ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT www.aod.org BOOK & GIFT SHOP Open weekends before & after Masses FROM THE PASTOR S DESK By Fr. Terry Kerner Please see in this week s bulletin the complete schedule of events planned for the weekend of October 20-22 honoring St. Kateri and her canonization. The celebrations also recognize the fifth year of being a new parish blessed with new members and a generous spirit. We can all be grateful for God s blessings and I would hope that you could participate in the weekend later this month. (See page 2 for weekend schedule) The parish will be enjoying a Harvest Dinner on Saturday, October 21st after the 4:00 PM Mass. The catered meal is an old fashion turkey dinner with open bar and multiple desserts. Priced at $ 22 /person the tickets will go on sale beginning this weekend before and after masses in the gathering space and gift shop or at the parish office during the week. Tickets must be purchased in advance and none will be sold at the door. Hopefully you can join your fellow parishioners for an enjoyable dinner. This coming Saturday, October 7th at 1:00 PM we will celebrate our annual St. Francis Pet Blessing at the south portico of the parish center. All pets are invited to bring their masters for a blessing. A message to all the pups and kittens. Please make sure your masters are well-behaved and groomed appropriately! October is the traditional month of the Holy Rosary. The exact origins of the devotion are not quite clear but the traditional understanding of the beginning rests with St. Dominic. According to popular and long standing belief, the Blessed Mother appeared to him in 1206 and encouraged him to seek her prayerful support in combatting the heresies of the day. Down through the centuries the rosary devotion has given solace and comfort to millions as they encounter hardships and sorrows in their lives. I want to remind everyone that St. Kateri parish prays the rosary every Monday evening at 6 PM from the beginning of May to the end of October. Feel free to attend at the shrine of the Blessed Mother behind church. Have a good week and an even better October! PARISH NEWS From the Deacon s Desk Dcn. JPII GIFT AND BOOKSHOP NEWS Barb Cataldo & Pat Urban Page 3 OCTOBER PRAYER REQUESTS Some customers have inquired about solar battery cemetery memorial candles. We have found a supplier for these candles and will be ordering them. Please let us know if you are interested. The cost per candle ($45) is much more than the traditional wax candle but it can be used year after year. The manufacturer advertises that the AA rechargeable battery lasts 1 year with ongoing usage compared with a 7 day burn time for each wax candle. The solar cell works in any colored cylinder container and uses an LED bulb that shines brighter than other bulbs. We will still continue to stock the traditional outdoor wax candles. A LIGHT FOR OTHERS St. Kateri s renovation of the parish hall has given us an opportunity to recognize persons in our lives who have helped light our way through life. The following have contributed one hundred dollars or more toward the cost of new lighting in the hall. We are grateful for those who have been a light in our lives. My goal for 2017 was to lose just 10 pounds only 15 to go. 2. I ate salad for dinner...mostly croutons & tomatoes...really just one big, round crouton covered with tomato sauce and cheese FINE, it was a pizza I ate the whole thing. 3. I just did a week s worth of cardio after walking into a spider web. 4. I don t mean to brag but - I finished my 14 day diet food in 3 hours and 20 minutes. 5. A recent study has found that women who carry a little extra weight live longer than men who mention it. 6. Remember back when we were kids and every time it was below zero outside they closed school? Me neither. 7. Just remember that once you re over the hill you begin to pick up speed.
