Page 2 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK By Fr. Terry Kerner October begins in a few days and it will prove to be a busy time around the parish! I would ask that we not ever get too busy that we forget one of this month s more important themes, Respect for Life. This weekend s bulletin contains an insert from the Human Life Alliance, a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to protecting human life from fertilization to natural death. It has distributed publications in 84 countries on all seven continents teaching more than 192 million people. I would hope that you keep the insert, take your time reading it, and share it with family members and friends. Parents and Grandparents can share portions of the material in an age-appropriate way. All the topics dealt with are done in a very sensitive and beautiful manner. Certainly the Sanctity of Life is a topic our Holy Father is stressing during his visit this week. It is also one that we should embrace every month, not just in October. Prayer and study is a responsibility and joy for every Christian. Let yourself enjoy both. (A great place to pray at St. Kateri is in the garden behind the church. It contains a white cross dedicated to the memory of aborted children. Take a moment to remember them!) A few items that will keep October busy is the annual Pet Blessing scheduled for Saturday, October 3rd at 1:00 PM behind the church. All are invited! Also, beginning October 8th, we will be offering a five week series on Thursday evenings entitled: Good Mourning. The series deals with the difficulties and pain with the loss of loved ones and how grief can lead to acceptance and peace of mind and heart. It is open to anyone who has suffered over the years a death in the family or dear friend. Call the parish office (336-3227) for information or just show up the first night in church at 7:00 PM. On Sunday, October 18th at the 11:00 AM we will celebrate the third anniversary of St. Kateri s canonization. All parishioners are invited to join with Native American Catholics from around the Archdiocese for this special liturgy. Fr. Henry Sands will be the celebrant. Following the Mass we will enjoy a reception of Autumn treats hosted by Pastoral Council members. Anyone interested in wishing to help host and greet guests can let the office know. And finally, the first weekend of October, we will have a wonderful announcement to make. No, it s not that your pastor is turning 70. It is something that we can all benefit from and enjoy in the years ahead. Stay tuned. Come to church. Be surprised! Meanwhile, have a good week. LETTER TO FR. KERNER I am happy to announce that on April 28th, Springwells Park obtained the designation of National Historic District. It was a complicated process that took the dedication of a core group of our residents. Hundreds of hours were spent adhering to the strict process to obtain this prestigious title. We officially were listed on the Register as of May 8th, 2015. What comes with this designation is: 1 The knowledge that the historic significance of Springwells Park is nationally recognized. 2-The possibility of grants when available to be used to historically restore, preserve, and enhance our homes. 3 The realization of increased home values that a designation like this implies. The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation s historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service s National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America s historic and archaeological resources. We will be dedicating our new entrance sign at Rotunda and Eastham at 3:00 PM, October 3rd, 2015. Mayor John B. O Reilly, Jr is our special guest. Following the ceremony there will be a picnic in celebration of our great neighborhood and the hard work of those who made this possible. We will gather at Eastham and Rotunda. FAMILY FAITH FORMATION By Grace Lakatos Last Saturday, eleven families gathered after 4 PM Mass for our Faith Formation program. After a delicious meal, volunteer catechists and assistants were introduced to our families. Special acknowledgement was given to Ron Landelius for completing all the necessary classes and activities for his Advanced Catechist Certification. Fr. Kerner presented the certificate from the Archdiocese of Detroit Department of Evangelization, Catechesis and Schools. Students received instructions from the teachers on the Mass readings, Church teachings and their everyday life application. In honor the visit by Pope Francis to the United States, younger students were given Flat Francis to take with them on their daily adventures and encouraging them to focus on his message to all. Sunday found the sun shining brightly on our Five Confirmation candidates, Hannah Nash, Jessica Attard, Will Attard, James DeBiasi, and Steven Kowalewski. Assisted by Father Kerner, Bishop Donald Hanchon bestowed the Sacrament of Confirmation and encouraged them and the entire parish to shine bright with a lively rendition on the ukulele of This Little Light of Mine. Please continue to keep these young people in your prayers as they move forward in their faith journey, infused with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Just as there is always room for more at the Table of the Lord, there is always room for more at our program. Come and see what you are missing! LITURGY NOTES David Passeno The history of Londonderry Air, also known as Danny Boy, and the use of the melody by modern hymns writers. I begin with information from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Danny Boy, is a ballad (a simple song which tells a story) written by English songwriter Frederic Weatherly and set to the Irish tune of the Londonderry Air. It is most closely associated with Irish communities. The text was penned in 1910 and originally set to a different melody. Weatherly modified the lyrics of Danny Boy to fit the rhyme and meter of Londonderry Air. There are various theories as to the true meaning of Danny Boy. Some have interpreted the song to be a message from a parent to a son going off to war or leaving as part of the Irish diaspora. The 1918 version of the sheet music included alternative lyrics with the instructions that When sung by a man, the words in italic should be used. Page 4 The song is popular for funerals, but, as it is not liturgical, its suitability as a funeral song is sometimes contested. A solution to this problem has been the creation of new texts by modern hymn writers. A version used in our parish is titled, Go, Silent Friend. Also, available in our hymnals is a text called O Loving God (#550). Modern writers have also produced verses for weddings set to this ever popular melody. ON THE ROAD AGAIN Parish Notes By Pat Ayland A trip to Turkeyville is planned for Wednesday, December 2 for $71. Transportation, a turkey dinner with all the trimmings, a musical show called Charlie.
