3 Dear Parishioners, A NOTE FROM FATHER This weekend we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist (one of three that we celebrate in the Church - Jesus s on December 25th, of course, and Mary s on September 8). We have a vigil Mass in which we hear of the announcement of John s conception, while his father Zachariah, of the priestly division of Abijah, was serving in the temple. The time frame of his service is mid-to late-september. This puts John s birth in late June. In the Annunciation (which we celebrate March 25th), the Blessed Mother is told by the angel Gabriel that Elizabeth is pregnant 6 months (September to March is 6 months) and Mary goes to be with her the last 3 months before John s birth in June! But at the Annunciation, Mary conceived and gave birth to the Lord 9 months later - December! Interesting, right? Sometimes we forget that Tradition of the Church is trustworthy because it wasn t recorded in a way easy to understand. After all, the Evangelists simply could have written that John was born around the Summer Solstice, a day that is fairly immovable and understood across cultures and calendar systems. In the end, it does not matter when these events occurred, but that they did occur. John s birth is the beginning of the announcement of Christ s incarnation! Because of this, this feast is always celebrated, even when it falls on a Sunday as it does this year. Like John, too, we are called to be heralds of Christ, though we are heralds of Christ s return. We tell others that He is going to return, and that we are called to continuing repentance and preparation. Let s ask John the Baptist s intercession this weekend to be bold heralds of Christ. ~ In Christ, Fr. FREE CONCERT: Join the Mankato Area Youth Symphony Orchestra for a free concert featuring video game music o Sunday, June 24 at 3:00 pm in Leas Schwickert Arts Pavilion, Sibley Park, Mankato. Free art activities will take place during the concert for all ages and a musical petting zoo will be offered after the concert. In case of rain go to mayso.net for location changes. 4. School Sisters of Notre Dame Golf and Card Tournament: It s your turn on the tee! You are invited to the 14th Annual School Sisters of Notre Dame Golf Tournament and Card Party at the Daytona Golf Club in Dayton, Minnesota, Tuesday, June 26, Please extend this invitation to family and friends! It will be a four-person, 18-hole, scramble-format tournament. Cost is $400 per foursome or $100 per person (includes golf, carts, range balls, buffet dinner and prizes). Check-in begins at 10 a.m. Not a golfer? Join us for a card tournament where people will play the game 500 at $35 per entry (includes cards, buffet meal and prizes). Check-in begins at noon. All proceeds from these events benefit SSND active ministries and retirement needs. Todd for celebration our Installation Mass on Tuesday, June 12 th, and to Audrey, Joanne and Teresa for planning the ceremony. PETER THRIFT & CONSIGNMENT STORE This summer we will be sending 6 teens from our parish to attend Franciscan LEAD prior to the Steubenville North Conference. LEAD is a fiveday, Christ-centered, sacrament-soaked, prayerfueled immersion in Catholic teachings on leadership, evangelization, and discipleship. I am looking for a few generous people, with a heart for our youth, that would be willing to invest in and financially support this wonderful group of teens. Each of these teens will need to raise $375 for the entire week.
