November 26, 2017 The Parishes of Page 1 November 26, 2017 MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia Today we come to the end of another liturgical year and the Feast of Christ the King. Whenever we get to an end of anything, we look backwards to what happened in the previous twelve months. We do that at graduations from high school or college, at the end of the calendar year in December, even when someone dies, but with the Feast of Christ the King we are actually challenged to look in both directions, to what happened in the last year of our lives spiritually and to look forward to what awaits us all in the kingdom of heaven. I think it is important to think about the past year of grace in our lives and to how we can see God at work in our lives. We can get swept up in the current of daily living, trying to hang on long enough to not drown in all that is going on. The result is that we do not appreciate what is really happening in our lives. What a difference it makes to take time to really see how God has been active in various events, how God was present in getting us through some struggles and God's grace in times of great joy. At no point in time is God not there, yet we fail to see it as we seek only to survive but one more day. Is it any wonder people are so tired? By reflecting on God's goodness, we are encouraged, emboldened and strengthened. Rather than simply be survivors; we are able to better control our destiny rather than be victims of circumstances. It is in the understanding of the working of God in our lives that we allow Christ to be our ruler of each day. Christ is not some distant figure dwelling in heaven and secluded from daily events. Christ is not a king whose power is wielded upon an unexpected throng of people. We are in a relationship with Christ and through this relationship we come to experience God's profound love for us. It is in light of that love that we surrender to Continued on Page 3

November 26, 2017 Page 3 MALLIA S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1 Compelled by the love and teachings of Jesus Christ, Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan (CCSEM) helps children, teens, adults and families who find themselves in a variety of challenging circumstances. CCSEM provides works of merch in all six counties of the Archdiocese of Detroit. God our will because we know that in God's hands alone are we safe and secure. There is no greater source of pure love than that which comes from God and because God is always faithful, we find the ability to entrust ourselves to him. This feast calls to mind that Christ became king upon the cross. He sacrificed himself for us, unlike an earthly ruler who asks us to sacrifice ourselves for them. Unlike an earthly ruler, Christ does not lay burdens upon us, but lifted our burdens onto himself. Filled with compassion and mercy, Christ the King comes humbly to us seeking a deepening of our willingness to allow him to love us even more and more each day. But that can't happen if we do not take the time to understand what he has already done for us. So it is important if we seek to live with him someday in heaven, we are fully aware of how he is with us today. Open your minds and hearts to the power of God's self manifestation of the divine in your lives. You may be surprised at what is revealed to you. God bless you all. I'll be back I will be heading to Malta for a quick trip on Wednesday this week and will be home on the 9th of December. This is part of my annual commitment to the parish in Cospicua. As you know, several years ago, the Archbishop of Malta named me a Canon at that parish. Though these days that is a ceremonial role, there are some responsibilities that come with that role for the parish to maintain the designation of being a Chapter church. The feast of the Immaculate Conception and the days leading up to it are the only time that the canons are all expected to be at the parish and help out and also to pray together as required by the by-laws for the Chapter. This is not a pleasure trip primarily. I will be at mass each morning during the week by 5:15 am for confessions before the mass at 5:45 am. The morning mass on the weekends are an hour later (thanks be to God). One priest has been invited to preach the novena of masses prior to the feast, kind of like a parish mission. There are also evening masses that are followed by Eucharistic exposition, benediction and the singing of the Antiphon for the feast. As the week moves on, the celebrations get larger and more elaborate including the day before the feast both in the morning and evening celebrations. On the day of the feast, the day is filled with morning masses, sung evening prayer by the Canons and then the procession with the statue of the Immaculate Conception through the streets of the city. You can keep up with the events on the Facebook page and website of the parish in Cospicua. I fly out the very next morning and will be here by mass time that Saturday night. I want to thank Fr. John for helping to cover the masses while I am gone, the staff for doing extra work in my absence and to all of you for understanding why I have to be away for the next week. See you when I get back. I will be praying for all of you and our parishes and I ask that you pray for me. Extended collection dates: November 18-19 and November 25-26, 2017

Please prayerfully consider spending some time in front of the Blessed Sacrament. There is also praise and worship offered from 7 8 pm. You can offer this time spent with Jesus for your loved ones health, healing, or journey. Share Your Love: a ministry We are looking for married couples who are willing to mentor engaged couples on their journey toward marriage. It is an opportunity to share what is most important to you, the love you have for one another and God. Our engaged couples need to be able to see what marriage is really like and to know that no marriage is perfect. Giving them a real-life lesson on marriage will prepare them for this Sacrament and what to expect once the wedding day is only a memory. If you are a Catholic couple who has been married sacramentally for at least five years and are willing to share your love with others, please contact Deacon Alan or the Parish office at either St. Augustine or Holy Family. Contact information is in the bulletin. God bless you for the consideration you give to this very important ministry.

Those who have experienced a loss may have a difficult time as grief cannot be suspended. Be prepared to be sad but be careful not to let the sadness overwhelm you. Ask family and friends to help celebrate the memory of your loved one by: Lighting a candle together and sing their favorite song. Create a memory book with pictures and favorite items of your loved one. You and your family can write a letter to your loved one for the holiday and keep it in a special place. Prepare a favorite meal and share favorite memories. Be sure to write these memories down in a special notebook. Give yourself permission to say no to a few holiday events without feeling guilt. Try a new tradition this year with your family. Count your blessings. It is ok to laugh and have fun during the holidays. Give yourself permission to grieve but to also enjoy a holiday gathering. Have patience with all the world, but first of all with yourself Francis De Sales Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School Principal s List ~ All A s Katelyn Fletcher, Benjamin Perry First Honors ~ Minimum of 3 As, with no grade lower than an A or B Alexandra Kerry, Anthony Kerry, Mateusz Moczulski Andrew Schaller, Annaleise Schocker, Grace Thomson Regina High School Honor Roll Noelle Robinson, Freshman No Tickets Required - Open Seating We thank you for monetary donations at the concert to help defray the costs of the choir.
