpeter.org/ji We are a Catholic community welcoming students of all faiths, devoted to Gospel Values, Academic Excellence, and Christian Service.
