My Dear Friends, This weekend marks the beginning of our new parish in Torrington, St. John Paul the Great. We are in the process of combining our finances, so that when you write out a check for the church, it will be made out to St. John Paul the Great Parish and no longer St. Peter s, St. Francis, St. Mary s or Sacred Heart. We have been moving in this direction for quite a while already. We already shared expenses, faith formation and pastoral staff, office staff, maintenance staff and parish buildings. When we clustered, it was understood that even though you might prefer a certain church building to attend Mass, the important thing to remember was that even with four church buildings we still were coming together as one cluster in Torrington. After ten years of being clustered, the Archbishop has asked us to become one new parish, which means that the expenses are no longer cost shared but are now expenses for one new parish, a parish that still has to maintain a number of buildings until we can come up with a solution on what to do with some of these buildings. with that very understanding that we are one new parish. We have been slowly breaking down the walls that separate us and have begun to build bridges to things that unite us. It was very heartwarming to see so many people from St. Peter s and St. Francis attend the final Mass at Sacred Heart and to see so many people from St. Peter s and St. Francis and Sacred Heart attend the final Mass at St. Mary s. It is a testament to the fact that we are all coming together under the but things are not staying the same. Each parish has been suppressed and a new parish has been created. The prayer cards that were given out at each parish have the actual dates that the parish has been in existence. I thank Keith and Lori Phalen for donating the cards for St. Francis, Tim and Susan Cook for donating the cards at St. Peter s and Chris Ryan for donating the cards at Sacred Heart and St. Mary s. This week we will be passing out new parish prayer cards of Pope St. John Paul the Great, established in the Year of Our Lord, 2017. I have been here in Torrington for six years this August 1. I have been the pastor for the last four years. I have come to know that my love for each parish has not died with the change. As your pastor of our new parish St. John Paul the Great, I will continue to pray for each and every one of you and for your families, and I will ask every day for the Lord to help me to be the shepherd that you need in Torrington. I pray that I am able to show you Christ s love even in my brokenness. And please know that you are loved and prayed for every day in my celebration of Mass and in my rosary. God Bless Fr. John Mass Books will open Friday, July 7th for Masses Sanctuary Candles will continue to burn at all four worship sites as long as Christ is present in the Tabernacle. Sanctuary Candle in remembrance of a loved one may be lit for $10/week SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION MONDAYS 5:00-7:00pm ST. PETER SATURDAYS 2:30-3:30pm ST. FRANCIS Also available by appointment.
