From the desk of Father James Be Watchful, be alert! What are we called to watch for? What are we to be alert for? Am I supposed to be looking for something? Is something lost? Or is there something that I am to find that will change my life? I did not know I was lacking or that I needed to be looking in the first place. Or maybe I did know, and I just did not want to look. My brothers and sisters in Christ, we have arrived at a new liturgical year, a year of grace. Through the participation of the sacred mysteries, the sacraments, we are drawn and lead into a deeper unity with God through this faith community as we gather on Sundays. This new year of grace begins as always with the season of Advent. This year, we will have a mere three weeks of time to prepare ourselves for two things. First is the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus Christ, Christmas. But, more importantly, and sadly over looked, is that Advent is a time to take a serious look at our lives and ask, am I ready to meet Jesus, am I prepared for His return and my judgement? We often become so busy during the holiday season that we all too quickly forget that it is first and foremost a HOLY SEASON. These holy days give us the opportunity to recollect ourselves and prepare to greet our Lord, our King, when He returns at His second coming in glory. We also remember and commemorate His first coming into the world. One of the most important ways we can do this is by taking time to make a thorough examination of conscience and schedule time to go to confession. Our own Advent Penance Service this year will take place on the evening of Thursday, December 7 at 7:00 pm in the Church. There will also be later dates for services at other nearby parishes if 12/7 will not work for your schedule. I urge you to not wait, you may reference the other service dates and times in the bulletin. Also, on Friday, December 8 is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. THIS IS A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGA- TION. All Catholics are obligated to attend Mass on this day. Masses will be celebrated here at St. Francis at 8:30 am and 7:00 pm. I pray dear friends that you have a blessed and holy Advent season and may these days of reflection bring us with great joy and anticipation to the Solemnity of the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ. In Christ s Love, Fr. James Please join us as we celebrate this Advent and Christmas season Thursday, December 7 Parish Advent Reconciliation service at 7:00 pm in the church Thursday, December 14 School Christmas Program at 6:30 pm in the gym Saturday, December 23 Vigil Mass for the 4th Sunday of Advent at 5:30 pm Sunday, December 24 4th Sunday of Advent Mass times are 8:00 am and 10:30 am Christmas Eve Masses 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm Christmas Day Mass 12 midnight and 9:30 am Monday, January 1 Mass for the Solemnity of Mary Mother of God at 9:30 am In the Spirit of St. Francis To Jill LaFave for laundering the altar linens for the month of November. To Dennis Freiburg, Arleen Harvey and Dave Cookson who generously stepped in to help with a recent coffee social. In the Spirit of St. Francis...THANK YOU! Catholic Corner What is a jocose lie? A jocose lie is a story made up in order to amuse or instruct others. It becomes sinful if the person telling it does not make it clear in some way that it is not to be taken literally. St. Paul Family Catechism. Next Week: What is a mental reservation? Respect Life The beginning of the liturgical year helps us to relive the expectation of God made flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary, God who makes Himself small, He becomes a child, it speaks to us of the coming of a God who is near, who wanted to experience the life of man, from the very beginning, to save it completely, fully. And so the mystery of the Incarnation of the Lord and the beginning of human life are intimately connected and in harmony with each other within the one saving plan of God, the Lord of life of each and every one of us. The Incarnation reveals to us, with intense light and in an amazing way, that every human life has an incomparable, a most elevated dignity. ~Pope Benedict XVI 11/27/2010 Sunday, December 3 Where All Are Welcomed and Loved With Mercy - Day 994 The greatest nations are defined by how they treat their weakest inhabitants. 6

Happening this Week: Announcements Come and make an Advent Wreath with your family after the 8:00 am and 10:30 am Masses this Sunday, December 3. An Advent Wreath is a sacramental that helps us as families prepare for the coming of Jesus at Christmas. There will be a Knights of Columbus breakfast and blood pressure screening after the morning Masses this Sunday, December 3. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception which is a Holy Day of Obligation is this Friday, December 8. Mass will be at 8:30 am and 7:00 pm. Women of the parish are invited to join us for the 4 th Annual St Francis Women s Advent Brunch on Saturday, December 9 from 9:30 am until 11:30 am in the parish center. Share a delicious brunch, Advent traditions, and the company of other women parishioners. See the Faith Formation page in the bulletin for more information. The Workbooks for Lectors for the church year 2018 are available in the Inner Narthex. Your name is on the workbook. The cost of the book to the parish is $10. We would like to ask you to donate $10 for the book if you can. If you cannot, simply take the workbook. Parish Announcements: Advent is here, and so is the St. Francis Giving Tree. Due to the number of institutions providing gifts to those in need during the Christmas season, we have elected to make gift baskets this year. The gift baskets will hold necessity items such as shampoo, soap, etc. Doing this will allow us to fill a need that is currently not being filled. Please join us in picking up a family's tag from the tree to provide these necessary items to our friends in need! The Knights of Columbus will be holding their annual Feed the Holy Family food drive to benefit the St. Francis food pantry. The four weeks of Advent will each have a different food focus. Check the bulletin for the different categories and join us in donating to feed our brothers and sisters in need! Donations can be dropped in the marked bins in the narthex before or after Masses. How would you like a few hours to yourself to get some items crossed off your Christmas list? The High School Youth Group is hosting a Drop & Shop fundraiser on Saturday, December 9 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Details can be found on the Faith Formation page of the bulletin and website. Next weekend, December 9 & 10 will be the Retirement Fund for Religious Collection. Your donation helps elderly religious with medications, nursing care and more. Envelopes can be found in the narthex and at the church entrances. If you would like to take home the Remembrance Candle for your loved one that was displayed in front of the altar during November, it is available in the outer narthex. Liturgical Ministers and Coffee Social Ministers, the schedules for the next period have been sent out via email. They are also posted on the website, stfrancissherwood.org. For the liturgical ministers schedule click on Liturgical Ministers under the Worship/Liturgy tab. For the coffee social ministers schedule click on Parish Life Ministries under the Parish Ministries tab. If you have not received your schedule please contact the parish office. If you take communion home to a sick person, please receive the host from Father James or Deacon Bill. Do not get a host from a Eucharistic Minister at Mass. The reason for this change in procedures is to ensure that hosts do not end up being disrespected in any way. Father James and Deacon Bill know those who legitimately need to have hosts at home. We are putting together a children s choir for the 5:00 pm Christmas Eve Mass on Sunday, December 24. If you are in elementary school, and would like to be part of the choir for the Christmas Eve Mass, please call the parish office to sign up. We will have one practice before Christmas Eve. The practice will take place on Sunday, December 17 at 9:15 am in the church. Thank you for singing in our choir on Christmas Eve. Children in Elementary and Middle School: We are going to have a Living Nativity Scene during the Gospel at the 5:00 pm Christmas Eve Mass. We need shepherds and angels and a few other parts. There are no speaking parts for this, just a willingness to be part of the Nativity Scene and to walk up to the altar when prompted. We will provide the costumes.
