ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT www.aod.org BOOK & GIFT SHOP Open weekends before & after Masses FROM THE PASTOR S DESK By. Fr. Terry Kerner As members of the Body of Christ we share in the need for prayerful support for the victims of the Sutherland, Texas atrocity. Their families, neighbors and fellow parishioners must all be suffering terribly as they struggle to make sense out of this tragedy. In reality, there is no sense to any of this and we can only trust our faith to yield some meaning. As Catholics in this month of November which remembers the faithful departed of our families and parish, let us embrace our fellow Christians of the First Baptist Church in Texas. Don t be shocked this weekend if you see a Christmas tree in the sanctuary or in the gathering space. The trees represent people s needs and your invitation to help. It may seem early but as many shoppers know, the days ahead present some great opportunities for bargains-so I am told. The gifts this year are intended for three charities: Vista Maria, St. Patrick Senior Center, and Nativity Parish. Another opportunity to help the hungry and undernourished will come the weekend after Thanksgiving with Fr. Victor Kars, CSSR, a Redemptorist priest from St. Louis will be speaking at all Masses explaining the mission and purpose of his ministry: Food for the Poor. May we be open to his message and gracious in our welcome. And next Saturday, of course, is very special for Catholics and the Capuchin Fathers as sixty thousand folks gather at Ford Field for the Beatification of the humble Fr. Solanus Casey. Over one hundred St. Kateri parishioners will be present while many more I am sure will be viewing the ceremony live on television. We will still celebrated the 4:00 PM Mass as we share in the blessings of holiness wrought in our community by the simple and holy man named Solanus. NOVEMBER 18TH FORD FIELD BUS INFORMATION Those who have reserved their spot on the bus: 1 Please park in St. Kateri s back parking lot before departure. 2- The bus will leave for Ford Field at 1:00 PM SHARP! (You don t want to be late.) 3-Those taking the bus, MUST return on the bus.

Page 3 PARISH NEWS JPII GIFT AND BOOK SHOP NEWS By Pat Urban & Barb Cataldo As we honor the men and women who have served our country, we can especially remember two American chaplains who have been declared Servants of God and who are on their way to canonization. Fr. Emil Kapan was a diocesan priest from Kansas who became an Army chaplain in 1944. He served in Burma, India, Japan and Korea. During the Korean War, he remained with the wounded on the battlefield and was captured by the enemy. Fr. Kapaun spent 7 months in prison nursing the sick, administering sacraments, washing clothes and even stealing food for the hungry. In prison he developed a blood clot and pneumonia, was denied mental care and died in 1951. He is a recipient of the Medal of Honor. Fr. Vincent Capodanno became a Maryknoll priest and served as a missionary in Taiwan and Hong Kong. He felt called to become a Navy chaplain and was assigned to a Marine infantry unit during the Vietnam War. Fr. Capodanno lived, ate and slept in the same conditions as the men. He ministered to the men of the battlefield. He continued to do so, even while wounded himself, and died in a spray of machine gun fire in 1967. Fr. Capodanno is also a recipient of the Medal of Honor. Fr. Kapaun s biography is entitled The miracle of Fr. Kapaun. Fr. Capodanno s life story is entitled The Grunt Padre. Both books are available in the gift shop. In addition to our regular weekend hours before and after Mass, the shop will be open on Tuesdays during Advent from 11:30 AM- 6:30 PM. Check out our Christmas card selection. THANK YOU Our family would like to thank all the parishioners of St. Kateri who remembered Kathy Majewski in their prayers over the past many months. Your support offered much compassion to her in her suffering and consolation to all of us in our loss. Thank you, St. Kateri parishioners. Thomas Majewski A KIND WORD OR TWO Dear People of St. Kateri, Hope that you are enjoying the day and that you are smiling a lot. Just be thankful for faith, family and friendships and all of God s Gifts. I just want to thank you for your kindness to me when I visited your church and gift shop recently. To know that people care and that they are showing God s love gave me much joy. This was my first time to your gift shop so I had to ask for directions but a nice lady led me right to the gift shop. Then Barb was very helpful in finding something for my 3rd grade Faith Formation class at St. Sebastian. You have some loving and inspirational items that I will definitely come back when I get a chance. Thank you so much. Barbara Hansen. GUIDE BOOK AND DIRECTORY We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the church. This book will contain everything pertinent to our church: the various ministries, organizations, committees, activities, functions and events plus a complete directory of all members. This book is being provided and direct-mailed to each family at no cost to our church, and it is again being subsidized by local businesses that advertise. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please call our Church Office. Here is a chance to update YOUR record for our annual Guide Book. Please let us know any changes, additions or deletions that may have occurred in YOUR family over the past year. The Church Office number is 336.3227. Thank you for your help. FAITH FORMATION This weekend is the last one of our Faith Formation program until the Thanksgiving holiday. We will next gather together on Saturday, December 2nd for all students from 4 year olds to 8th graders and their parents and grandparents as well. Sacramental Preparation Classes continue this Monday, November 13th and again on Monday, November 27th. RCIA Classes continue on Wednesday, November 15th and again open Wednesday, November 29th. If you or your child will be absent from class for any reason, please call the director or send an email. We appreciate the notification and preventing the continuation or spreading of any illnesses. Please check the bulletin for areas of interest in parish ministry to others. Even one hour of your help is greatly appreciated and needed. I m sure many of us remember hearing our parents say, May hands make light work. Lastly, thank you for all the prayers and good wishes I received for my bout of pneumonia, as well as the extra help received for our program. It s not fun being sick but it is a lot easier knowing you are thought of and prayed for during an illness. Our parish has some awesome Prayer Warriors. Thank you again and God bless you. GIVING TREE TAG MAKERS Ladies and gentlemen, the time is once again upon us to begin the preparations for our parish Giving Tree. Individuals are needed to help create the tags that will grace our church Giving Tree with the wishes and needs of others. If you are interested in lending a hand to the creation of the tags (more a cut stick and type of craft), please call the parish office with your name and phone numbers. We will be meeting on Friday, November 17th from 10 AM to Noon in St. Francis room of the parish hall. All are welcome to join us. ADVENT WREATH LIGHTER NEEDED If you as an individual, couple or family are interested in lighting the candles for our parish Advent wreath, please complete the coupon below and return it in the collection basket at church.
